Before I, the student, began working with Jeremy, I was having little to no improvement in consecutive SAT exams. I was having so much trouble trying to figure out the proper way to study, in how I could improve myself and jump into the 1500s which was my goal. However, I was leveling out at about the high 1300s, with a loss on what to do. Kaplan Test Prep did not help much, as they provided often passive learning strategies, and failed to really help the student with effective, real-working strategies. Jeremy Fine knows the ins and the outs of not only the SAT but the ACT as well. His vast knowledge about the exams, combined with his professionalism in them and in colleges globally (college prep as well), made him the perfect tutor that ultimately improved my test score by more than 100 points in the span of 5 weeks! The strategies that he gave me, and the vigor that he gave every motivating speech with, really helped me learn how to tackle every single question. I would recommend Jeremy to anybody who really wants to improve with a passion. Obviously, Jeremy is not a miracle maker, who can automatically increase a score by hundreds without the student doing any work. I worked very hard, and Jeremy takes that very seriously. But coming from a kid who finds standardized testing almost impossible, he really seemed like a magician to me.

Frank Gerace made an excellent editing of my rather complex book entitled “Resonance. My Journey Beyond Ultrasound. It is over five hundred pages and a story of a holocaust survivor, an immigrant and a scientist of ultrasonics. Frank handled the copy editing with ease both the historical and the scientific aspects of this writing. He sometimes changed a phrase or two; in these cases he used the MSWord comment facility to alert me to any edits of grammar or style and in any uncertain situation, he always consulted with me leaving the decision to me, the writer. He double checked place names on Google and even corrected my French and Spanish spelling. His efforts turned my work into a much more readable form. His editing exceeds all my expectation. If there is an award for editing I definitely would nominate Frank for the GRAND PRIX.

I had a great experience with Write for life, David T. I would work with him again on other projects in the near future. As a beginner writer, he listened to my voice, and develop the style to a professional level. Thank you.

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

Rosemary Donahue is a writer’s dream. From the very first conversation, she was supportive and attentive. She took my rather weak pitch and helped me shape it into a much better piece, by opening me up to perceptions and nuances that I might not otherwise have considered. Another plus is that she responds quickly and thoroughly, so that I felt we were really on the same team.

Over a three month period, Mr. Black assisted in winnowing a 600 page commercial novel to a lean 380 pages. He focused the main story, built the pace, and highlighted the main themes and characters. What was most impressive was his ability to shape and pace the story. In short, he took a turkey and deftly carved it which enabled the writer to present a beautiful platter. He is absolutely brilliant. Full value received. It is so easy to get lost in your own MS to have someone like Mr. Black is priceless. He is frank in both praise and criticism and won't waste your time. Living in Los Angeles I was nervous to work with someone from the East Coast but it worked out fine. He is accessible, responsive and worth diamonds.

Tony generated a very professional resume. He formatted it so that it looked great both on the printed page and on screen. Tony spent time on the phone with me gathering the salient points--education, experience, skill sets, honors and awards, publications, etc., then drafted a resume which I was able to review and edit as needed. Happily, Tony did such a great job displaying and emphasizing my credentials that I did not have to change anything! I was invited to participate in both phone screenings and in-person interviews. Tony acted as job coach to prepare me for those events through role playing exercises where he was the interviewer and I was the interviewee. During these sessions, Tony helped me become aware of my phone presence, made suggestions regarding my delivery, and recommended that I stay on topic when answering questions, yet expand to emphasize my expertise in the field, when necessary. I am extremely pleased with Tony's abilities as a resume writer and interview coach. I know that you will find this to be the case as well. Tony's methods resulted in my landing a new job. I have been working there for six months. I know that Tony's efforts and instruction helped me get my position.

The writer was extremely professional, overall the quality of the paper was amazing. Additionally, the writer worked with me to ensure that my paper satisfied me and met my needs. The writer constantly asked me my opinion on the paper before making any durastic changes. Being that I was on a very strict deadline, I was both amazed and surprised that the writer was very diligent in making sure my deadline was met.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
