Deb and Raymond have been absolutely amazing. I have a fear reactive dachshund. I found Vigilant K9 on thumbtack and reached out for more information. Deb contacted me immediately. The communication, support, education, and training is absolutely amazing. My dachshund is a different dog and I am way more confident as is he! I recommend Deb and Raymond to anyone who needs professional dog training!

I met Elizabeth Givens at her store and doggie daycare, The Woof Store. After a few visits at the daycare both me and my dog loved Elizabeth and her staff. Elizabeth is very knowledgeable about dog training and behavior. My dog looked forward to going to the day care. After the store and daycare closed, I hired Elizabeth for individual dog training sessions. I never had much success with dog training in the past with other dogs. Her method of dog training is based on positive reinforcement. The philosophy behind the method and process she uses is not only very effective but once you understand it makes a lot of sense and works! My dog and I plan to do further training with Elizabeth in the future.

Kirsten is such a great teacher when it comes to dogs! She was very patient when explaining things to us, and really delved into the history of dogs and their behavior. She's been so helpful in regards to training us too! She went above and beyond for us, and even came last minute when we needed her to, as she's very flexible! We sure are glad we chose Kirsten to help us with our dog training!

I definitely recommend Off Leash K9 Training! My dog had a very high pray drive, ran after everything that moved and would not listen to anything. We had gone to another trainer that taught treat training but this only worked until there was something worth more then the treat. With the help of Off Leash K9 Training my dog no longer runs after anything and listens to every command no problem, off leash and in any situation. I love that I can take her anywhere! Trainers are nice and always helpful. Worth every penny!

I am currently using Etta's pet service three times week for play dates for my dog. They bring her doggy friend over for a 30 min playtime in my backyard. The dogs love it! I have also used their petsitting and dog walking services in the past. That was very helpful and worked out well. Jessica (owner) is tries to be very accommodating with your schedule and needs. I trust Jessica and her assistances. I feel they genuinely care about the animals. I highly recommend this company!

We took 2 of our dogs through training here and they are awesome!! Lisa was very patient with everyone and I feel we learned a lot during the classes. Just a really great experience and her dogs are all amazingly trained. I have never seen such well behaved dogs. I have been through other classes and the dogs must be on leash even with the trainer. Her dogs all are perfect during class!!!

We've just started our training sessions with Georgette, and, I'm VERY happy with her, so far! All dog trainers do things differently / have different philosophies. As I'm learning her philosophy, I have had questions. Even before our first training session, but, after the initial consultation, I had several questions. She answered them all very quickly, without any defensiveness or irritation. She is incredibly open and happy to discuss any concerns. She made it clear that I could call her, and we could discuss it, further. When she came to my house, she talked to me, further, and made sure I felt good about the direction. She even brought me literature to read to help me better understand her methods. She took a lot of time to really listen to my specific needs, concerns, and goals for training, and, even in the first session, demonstrated how we will accomplish those goals. She is more than willing to come to my office, house, church - every environment where my dogs may need a little help. My dogs REALLY like her, and, she truly seems to like them, a lot, too! I am very optimistic for our future training sessions (and, she's super sweet, so, it makes it that much more fun!)

    About

My training method trains dogs that obedience, as well as other desirable behaviors, like not jumping on people, merits them the things they like, like praise, petting, toys and treats. This kind of training develops a dog whose main motivation is built on gaining a reward, instead of avoiding punishment. My aim is to educate dog owners to look at your dog as an individual, and utilize the things she or he likes as an method of rewarding when your dog does something you like. Dogs want a clear leader and long to have a purpose in your family pack. You'll give your dog purpose by showing her or him how to be a mannerly member of the family. The bond will develop between you and your dog through respect, and not through fear, stress or confusion, and it is fun too!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
