Jason came out very quickly and fixed the leaking pipe under our sink. There was still some water after he fixed what we thought was the problem. He took the time to repair that part and didn't charge extra labor. He even took a look at the dishwasher. The price was really reasonable and the work was done well. I would definitely use him again.

Ackthba did a great job replacing our toilet seat, which we thought was a very simple task but 2 contractors prior to Ackthba were not able to handle the task. Ackthba is very resourceful and professional and I will definitely call on him in the future.

Hired Walter to check out a clogged toilet drain. Turned out it was a broken main sewer line which he was also able to repair. I liked how he is very systematic in his approach to identify the problem and his philosophy to only fix what is broken. Also explains and communicates well and works with you. Since he can do a lot of very different tasks, I am sure I will hire him in the future and can also recommend him to everybody.

I had hired Robert to unclog one of my property main sewer line. This task was very nasty because the basement got flooded with 3/4 inches of dirty water. Robert came to do this job on Sunday on a very short notice period. His price was very fair and recommended me a great cleaning service for afterward cleaning. Robert I will definitely be working with you in future since we have 10 multifamily properties consisting of 25 units. Thanks for you great customer service and reliability.

Dexter is a great contractor. He is by far the best contractor I had. He was fair in pricing, and very pleasant to work with. I hired Dexter as a contractor to repair electrical problems I was having in and around my house. Dexter provided and displayed the professional knowledge to me and my mother to allow us to make the best possible decisions. Dexter took on and completed projects that previous contractors started and did not finish. He even troubleshooted the entire project and did the necessary work that the previous contractors didn't want to do. This goes to show that he can be counted on to give 110 percent under all circumstances whether he began the project or he is picking up in the middle from which someone did not finish the project. Basically he does things the correct way--he does not "cut-corners." Regardless of the situation, Dexter will do everything possible to make sure that his performance is correct and done right. Dexter is a great electrician. You should definitely hire him as a contractor.

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

Jorge is a life saver! I bought a washer and after installing it we notice the water as leaking from the valve. Unfortunately we had to turn the water off for quite a few hours... Not so great when you have and almost 2 year old at home. I had no choice but hire a plumber. Thanks you Jorge, he was at my house in less the half hour and fixed it in less that 20 minutes. The soldering was quick and it was a great job. I highly recommend him. You get affordable great service in a great time.

Matt was great! I have been waiting on the contractor to repair my roof. Meanwhile needed to tarp it (since hiring the contractor tiles were stripped of the roof -while waiting for them to come) Matt came and tarped the roof even in the pouring rain (I felt terrible) . He even advised me of the roofs condition saying it was it good condition dispite the missing tiles and to let the contractors know I knew the there would be no Plywood repairs needed(they [contractors] were already trying to sell me plywood!). I can sleep tonight knowing no rain will come in while waiting on the contractor (I wish they were as communicative and fast as Matt was.)

I was in a bind with our bathtub faucet not letting me turn off the water so we had to turn off the main water line. David contacted me very quickly after putting out my need for a plumber. He very clearly answered my questions. He wasn’t going to be able to get me in until the next day do to his busy schedule. He very kindly sent me a recommendation for another plumber when I asked him. Shortly after that he said he could work me in if I was home. It worked out well as I couldn’t get ahold of the other plumber. David came, fixed the problem in no time at all, explained to me what had happened and was out the door to his next job. Thank you again for working me in David!!! We have water again!! We’ll share your name and number when someone has a need!!!

Juan (and his assistant) provided exceptional service and detailed work in addressing water damage to our kitchen ceiling and a bedroom window frame. The project encompassed replacing damaged sheetrock, re-taping drywall seams, and painting. During the project, Juan kept us apprised of his progress and repeatedly asked if we have any questions and concerns.

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

Mr Roman has been one of the best contractors I've found on this app! After going through three plumbers he finally diagnosed the problem and completely fixed it so that the sewer ejector system is working and no more flooding problems. He did the work in a day, repaired any holes in the Sheetrock so that it looks brand new and cleaned up after his work. I hired him to solve some other problems that other plumbers had given up on and he tackled the jobs. I will consider him my go to call whenever I need help on my house from now on!

