Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

The guys did a great job moving my furniture and made an additional stop on the way. Very friendly, professional and fast to respond. It took the stress out of moving. Would have given 5 stars if furniture assembly was included.

the movers were incredibly helpful and friendly, they helped me move boxes from a storage unit to my new apartment and actually stayed to unpack and move most of the furniture in the house too which I am very grateful for. I highly recommend their friendly services!

Dyno moving were extremely professional, top-notch movers. They were very communicative about arrival time and called me ~45 minutes before they arrived to let me know their exact arrival time. They were very considerate about our moving needs, moving as quickly as possible while taking time to meticulously wrap our valuables. My wife and I were so impressed by how efficiently they wrapped our furniture in blankets/plastic and disassembled/reassembled furniture as required. Despite their lightning speed, nothing was damaged! We liked them so much that we used them again to pick up furniture we bought on Craigslist, and we were equally impressed! We were blown away by Dyno's value - super competitive pricing and excellent service.

This was the most painless move I've had in NYC. Was right on time, in thorough communication every step of the way, careful with the furniture, and did everything in under the estimated time. Highly recommend!

This is my best moving experience I got. Sam and his team are working professional, effectively and no any scratch. I have Three pieces of furniture which are really heavy. They handle them very carefully. I am so happy with my experience with Seka Moving.

They got the job done, but were several hours late to show up. They also ended up doing light damage to my piano after inadvertently ramming it into an open door corner. I would definitely hire them for standard moving, maybe not so much for piano moving. That said their price was very reasonable. I wouldn't hire them to move a piano, but a fine option for reg. moving/furniture.

Barry and his team were professional and communicative. I hired them for two moves, one moving stuff within the city with a truck and one for unloading a truck I had rented, and both went smoothly. Reasonably priced and they even wrapped up furniture so it wouldn't get damaged. Would recommend

My move was a bit complicated the sofabed did not fit through the door, Eyaury of Furniture assembly and movers, to the rescue, he had the tools and knowledge, to both take apart the couch to fit through the door and put it back together. He had a wonderful attitude and was a pleasure to deal with. I would use his services again in a snap.

Had to move a bedroom and half of a living room across Brooklyn. Alex and his guys not only delivered boxes to me before the move so that I could pack, but were also so so helpful with the moving process itself. A great, low flat rate despite the move taking 4 hours with heat and traffic and narrow hallways. They even moved terrible furniture that the last tenant had left in the apartment on to the street. Total professionals and sweet guys, they took away all my anxiety about moving. Would hire again in a heart beat!

We had a really great experience moving with Kadeem. He was super helpful during the entire process and made everything very easy for us. They were very careful with all of our furniture and even stayed longer than they were supposed to. I would definitely call them for future moves and recommend them to other people.

They did a great job with a very difficult delivery. They moved a heavy, bulky, large couch to third floor via narrow doorways and steep stairs. They were careful and competent with navigating a valuable piece of furniture through the maze. Thank you!

Efficient Moving really saved the day when I found out with short notice that I was about to take delivery of a 350lb piece of furniture from the manufacturer who had made no plan for getting it into my house! Ron and his team arrived early and had this very heavy piece unpacked and moved into my living room in no time. Highly recommended.

I hired KPQualityinc to help me move some heavy pieces of furniture within my apartment. The guys were super nice, took good care with my house, and made sure I was happy with where everything was placed. Would def recommend!

Pettina was responsive, easy to schedule with, confirmed the night before and texted when they hit traffic and were going to be a few minutes late, and did my job with ease. I moved a lot of heavy furniture between 4 rooms and two floors and they handled it easily.

I've done a number of in-state and out-of-state moves over the years and this is the first time that movers have showed up on time! Not only was Kadeem professional, friendly, and courteous, but he communicated with us throughout the process in order to give us an accurate quote and ensure that things ran smoothly on moving day. He and his associate hauled all of our furniture and belongings up 2 flights of steep, narrow stairs in the exact amount of time that was estimated. This was the easiest move experience either my husband or I have had. We'll be recommending his company to everyone we know.

They were great at helping me move a heavy piece of furniture up the stairs through a narrow stair case. It was a last minute request and I truly appreciate their quick response. It took less than an hour but worth every penny, they were professional and I appreciate that they wore the mask. Thank you!

He moved a box spring and few other furnitures from my 3rd floor walkup unit to the street for removal. It was done quick despite our very narrow and rather inconvenient stairway. I would definitely use his service again if I have any other heavy lifting work!

Nice guys, but not terribly professional at moving furniture. Asked me if I could leave my apartment and watch their truck since they had trouble finding parking - I definitely didn't feel comfortable leaving two people I didn't meet yet be alone in my apartment. A better solution, and one they agreed to once I said no to the first plan, was to park a block away and then come back once my furniture was downstairs. They also did not come prepared with enough of their own supplies, asking to use my packing tape instead of bringing their own.
