George followed through from beginning to end and did what he said he would when he said he would do it. Very, very satisfied with the pruning of barberries, hollies, viburnum and some other tree trimming. Very fairly priced, too. Don't hesitate to call him. George

I called for a tree trimmer and was pleased to find Sam. He communicated with me shortly after I put in my request. Once a time was set he followed through and arrived at my home a few minutes ahead of schedule. I was looking for someone to trim the two dogwood trees in front of my house and remove a large limb that hd fallen on the roof of my garage. Sam gave me a very fair price for the work, and began the job immediately. I had the option for him to haul away the branches or have him put them at the curb. Because of the small size of the branches and the city excellent refuse collection I had him put the branches at the curb. In less than 40 minutes, both trees were trimmed, the limb on the garage was removed and cut up, and all of the limbs were placed at the curb for trash pick up. When I asked Sam to go back and trim a couple of branches that I felt were still sticking out too much he had no problem doing so. He blew away all of the leaves from the sidewalk, lawn, and street and left the front of my house looking much better. I would gladly work with Sam again or recommend him to a friend.

I hired MDM to dig out behind my garage and level my back yard. When Melissa came over to size up the job, she saw some tree stumps that she felt could be removed. Because of the small space the stumps were in other tree companies would not remove them. She put me in touch with a friend of hers (Jeff) who had a small stump grinder. He did a great job in removing the stumps (I highly recommend him also). Once the stumps were out, Melissa and her crew went to work digging and leveling. The entire time everyone was professional and respectful and making sure the job was going as I envisioned. The job took two days to complete which included digging, leveling, stump removal, a french drain, spreading 6 tons of gravel around the garage, and reseeding the lawn. I thought her price was fair especially for the amount of work done. I highly recommend her and wouldn't hesitate to hire her for another job.

Dealing with Michael was easy. His work was very neat. We had Cadles L&L remove and stump grind 3 trees. The area looks way better than before. After using Thumbtack to get quotes from tree services, I had 5 others asking for my business. Cadles L&L had the best value by a large margin - - glad I went with them. Took credit card payment as well, which was also another dealbreaker. The only drawback was that I wasn't home to see the crew at work taking down my huge pine trees!!! Will most likely be using again!!

There was a little issue with the start time but when Adam showed up, he did an excellent job pruning the tree in my backyard. He did everything according to what he explained before hand and his crew cleaned up all the debris. It was quick and professional. I would recommend using his services.

Clark carefully reviewed the tree situation before providing an estimate. He (and his assistant) did a great job raising the canopy on the oak tree in our front yard. Clark called before coming and we are very pleased with the cleanup that was done upon completion of the work. We will not hesitate to use his services in the future.

The recent record-setting winds completely knocked down one of our pine trees and a second was uprooted and threatening to fall on our neighbor's fence. With others facing much worse situations I really didn't expect to get same-day service for our tree situation. Fanto's spared us from incurring additional expense (of replacing our neighbor's fence) and gave us a fair price for their quick, quality and courteous service. I would hire them again and will recommend them to family and friends.

LTD was great. Jim was friendly and nice to work with. He provided some great suggestions for what to do in the yard to make it look nice. The work was completed in a timely manner. They removed weeds from the side of the house and behind the garage where it was overgrown. They trimmed a very tall bush. They put mulch down in several areas. They removed 3 tree stumps in the back yard and put grass seed down after. The yard work and the mulch they put down look great. I'm happy with the quality of the work and would recommend them to anyone.

Jim and his team, two nice young men, did a great job shrinking a messy garden area. They communicate to make sure the new tree and shrubs are planted the way we wanted. They also reseed grass and lay good mulches for our whole yard. They did a nice clean up at the end, too. I'll recommend LDT to anyone who needs landscape or yard work done.

Paul removed trees, trimmed bushes as well cutting our grass. He set up an appointment to give me an estimate and after giving me a very reasonable price began work the same day. Paul not only did an outstanding job but also did it in the time he said it would take. I would definatly use his services again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

    • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
    • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
