I've been out of school for a couple years and needed to prepare again to take GMAT. Couldn't be happier when I found Arbor Tutors. Superb support with excellent tutors. I can't recommend them enough!

When we started preparing for the TACHS and the high school admissions process, we really were directionless about where to apply, what to look for in a school, what the TACHS was all about, or how to even go about preparing for it. Jeremy walked us through the process, worked patiently with our son, directed us to resources to reinforce the material, and gave him the confidence and he needed to be able to walk out of the test feeling like he aced it. Furthermore, Jeremy was professional, easy to work with, and his enthusiasm for helping kids achieve their maximum potential makes the difference between a good tutor and a great tutor.

My son is an honor student whose sights are on college. We took an extended trip out of the country last term that was a once in a lifetime opportunity we couldn’t pass up. All grades re-bounded but the Math grade got hit hard. With VERY little time to raise his now failing grade back to his A, we found Aron. We’re so happy we did! He was EXTREMELY willing to work with my son’s busy extra curricular schedule, and made himself available for extended lessons; as there was so much to go over in a short amount of time. Thanks to Aron, my son was able to recover an A-. That’s pretty remarkable! He’s knowledgeable, flexible, professional, and the best tutor we’ve found to date! We’d highly recommend him! Couldn’t be happier.

One of the best tutors my daughter ever had. She struggled with the sat for a year until we found him. He made lessons around her needs and that helped her do well. She was able to get into the college she wanted.

My 4-year-old daughter has been taking piano lessons with Dillon for several months. He is devoted to making sure that my daughter is engaged in her lessons and learns both technique and theory. Even before working with us, Dillon recommended the right type of keyboard and piano workbook to purchase. He is very patient and dedicates a great amount of effort to instructing our daughter (and two of her 4-year-old friends). He is firm and keeps her focused (but not too firm that he intimidates her). Finally this week, my daughter went to her room and practiced by herself and is now able to play "Old MacDonald". Yay for Dillon!

Mr. Parez was my tutor in high school for about a year to help me prepare for the SAT exam. The tutoring sessions were very convenient because they were done over Skype. Having the tutoring sessions done over Skype cut out time/money that would have been put into travel. Mr. Parez was always accommodating when it came to scheduling my tutoring sessions around my busy schedule. Mr. Parez had me take a preliminary SAT exam to see the areas of the exam I excelled in and which areas I struggled with. He helped me improve significantly in the areas I struggled in through various personalized lessons and homework assignments. Mr. Parez helped me to raise my score significantly. I believe that achieving a higher score on the SAT exam made me a stronger College applicant and helped me to get into 7 out of 7 Colleges that I applied to, including my top choice, of which I am now in attendance. I highly recommend Mr. Parez for any of you tutoring needs.

Student Information: • Current senior in high school. • Received tutoring in Calculus (currently taking AP Calculus BC). Tutor was very thorough. He made sure I had a strong pre-calc/calc foundation established before he moved onto more difficult topics. He continually reinforced previous lessons and connected them to new lessons. He not only taught lessons but also gave problem-solving strategies for problems in past AP tests. In my opinion, Mr. Siegerman is a very experienced and intelligent tutor.

My son was completely lost in his middle school until Meena's patient and effective tutoring methods helped him see the patterns and rules that he needed to understand his school work. My son credits the fact that he is no longer failing solely to Meena's patient teaching. She has encouraged him to realize he can benefit from hard work with her guidance. My son and I highly recommend Meena to any student who needs motivation to excel in school.

I really like working with Bina because she customizes her approach and lesson plans based on my need and my weakness. Bina provides materials and homework prior to each class, which is great because it forces me to study more! I also have a crazy schedule, and Bina has been very kind, accommodating my ever-changing schedule.

My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with the ACT tests coming up we wanted him to reach his full potential. By using the Chelsea International test prep tutoring service, my son has excelled so much. He is now prepped to go to Stanford, and this is after only doing 6 short weeks of tutoring with Dr. Michelle. Her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son to reach the greatest heights. He scored 35/36. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional service of Chelsea International Schooling at Home.

I found Ben through a tutoring company. My son needed a "homework helper" when he was in Middle School after being diagnosed with a learning disability. Ben showed great patience and helped him to stay focus and organized. We liked him so much that when my younger son was in elementary school and had some reading issues we went right back to Ben. Noticing my young son's lisp he incorporated music and auditory things into the mix which totally worked in helping him through this awkward stage. Fast forward to the present and my son with learning disabilities is a Junior at Hamilton College and my young son is at the Dalton School and is doing very well. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Ben. He connects to people, especially young people and he really cares about helping them. It's great we don't need him anymore but sad at the same time.

Sandy is a great tutor. The moment I walked into her working space we felt (my family & I) welcomed by Sandy with a great warm smile. I automatically felt comfortable with her, as she seemed very caring and eager to help. I told her that my son needed a lot of help with reading and she told me not worry and that he will have a great learning experience. She has been very understanding of my son needs. She even reach out to his teacher in school to be on track with his needs. Sandy has also manage to fit his classes at convenient times and is always reachable by phone. I strongly recommend Sandy, she truly care about transforming my son into a confident and fluent reader. I am very happy and can thanks her enough.

Ken Markham has been my children’s tutor for seven years now, in that time he worked with my daughter covering Mathematics, Grammar and preparing her to take both the ACT’s and SAT’s. My daughter had a very positive experience working with Ken and as a result was accepted into all her schools and has just returned to college to start her Junior year. Ken is now working with my son who has just started his Freshmen year in high school. I think it's safe to say that Ken is the smartest person we have ever encountered. It doesn't matter if the subject is Math, Science, English and even Latin he is on top of it, asking questions and learning more, and showing a passion for knowledge that is simply unparalleled, Ken is a naturally gifted teacher and leader and a wonderful tutor.

I cooincidentally met Dr.Luke and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. At the time I was starting my post baccalaureate to go to PA school, after being out of school for four years. As someone who has had many tutors before, I have to say hands down Dr.Luke is the best I've ever had. He is incredibily knowledgeable (I often called him a genius), but besides that he is a natural teacher. As someone who was completely illiterate in chemistry, he found ways to relate the science to me so that I could understand the concepts. Aside from his teaching and knowledge, Dr.Luke had a unique ability to calm my constant anxiety every time I saw him. When I would get frustrated with myself (which was pretty often), Dr.Luke maintained his compassion and reinstalled his confidence in me, which is rare to find in a tutor. He always checked up on me to see how I was doing and truly cared about my progress. Because of Dr.Luke, I was able to do very well in my post bacc and pursue my goals. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
