Woodchucks flooring refinished hardwood floors in our bedroom, hallway and stairs. Chuck and Michael did an excellent job!! They were on time, polite, extremely helpful and cleaned up. They tore up the old carpet and took it away along with moving the furniture. It was painless for us! I would highly recommend Woodchuck's Flooring.

Tommy is very knowledgeable about home remodeling. I had an older, not very level floor and Tommy was able to make a fantastic tile floor out of it. We were grateful for Tommy's help and will look forward to working with him in the future.

Joshua converted our pine stairs to oak to match the surrounding floor. This was not an easy task with each stair having an ever so slightly different measurement to fit exactly in place. He did a wonderful job and the new stairs look great. He is professional, skilled, patient, and cares about pleasing his clients. We would highly recommend him.

We had an amazing experience with Tony! After having issues with the last two contractors I have hired, I was hesitant to once again try and hire a new project out to an unknown contractor...But luckily Tony restored my faith in honest professional hardworking contractors who take pride in their work and their finished products. I was offered/accepted a job out of state and I hired Tony to refinish my basement, bathroom, install new upstairs railings/spindles and at the last second also had him refinish our hardwood floors so we can put our house on the market and to say we are happy would be an understatement. Tony went above and beyond to accommodate us from day one and he understood or time constraints and the issues of moving out state pose. So much so l, that when a miscommunication (100% my fault) arose, Tony came to my house on a Sunday morning to make sure I was happy. Name a contractor that would work a full Sunday because of a customers own misinterpretation? Well Tony did when he didn't have to just to make things right in my eyes. Tony was also spot on in all of his estimates and didn't suddenly start adding a $4 nail here or a $7 bolt here but rather stayed right on track the whole time! I would, and already have, recommend Tony for any job you may have. My only regret is that we didn't find Tony sooner! PS- I think the only ones that were happier with Tony being in the house doing the work were the dogs!

John helped me with a big rodent infestation, with the removel and clean up. I had him also help me with some construction of remodeling, from sheet rocking, putting hard wood floors down, and painting. Very pleased with the work that he has done for me and would definitely have him do more in the future.

Replaced ancient vent/heater/light in first floor bathroom. Dealt with ancient ductwork, replacing what was needed to make it all work. Previously used them to find and fix a waste pipe leak from the second floor and replace a water damaged section of kitchen flooring. Prices were good and work was high quality.

I had such a great experience working with Classy Cleaners & Painting. They painted my entire house, re-painted my kitchen cabinets and re-finished my hardwood floors. Their work was high quality and done at an extremely fair price. I'm thrilled with their work.

Michael is a true professional. He approaches every new project on an individual basis and takes on jobs both large and small. I have worked with Michael for several years and he has most recently completed the removal of treated wood from an existing deck and installed new Trex Flooring and their Railing System. If you are a craftsman you will appreciate his work. If problems come up during the project, you will be consulted and they will be resolved.

The company was warm and accomodating to our needs. Our floor was destroyed by a leaky radiator. Tim assessed the damages expressing the worst scenario. We were delighted to find hardwood floors under the laminate and the layer of material under the laminate. Tim has extensive hardwood restoration experience And did an incredible job in that regard. He advised us also on what material to use as replacement of the other flooring destroyed by the leak. This also turned out well. Tim and his workers repaired our roof also. We were hit hard by damages in 2015. As I said he was accomodating to our needs in both repair and financial capabilities . Thank you Ruff & Tuff!! Carolyn srygleymoore

I first met with Jan back in March to discuss options for our floors. I manage a multi level storage facility that, when the floors were first installed, definitely did not receive the proper treatment. After years of wear and tear we needed to find a solution and Jan gave us a few different options. After Jan took the time to explain the various options we opted for a VCT coating which is intended for high traffic areas. I have to say the floors came out great. Not only was Jan able to erase nearly all of the damage that had been done to the floors previously the new coating gives them a professional shine. The floor really does look like new. On top of this Jan went above and beyond helping us pick up the office, moving chairs and other items so he could have a maximum impact on the floor. I would use Jan again (and we are...he is maintaining the floors for us) and I also recommend him to anyone.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
