I am very impressed and satisfied with Mike's work. He is a professional in all meanings of the word. He was the first person I brought for a quote and even before I gave him the job and had others come in he gave me so much advise on what floor to get and what I needed along with it and what for, super accurate floor amounts. He responded immediately to all my nick pick questions on anything from types of T-mold to metal vs plastic rails to places to shop around, though he did offer to do all of that for me, but I guess I wanted to shop around for a deal. Once hired him he removed carpet and installed laminate floor for all of my bedrooms and closets upstairs and a closet downstairs and gave me an unbeatable rate. At my request he even split the job so he removed the carpet first, and gave me a few days so I could paint myself and then he came back and installed the floor. He was so clean in his job and super fast. He made sure to install the laminate in a way that no similar pieces were near each other, it's like floor art. Him and his whole crew were 100% trustable and I even gave him a key code to enter the property and install the floor when I wasn't home since I haven't moved in yet. That's awesome. He was always very punctual and even finished ahead of schedule. There were no surprises or up sells and he took the time to explain and point out any findings like humidity, mold etc... He also fixed up baseboard on my kitchen and a T-mold from existing laminate and other miscellaneous stuff. He even hooked me up with some free material for the small stuff. I was so grateful that he took the time for that. This is my first review and experience with Thumbtack, and so far I got nothing but praise for Thumbtack and Ashton Flooring. I definitely recommend him to anyone installing floors and will certainly give him a call once I decide to do my staircase in the near future and rid of the last trace of carpet in my house. All in all, not only did Mike and his crew do a spectacular job, but I feel like I learned enough to venture to do it myself which is cool, but then again that's probably because he makes it seem so easy like those pro chefs on cooking shows. Hope this review helps others. Cheers,

DWW provided excellent service! My house needed some major work and DWW Constructions took care of everything. -Taking out carpets - laying stained concrete floors - Building a retaining wall, including pulling all needed permits - Removing all rocks around the house - creating an entire new irrigation system for the property (including leading the hoses underneath the driveway) - creating a dog run with draining pipe and odor reducing mineral bed - redoing , planting the front yard, including putting new rocks around the property - Removing a 4 foot diameter tree trunk/stomp including digging up the entire root system -Drywalling - rewiring electrical systems -probably more. They offered a one stop shop experience. Knowledgeable, collaborating with other companies as needed, planning, communicating, pulling permits, and organizing everything. No stress for me, Dennis managed it all. Great experience! Prices were absolutely fair, the quality of work is excellent, the crew is knowledgeable, on time, absolutely trustworthy and friendly, and everything was done extremely quick. They left everything cleaned up and super neat. I'd hire them any time again! Thank you!

Johnny is the Best, a most patient soul he guided my wife and I thru the entire process. We would hit an obstacle he made sure we got over it, when our first choice in tiles was not available, he met my wife and they went shopping for tile, their choices where great and within budget. When we choose a showerhead and fixture that was way over budget, he said it was very beautiful but its design and weight would damage the glass tile it was to be mounted on in a few years. Again my wife and Johnny went shopping and found a great shower head and handheld wand and back in our budget. Our last obstacle was the shower door, we should have had Johnny shop with us for that too. Johnny picked up what we had bought unpacked and examined it, told us its Frame and rails where of poor design to hold the weight of the 3/8 inch tempered glass. He feared for our safety. I had to agree with him. He repacked it and we returned it and got our money back no questions asked. Johnny found us another shower door and saved us $200. Needless to say it took longer than what we had planned. The finished product is Beautiful and we will be happy with it for many years. Johnny and his men are both Professional and caring. We started this as contactor and vendor we ended as friends. We highly recommend this man in any regard. Bless you Johnny.

I hired Murat and his team to install solid hardwood (more difficult to install than engineered wood but longer-lasting) for the entire second floor-over 1600 sq ft. The first contractor I had hired botched the first room and wasted a LOT of wood because they didn't know what they were doing. But his team came in, fixed the botched room, and from there worked quickly and cleanly to install the rest of the floor. Because the first contractor damaged so much wood, they didn't have enough to finish the stairs. They were very patient and understanding while I waited for another special order of wood to arrive in order to finish the job. Make sure you ask for James. He was the main man on the job and he went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with all work-you should see how gorgeous my stairs are now! He's a true craftsman. Thank you thank you thank you. And Murat, I've already recommended you to two other people because I know you're the best in town. Don't try to go cheap, people. Learn by my mistake. Murat is well worth the investment.

