Mike has worked on a range of projects for us, that include small maintenance jobs and large remodeling work. He's put up walls, done electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, roofing and painting. He's been our go-to fix-it guy for over 10 years and I know that when I call Mike that the job will get done on schedule and that it will be done right.

This was our first experience using Thumbtack and the job required that our newly delivered trundle-day bed (in 3 boxes) be moved up 2 flights of stairs, unpacked, and then assembled. We selected David Carota to do the job, and we are so glad we did. David is reliable, punctual, and a true professional. He reached out to us to confirm the day & time, and asked us if we could send pictures of the final product before he arrived to get an idea of what it would look like. We were extremely impressed with his work ethic. He not only worked quickly but also very carefully & methodically. It took him 2 hours to complete the job, where normally it would take 2 people about 2 hrs to do, according to the directions. His price was also very reasonable. He has expertise in other areas including woodworking, metal work, etc. We were so pleased with his work that we're trying to think of other jobs he can help us with so that we can request him again!! It is rare to find someone who is so well-rounded & such a pleasure to work with. Thank you very much, David!!

Rafal is FANTASTIC, and after our wonderful experience, we highly recommend him for your woodworking and home improvement project needs. We found Rafal via Thumbtack and hired him after meeting with him to discuss a crown molding project in our historic colonial home. Rafal's attention to detail was phenomenal, and we really appreciated his process: he listened to what we wanted to do, made some recommendations for what he thought would work best, and incorporated all of our feedback into the project. The crown molding that Rafal put up in our home came out beautifully, and the project was completed on time and on budget. Also, Rafal took care to sweep / vaccum / tidy work areas after he finished working each day. We liked Rafal's work and work ethic so much, that within a week of finishing our first project, we hired him for two additional projects: replacing the shoe molding throughout our house and converting an existing washroom / laundry / closet to a different configuration with some upgrades. We have been extremely pleased with ALL of the work and the attention to detail that Rafal has. We look forward to hiring him for our kitchen renovation when funds permit!!

Bruno was a pleasure to work with - smart, clear, professional and a genuine craftsman. He created (from scratch), enormous 10' tall bookshelves for our living room and then installed them. The installation was especially tricky as we're in an old house with no straight lines so Bruno had to, literally, measure out each shelf individually so they could be moved about. He stuck to his very reasonable estimate and we're loving our shelves. Picture is shelves going up - pics of them filled with books to come : )

Lou is a pleasure to work with. I have a farm table in my kitchen that was worn and in need of refinishing. After speaking with Lou about the project....he arranged to see it at my house for an estimate. The estimate was fair for the work that needed to be done. He was able to suggest a durable finish. Lou picked up the table from my house. He invited me to see the table after it was sanded at his shop,to decide if I wanted a stain as well. The table was finished in its natural color. The table is like new, and I will have it for many more years. Lou is a true craftsman who loves what he does....

I didn't hire Roman to finish my cabinets (yet) but he did do a considerable amount of interior repair work -- woodwork, painting etc. --and his work was exemplary. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Roman, who is also a very pleasant person to deal with.

We hired Hammers Custom Carpentry to semi-finish our basement using FRP panels - we selected them from 2 other Thumbtack providers based on their experience and reasonable pricing. Installation required great precision to cut & install the panels around many obstacles (like pipes) in the walls. Harvey & Don's work showed craftsmanship, e.g. taking the extra time to trim out around windows and doors properly. They were also very friendly & professional, as they arrived on time every day and worked diligently. It's clear that Harvey wants to build a strong relationship with his customers by going the extra mile and I will absolutely contact them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