David and his Company have been helping me on various projects for over a year now. I was fortunate to find them through thumbtack. I was in dire need. I had realized a water stain forming in the bathroom ceiling of my shore rental on a Sunday afternoon only two hours before having to head back to Boston and I was scheduled to have house guests in 4 days. Who was I going to find in 2 hours notice on a Sunday afternoon to come help me? Like a miracle David responded within seconds of me posting on thumbtack. I explained the issue and my time constraint and he said, "I'll be right over." As soon as we met in person I knew this was the type of honest professional contractor that I could trust (hard to find! I own two rental properties.. believe me). David assessed the situation and told me not to worry. He would send me a detailed quote of what was needed by later that night and that I could rest assured the work would be done for my guests in time. I was able to trust him with my house keys and everything went smoothly. He left the place in excellent condition and stuck to his word on his quote. Since that instance I actually stopped using another contractor that I often used and starting contacting David. Over the last year he's run to my rescue several times and more recently accomplished yet another successful job for us. David is honest, reliable, thorough, and a pleasure to work with. He goes out of his way all the time. There's no way I could possibly manage renting a property in NJ while living in Boston if I didn't have someone like David to help me out!

I wanted to recreate the feeling of relaxation, calmness and fun that I get when I visit the rivers and beaches of my home country of Trinidad. Don and his team masterfully recreated that feeling with executing the design of my two bathrooms! It is very difficult to find contractors that are not only excellent at what they do but also trust worthy and respect your home. I was able to give them keys to my home, and go to work feeling confident that my home was in safe hands. Thank you to Don and his team for giving me my own little river and beach mini getaways right here in hectic NYC!

I had mold problem behind the wall of the bathroom closet. I received a couple of quotes from other contractors before Rich came and gave me a really reasonable estimate. He was very professional and nice. After he gave me an estimate, which at that point I hadn’t decided to hire him. He spread some intoxicate material into the closet to help contain the mold. When he started the job, he was totally thorough with his work, he took his time and make sure the problem has been taken care of. After taking care of the mold problem, he made sure the new paint matches the original paint on my wall. The work has been done beautifully and efficiently. I am happy with the result. If you need somebody to take care of your mold problem, Rich is your best choice, for the good price, but most importantly his solid work results.

I simply could not be more pleased with my experience with CJ from Waterflow, cannot imagine ever hiring anyone else for projects in my apartment, and am already recommending him to my friends. I received several quotes through Thumbtack for contractors to replace my bathroom vanity and sink. However, I made the decision to hire CJ very early in the process based on his way of communicating. CJ was always highly responsive incredibly polite, and followed up to check in on my plans without ever making me feel that I was being pressured. On the day of the installation, he was a little delayed due to traffic but called precisely at his promised arrival time to let me know. He was also very engaging and easy to communicate with and I learned a lot from observing him. I have been a member of the Co-Op board for my building for many years and also undertook a major renovation in my apartment a few years ago. As a result, I know a thing or two about dealing with contractors. With all things considered, working with CJ has been my most positive contractor experience to date. I had decided to replace the vanity and sink in my bathroom but elected to keep the original faucet, which went well with the decor. In hindsight, this was not the best choice since the existing faucet turned out to be quite corroded once CJ was able to remove it. I am also quite handy and have built and repaired many things in my home myself, but knew that this job was beyond my ability to take on alone. I appreciated the fact that CJ was always receptive to my suggestions. He was very patient in everything that he did and worked delicately and carefully to preserve the existing faucet, taking his time to lubricate all the joints and make sure that al of the mechanisms were working properly.. Unfortunately, a key connector, which was probably already broken and glued together, came apart as he was trying to install it on the new sink. It was clear that we were not going to be able to reuse the old unit after all and CJ drove me to the hardware store to get a replacement. Before we left the store, he made sure that he checked all of the mechanisms for the one that we would purchase and made sure that h=it would be compatible with the new sink and vanity top. Unlike many contractors that I have worked with, CJ actually read the manual for the new faucet to make sure that his approach to the installation was correct. However, he clearly understood all of the mechanisms that he was working with and would take the time to explain things to me as he went along. I learned very quickly to trust his judgment. We ended up having to remove the bathroom door in order to get the new vanity in place, and there were quite a few challenges related to the alignment of the drain and accommodation of the shutoff valves and other existing fixtures with the shelving inside the vanity. All of this made the job take a lot longer than anticipated, but CJ remained incredibly patient and focused on all the finer details necessary to get the job done right. He was also fully prepared to honor his original estimate, which was beyond reasonable. Knowing it was well deserved, I paid CJ almost all of the extra cash that I had on hand and would have gladly paid even more. His attitude throughout the entire process was simply outstanding and his work ethic is exemplary. CJ will be my go-to hire for any other projects that I take on in my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