American Design Co. is EXCELLENT. ADCO's quality of work and customer service is above and beyond any other contractors I have ever used. Attention to detail...both structural and cosmetic is AMAZING!!! ADCO renovated Master Bath from old tub and glass shower stall into a wheelchair accessible shower. Demolition of old and construction of new was done in a timely manner. Overall cost savings was so much better than other contactors without sacrificing quality. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND American Design Co. Thank you Dustin and Deanna for making our lives easier!!!

I don't write rave reviews about too many contractors here in the Las Vegas valley, but Elias Trim, Elias and his Jonathan and their entire crew, is the real deal. A jewel in the desert, really. We had to replace our entire laminate floor (living room and family room due to a flood) and we selected Elias Trim to do the work. Not only did he replace the laminate floor expertly and professionally, but we were fortunate enough to be able to re-use the portion of the old laminate that didn't get water damaged, to cover our stairs and upstairs hallway. Elias did custom, specialty trim along BOTH sides of the staircase and the upstairs hallway based upon a photo I liked he had here on Thumbtack from someone else's job. Meticulous craftmanship, when they said they were showing up at my home, THEY DID!! Hard workers aimed to please and very fair priced, kind, and respecttul of my home. Honestly, I wouldn't call anyone else for any other flooring job I might have in the future.

I really needed to update my tired old bathroom. Top Notch gave me floor to ceiling tile and crown molding. We weren’t able to find a small enough vanity for the space that had our desired double sink, so he fixed up the cabinet, added a granite top that is beautiful and bowl sinks with lovely high faucets.

I remodeled my kitchen which included removing a structural shear wall. SHF International walked me through the process of hiring an engineer to do the structural calculations and organized getting the construction permit and hiring all the tradesmen to complete the work. SHF International is the only general contractor I trust, period. They saved me time and money by figuring out the most cost efficient way to implement the remodel I had in mind. All other contractors quoted me 30-50% more for the same job. In fact, SHF International went above and beyond their scope of work. When I received the final engineering drawings, SHF International reviewed them for me to make sure they were correct and actually caught several mistakes the engineer made! Typically contracts love with the drawings have mistakes, because then they can charge you extra for changing the design (change order). If I didn't have SHF International he project would have been a complete disaster. In addition, the owner and all of the employees and subcontractors of SHF International all have former experience working for the biggest general contractors in Las Vegas (Marnell Corrao, Perini, Pena, etc.) which built many of the Resorts and Casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. No other residential contractor has that type of quality staff and depth of experience. These guys are for real! In my opinion, if I was doing a home remodel or building from the ground up, I would ONLY use SHF International, or I wouldn't do it at all. With anyone else you will risk pay too much, the project will get botched, or you will get scammed.

James did a great job after I had been ripped off and failed by other contractors who did not know what they were doing. The tile job was very difficult and unique. The floor and shower looks amazing. He also helped with many other issues I had around the house. James was always on time and worked very hard to get the job done, even showing up on weekends. Do not hesitate to call him.

After purchasing a home that needed new flooring throughout I got to work researching flooring companies. Johnny arrived at my house on time and prepared to walk the house and discuss my options and pricing. Johnny was warm and friendly yet very much about business, a perfect balance. I knew what I wanted by way of my flooring and Johnny added an aesthetic idea that blew me away and actually sold me on his company. The work was meticulously done and in the exact time frame he gave. Johnny was not the least expensive of the six contractors I interviewed nor was he the most expensive. The price was right for me and the work was great. The thing that impressed me more than the completed job is the helpfulness and integrity of the owner, John Levecci. He helped me secure an interior painter when the one I chose, all of the sudden, couldn't meet my time frame. He then looked out for me, with other contractors and my property during the job, while I was at work. I would definitely recommend Creative Solutions to other people and will use them in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
