Mr. Lopez unclogged my very badly clogged bathroom sink which I could no longer use. He actually contacted me to state he would be late which is a big plus as most tradespeople either never show or don't bother to let you know they are running late. He also did an excellent clean-up job. I can now use my sink. Mr. Lopez is also a very nice man.

After enduring several months of frustration, inconveniences, and outright deceptions, it was a welcomed relief to find a thorough, professional and very helpful team of contractors who did everything asked with the attitude that gave my family the restored confidence in home improvement service. My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

It was a pleasure to work with Gama. He arrived when he said he would, charged me what he said and more importantly did a great job putting down floor tiles. I had my fair share of bad experiences with contractors and he was refreshing to work with. I am going to call on him for other work I need done

Brian's restored our broken antique rocking chair to its original condition for less than half of his repair estimate. He also fixed a variety of small (yet annoying) issues in the apartment which other carpenters were unable to fix. Has enthusiam for his work, a wide range of skills and a gentle manner. There's no categorical rating that would be high enough to encapsulate the quality of his work, or the pleasure and ease of working with him.

Frank was early and got right to work on my siding job. He had matched the color perfectly! (no easy task) The job was completed on time, perfectly done and at a reasonable price. He is a skilled craftsman and I was very pleased with his work. I will recommend him to family and friends if they have need of work on their homes. Give him a try if you need anything done in home improvement or repair. My first experience with Spirit Contracting and thumbtack and it was a very satisfactory one. Thank you Frank for a fine job. I would strongly recommend Corniel construction for their services. I hired them for some painting and flooring work and the job was done perfectly. The quality and timeliness was much appreciated. In addition, they also took some time to help me fix some small issues with my bathroom which was even outside the scope of the project. I would love to hire them again and recommend them to my friends.

Rick and his guys did a total gut kitchen reno for me. Kitchen came out amazing and exactly for the price we agreed to in the beginning (which was much cheaper than a lot of the other Montclair contractors). His guys were always on time, curteous and very hard working. Rick was also very easy to work with and I highly recommend!! I’ll definitely use him on other projects in the future.

Tom is one of the best painters I have ever seen. Tom's professionalism and cleanliness is only overshadowed by his courteous demeanor. Based on the scale of the job I was expecting 2 weeks maybe more, Tom finished the job in just under one week. There is little to no doubt that I will be hiring Tom to tackle other projects around my home.

I highly recommend Vivax for any home remodel or work project. Vitaliy has gone above and beyond on a recent home project which included total gut renovations of 2 bathrooms, rebuilding an enclosed screened in porch, painting and drainage/foundation remediation. His workers did a meticulous and great job by paying close attention to the details. His carpenters did a fantastic job rebuilding cabinetry and showed many years of experience and excellent craftsmanship. They were also very professional and reliable. My family and I are very pleased with their work product and are enjoying our 'new' bathrooms and porch. Jamal Davis

January 15, 2018 We recently used LRL Designs for a complete makeover of our home including an additional master bath addition, removing walls between our dining room and living room, removed walls in a staircase that separated our kitchen and dining room and put in railings, redesigned the kitchen which now includes an island. Lani was great to work with! She listened to our vision and had great ideas to enhance it. During the design process she had the right balance of letting us make choices that were important to us and also saved us from ourselves on some thoughts we agreed would have been a mistake. We absolutely love the final product! It is a great combination of beautiful aesthetics and functional comfort! Everyone who has come to our home comments on how great it looks and comfortable it is. The building inspector, who sees many renovations, could not say enough about how beautiful he thought our home was as a result of the design and renovations. Our painter thought we should take pictures and submit them to a few magazines! Lani was the consummate professional throughout the entire process and was an absolute pleasure to work with! I highly recommend LRL Designs if you are considering a remodeling of your home. Joseph Urbanowicz Peekskill, NY

We worked with Angelika to decorate our offices in the financial district in lower Manhattan. We had both a tight timeframe and a tight budget. Angelika had a great vision for the space and quickly keyed in on the aesthetic we were looking for. She prepared the layout, selected furnishings and artwork, and implemented the design. She was responsive to all our requests along the way, reviewing options and following up with vendors. We are very happy with the final product – the space is great to work in and the overall look has the clean lines we were looking for. In addition, the project was completed on time and within budget .Angelika was a pleasure to deal with and made the process very easy for us. We would highly recommend her and would readily use her services again for an office or home design project. CWI

I would like to highly recommend the general contractor who handled my townhouse’s third remodeling and renovation project, Mr. Mario Bissessar, owner and principal of City Line Interiors, Inc. The job project went extremely smoothly and was completed in a highly professional, efficient manner; I am very pleased with both the process and the beautiful results. The project was multi-faceted, complicated -as any remodeling entails- including a lot of details, involving multiple building sectors such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, tiling and paintings, metal work, having to respect landmark rules and blending with the existing structure. The crew led by Mario was very cohesive, punctual, talented, productive, flexible and friendly. His team is fluent in English (with a variety of charming Caribbean accents). Mario is very responsive, an excellent communicator and a great team leader. He was there every day, not only overseeing the work but very much hands-on, with precious skills, including carpentry. Mario also contributed great design ideas and judicious trouble-shooting solutions. Of course, I made several last minute changes or additions, which inflated the original budget but the corresponding charges were well itemized, justified and very reasonable. The payment schedule was without surprises and always well timed. It does not hurt that Mario is also an IT wizard…. All his subcontractors (electricity, plumbing, HVAC and metal work) were fantastic: they delivered diligently on the promised dates. It makes a big difference when subcontractors are well coordinated; they obviously knew and respected each other well, and were happy to work with Mario Bissessar.

Regal completed the renovation of my bathroom. I truly love the layout. It turned out better than expected. The workers were always professional. I got estimates from four different companies and Regal provided the best value. I am so pleased with the outcome that I would not hesitate to refer Regal to my friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
