Guljeet is helping my sister in high school with her pre-algebra and algebra coursework. Guljeet recognized that my sister had not mastered the fundamentals as a precursor to algebra. He has met with her 3x/week for the past 2 weeks and has been very flexible. He teaches her more simple approaches to problem-solving and provides additional homework in between sessions. Although math is difficult for my sister, she has expressed that she enjoys meeting with Guljeet and is benefiting from his tutoring. I appreciate Guljeet giving me detailed updates on her progress when I ask.

Charlotte is a miracle-worker! I've always struggled with math (and by struggle, I mean I have some seriously bad math anxiety). I had to take a statistics class for my coursework and I found her halfway through the semester after almost failing my latest exam (again), feeling hopeless and discouraged, and wanted to drop my class altogether. From day 1 she was professional and easy to talk to and made me feel comfortable instantly. She is wonderful in how she approaches tutoring. She's awesome at adapting her teaching style to however you learn best, is super funny and has an awesome personality that makes learning math feel more like you're learning from a friend than from a stranger. After working with Charlotte, my 3rd exam grade was a B-, I scored a 90% on my final exam, and I just got my final grades for the semester today and found out that I PASSED statistics! Honestly, she was the saving grace that got me through stats, and if she can help ME pass stats, she can definitely help anyone that needs it!

Where to begin....utilizing a tutor wasn't on our minds for the standardized tests for college. Fortunately my daughter didnt fall into a category that we felt it would be necessary. However, when she took her first pass at the SAT her junior year in high school, she found timing her responses on this test properly and recalling her math from years prior were holding her back from her potential. From here, my mind opened to the option of considering a tutor. I let my daughter help make the decision as well, as it would be an investment. I have heard countless stories of putting good money after bad, and I didn't want to find myself and my daughters efforts on the short end of that stick.... Then comes Professor Z & Westside Tutoring Services........ Through a little online research, my gut and a personal friend's positive experience (after a few weeks of her high schooler working with Prof Z) we asked him to consider tutoring our daughter. I found him as delightful in person as in his referrals online... Once in awhile in life, you find that person who has a true passion for what they do....& makes sure not only THEY succeed but those people around them do....this is Prof Z. He leaves little to chance. He has created a pretty fool proof way of approaching tutoring that will allow your students true potential to come through in results. It is efficient, focused, and worth every dime. His family is a beacon of kindness and support. I would (and have) told anyone considering tutoring to be extremely careful. Don't waste money on questionable's not something to gamble with. After Prof Z's tutoring for 3-4 months and my daughter's hard work, she achieved her personal goal of a 1560 on her SAT. She even left this second go around of the test happy and cautiously confident. Who does that at these painful 3 hour sittings?! Thank you Prof Z....proving to my college bound daughter that hard work pays off. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us, and to all the lucky community of students who cross your path......

Ms Kelly is amazing, she connects with the person she is tutoring in a friendly level. She loves what she does and my son loves her too. He feels comfortable with her. She explores the likes of her students and the tutoring lessons revolve around the needs and the likes. I absolutely love her and will recommend her to everyone!

Matt tutored our 7th grader in math through a challenging period of Saxon Math algebra. His consistent good nature and excellent tutoring helped our son get through the tough stuff. Math used to be scary for our son, but not anymore. Thanks so much for the great work!

The College Review did a great job adapting to my learning style. I'm pretty visual and learn by practicing problems, so the instructor modified my private lessons to cater to how I learn. It was also cool that I was able to pick any time of day for any amount of times per week to have a tutor lesson. Overall this was definitely worthwhile because my score boosted from a 22-29. I would for sure hire them again if I had to choose.

Mr. Corrice was tutoring my son last year. I am very happy with this. He was always on time and prepared with all materials for lessons and problems in areas that my son struggled with. Right now my son has an A in math class.

I am a Taiwanese student in Cleveland, Ohio. My specialty is teaching Mandarin! I can also teach elementary and middle school math, English-Chinese translation!

I stand out as a guitar teacher because I have a music theory and classical background that helps students better understand what they are playing and opens them up to different ways of playing than just strumming chords. I adjust my lesson plans to each student to suit their interests and abilities. If a student has a question I will go to any lengths to find their answer. I love helping a student get that sound and seeing them accomplish something they thought they couldn't. I love that as a musician you can always get better, and I love growing as a musician myself, because that makes me a better teacher.

As teachers we began our career teaching in the classroom to large groups of students. When I founded this service, I was inspired by the possibility of helping students who needed instruction on an individualized basis -- where they would get the full attention of the teacher. Teachers are unable to teach just to one student when they are teaching for a large school district, college or university. Students who need individual, direct and explicit instruction, can achieve success when they are the only one in the class. I formed my educational business based on this knowledge and the success my students have achieved throughout the years.

I've studied Algebra inside and out for 46 years - have found the most direct and easiest way to solve Algebra problems that makes it very simple and easy to remember without the book - even after 46 years! That's why 38 years ago I won the Best Algebra Tutor award at the University of Akron. Since Algebra is so easy and straight-forward with simple rules to apply and all that's needed is how to manipulate equations to find the value of the desired variable. To me it a lot of fun - like a game. If the student is ready all the basics of Algebra can be learned in several hours and then just practice putting the rules and manipulation strategies to work. It is very logical and objective. You can prove your answer to show that you solved it properly.

I am a qualified teacher from Latin America who teaches Portuguese and Spanish for all levels and ages. With the methodology used, you will really learn how to speak Spanish/Portuguese. It is understandable that students want to understand and make themselves understood in a cultural context. Of course grammar is necessary for this, but you will enjoy the classes while you learn! I have been teaching Spanish and Portuguese for 15 years and have developed a great many resources to make the lessons fun and lively. The classes are highly focused on the development of communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). As a teacher, I have won several quality certifications for the excellent results in the educational field.

I teach English as a second language online. I have many years of experience in teaching overseas and online.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
