Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Emily is an exceptional professional. She has all the tools to train a dog. Oliver Jack is a blind Black Lab. She crated trained him and also provided instruction to us to potty train Oliver Jack. We also boarded our dogs Oliver Jack and Izzy a female Havenese. Both dogs responded well to her care. I would strongly recommend her as a trainer and utilize her boarding business.

Whitney has made a huge difference in my dog! He is on the road to quickly becoming a well trained pup, thanks to Whitney’s patience and knowledge of how to cater training to be individual for every dog’s demeanor and personality. I’m so pleased with the progress we’re making and can’t wait to see the finished product with my dog :)

This was my 2nd experience with a dog trainer after a previous experience that really left a bad taste in my mouth. But from the moment Lisa came into the house and met my dog I was immediately comforted. She was excellent with my German Shepherd and fixed his aggression and obedience issues within a couple sessions. She even brought her own family over to help deal with my dog's territory issues in the house with guests. Her passion for working with dogs is obvious, and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a great trainer!

Lisa is amazing! I have four dogs and though we only worked on my newest addition, she gave me the tools to train the other dogs as needed. Great communication and reasonably priced! She is passionate about her work and it shows. So glad I found her!!

My dog Timber (3 years old) was so annoyingly over hyper we could not have visitors, go for walks or even to the park. His leash walking behavior was poor at best, could not walk off leash without running away, and he was desperate to meet other dogs but couldn't because he would get too excited and overly hyper he would annoy them to the point it would start a fight. After 3 sessions I can walk him off leash, he is calm and controllable, and totally ignores other animals when we are going for walks. My next test for him is the dog park! The price for Terry's services are not cheap BUT when you buy cheap training you get cheap training. Terry provides GOOD QUALITY training with guarantees and after training guidance as needed. I definitely recommend him.

Katie was great in working with our dog and our family members. We've seen great improvement using her training techniques. We follow up with her in a few weeks but I don't think we will be having any of the aggression issues we were seeing, Cooper is responding well to the training.

Katie was very helpful in showing me some simple commands for my dog. By the end of the first training he was manageable during our walk and had learned to take his 'spot' and stay until I called him away. I appreciate the clear direction I was given and will be able to use it for future training. I would highly recommend Katie to anyone who is looking for a consistent trainer!

Josie has been amazing! I have a year old Burmese mountain dog who is just as stubborn as can be. Josie came in and instantly we noticed a shift in our dogs behavior. After one session pulling became obsolete! Beyond a trainer she’s a really sweet person and her schedule is so flexible!

Katie was absolutely wonderful to work with. She was knowledgeable and friendly. She taught us so much about our dog’s body language and behavior; and gave us great strategies to help our dog’s fear aggression. I would absolutely hire her again for any dog training needs. She knows her stuff and has an obvious passion for helping dogs!

Our aggressive dog wasn't able to calm down enough to be trained in our session with Lisa, but she was able to assess the situation in a really comprehensive manner and made excellent recommendations for first-steps to help our doggo live her best life.

Lisa is an outstanding dog trainer. She is consistent in her approach and obviously loves animals. She is working with a young, bull-headed Great Dane male for me and is having very good success. She is firm and persistent, but loving. Positive reinforcement all the way. Very, very, highly recommended.

Katie was awesome. She talked us through what she was doing and why she was doing it the entire time. She was able to read my dog right away and adjust the training style to his personality. It is obvious that she is very experienced and was able to answer my questions and concerns of how to raise my puppy. We are planning to schedule 2 more lessons with her to really give our puppy a boost to a good start.

Terry’s dog training for me and my young pit bull mix has positively changed the family dynamics and energy at home! Cali used to tug on the leash during walks, making it impossible for me to bring my kids with us; she ate the kid’s toys; and generally caused chaos with her excessive energy. Even after one lesson she was a more enjoyable dog. After three lessons we can walk with her off leash without her running (and I can bring the kids on walks too), she doesn’t eat their toys, and now her personality is shining through. And Terry helped us do this with only a few simple commands! Thank you!

Lisa I awesome. She has helped my dog over the course of a month learn to sit, lay down, stay, and we are still working with her to drop things she isn't suppose to have. My lil pup knew nothing haha. Now she is more well behaved and just a better dog over all. We are going to continue to work with her and I anticipate that over the next month she will get everything down perfectly. I would highly recommend Lisa to anyone looking for help training their animals. Plus she comes to you and does not charge an arm and a leg. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My husband and I have an 8 month Victorian Bulldog named Louie and we needed help ... It was impossible to take him for a walk.. constantly distracted, laying down and basically he would not listen. He would chew on just about everything in the house and extremely playful. We heard from Andrew and he came to our house and described his method and recommended for Louie to stay at his house for 5 days where he would receive intense training . Andrew was so good with Louie and extremely knowledgeable . He also had a very loving way with Louie . He sent us videos and txts throughout his stay .When we picked him he seemed better and as long as we followed his methods, Louie was so much better. Andrew also wrote a detailed plan for us to implement and it was simple but the key is to be consistent . Andrew has come to the house to check on Louies progress and was able to answer questions that came up. He was willingly to come more often if needed . We are so happy things are better .We would HIGHLY recommend Andrew if you are going through similar issues as we were experiencing with our adorable dog !! Louie is now able to go on 45 minutes walks with very little distractions and doing much better with chewing household items .... Mike, Jeanne and Louie
