How much does it cost to get a piano tuned?

It costs anywhere from $110-$205 to get your piano tuned. Most customers pay between $140 and $150. Some piano tuners may charge hourly rates. The average hourly rate is $60.

Should you tip piano tuners?

Tipping piano tuners isn’t customary. If you had a great experience with a piano tuner, you can also show your appreciation by leaving a review on Thumbtack.

What happens if you don't tune a piano?

Tunings can help prevent damage and maintain your piano. When you tune your piano, you’re correcting its pitch. So if you go too long without tuning your piano, the pitch will likely drop — which can add tension to your piano’s structure, according to the Piano Technicians Guild.

Is piano tuning hard?

Tuning a piano can be difficult if you haven’t done it before and don’t have the correct tools. For example, you’ll need a piano tuning lever, tips, electronic chromatic tuner and mutes. If you don’t have the tools or experience, you might be better off hiring a professional to tune your piano.

How long does piano tuning take?

Tuning your piano might take a few hours or less. Before your appointment, ask your piano tuner how long the process will take.

Is it worth tuning an old piano?

It may be worth tuning your old piano, especially if it’s highly valued or has sentimental value. Bring your piano to an expert piano tuner. They can assess your instrument and help you determine if it can be restored.

Why do my piano keys squeak?

If your piano keys are squeaking, it may be because something is stuck between the keys. Or, your piano may be dirty. You may be able to fix your keys. If not, hire a professional to take a look at the problem and perform the repairs.

How often should you tune a piano?

Some experts recommend tuning your piano at least two or four times a year, according to the Piano Technicians Guild. You should always see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific piano. And you should schedule additional tunings as needed.

We are two full time professional musicians/Juilliard grads who rely upon our piano to go about our daily lives. The piano being tuned is very much essential to our business, and so after our previous piano tuner moved interstate, we thought we would try this particular piano tuner who evidently has great ratings on thumbtack. While he was friendly and prompt, I would not recommend Calvin. At this point I have given him a month to respond to a request to come back and fix the tuning of the topmost octave, where he left some notes (bizarrely) nearly a half step sharp. This is completely unacceptable for a tuner who chargers top dollar. He has not bothered to respond. The topmost octave is essentially unusable, and this is thoroughly disappointing. Furthermore, I have no problem with people’s faith or beliefs, but do not appreciate Bible verses being left in my home. It feels wrong and unprofessional.

Peter Omalyev of New Haven Piano Services provided the best value I found while searching for a piano tuner. He traveled to Brooklyn, was technically knowledgeable, and we enjoyed a pleasant chat. After he finished his work on my upright, I played through all the registers and he was receptive to my few additional notes. Peter accepted payment on Venmo and I plan to hire New Haven Piano Services in the future.
