Daisy and The Modern Southern Table worked with me on the catering for a pre-wedding picnic for 85 guests. I needed to have the caterer set up the food into a buffet and then come back to break it down afterwards. Daisy was very responsive to my specific requests (about gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options), and she put together a menu that was varied, interesting, and colorful. Communication throughout the process was very good. She responded very quickly to questions, and was responsive to things that came up. Daisy was also punctual. She was ready with everything when I came to the tasting. On the day of the picnic, she showed up exactly on schedule both for the set-up and break-down. I also had not thought of a few details, such as serving spoons for the chafing dishes. Daisy came prepared with everything we might need to serve the delicious food. had told her I was purchasing my own plates and eating utensils (I wanted palm leaf plates and bamboo utensils in order to compost them); but Daisy came to the picnic with picnic plates and eating utensils just in case I had forgotten. This was a sign that she knows her clients don't throw catered parties often and she is thinking of what they might need or forget. I appreciate this a lot! The best thing is that this was accomplished long-distance (except for the tasting), as I live 2 hours away from the venue. I would not hesitate to hire Daisy and The Modern Southern Table again. Thanks, Daisy!

Mark was great to work with. He catered a wedding reception for 50. We had a range of tastes among our crowd, and he served something for everyone. Crab cakes and Brie in crust were my personal favs, and the pastries were a great hit. Lovely presentation, Very attentive, reliable (even though I forgot to check my email), and super reasonable. Thank you, Mark, for making our celebration a success!

Catered my wedding reception of a little over 100 people. It was buffet style and was enough for everyone to get seconds. Her prices were very affordable and I plan to use her personal chef services in the near future.

I own a mobile DJ business, and have been at multiple events where Lisa Nelson and Just For the Occasion have catered. I've always been impressed with the overall presentation and professionalism shown. Most recently I experienced JFTO's services at a wedding and reception held at a community shelter house. I had attended other events at this venue and didn't expect much. Lisa and her staff transformed the place into a very elegant setting. Decorations were on point, and the food was delicious Definitely one of the best in the business!

From the very beginning Melissa was such a joy and help in preparing for our 50th Wedding Anniversary Party. During our party of 150 people, Melissa and her staff were absolutely amazing! They were friendly, professional, and very efficient. The food was delicious and we received a lot of great compliments about it. Regarding the overall event my husband's response was "First Class". We will definitely use them again for any event!

After having experienced their expertise at several weddings, we used Creative Cuisine for our company holiday party. Terri Engle was our contact, and she worked with me to customize a menu that fit our budget. Everyone raved about the food. We've had this event at several area restaurants over the years (at more than double the cost) but this was, by far, the best quality meal we've ever had. We recommend Creative Cuisine to all our clients who are looking for great food, at a great price, with awesome customer service.

The food was wonderful. Everything was prepared to perfection. The pulled pork and brisket were flavorful and juicy. I have already recommended this caterer and will use them again. Mr. Yeager took care of everything from salad to the entrée to dessert. I usually prepare all the food for special occasions, but this particular event was hectic and left no time for food prep. Mr. Yeager took care of setting everything up and then broke everything down after. I was able to enjoy family and friends without any stress and the cost was very affordable.

We had an outdoor, summer wedding and chose Road Hog Willy's to do the catering. The food was absolutely outstanding and his catering prices are competitive and fair.....We tried so many different BBQ's from several companies to get the best taste and price. We made the right choice because everyone loved the BBQ and side dishes. Road Hog Willy's will not disappoint no matter what the occasion.

I had to arrange a rehearsal dinner long distance (L.A.) for our son's wedding for 30 people. We had rented a house and this was to also be the location of this dinner. Nicole responded immediately and I cannot adequately describe how experienced, professional, helpful, flexible, cheerful (did I say professional?) she was. She kept our costs down and the food (taco bar) was excellent and more than plentiful (easily fed more who showed up!). Her assistant, Jackie, who did the set-up and serving, was fantastic. Truly, you could not do better than Nicole with her extensive menu, experience and professionalism. I can fully understand that she would also rock as an event planner, which we didn't need. DO contact her with whatever you might need for any event of any size or type. Thanks so much, Nicole!

I found paddy wagon at a bluegrass festival and will go far lengths to find the truck on my work lunch breaks. I then used Paddy Wagon for my wedding catering. Their food is addictively delicious and I'm still hearing about it from our guests. They worked with my budget and were dependable and efficient with 120 guests. Love them!

Kristie is awesome to work with. She goes the extra mile to make wedding dreams come true. If we showed her an example of something we liked she new how to get it, either by making it herself or where to get it.We had a destination wedding and Kristie came to the beach and worked so hard to get us what we wanted. We came home and had a beautiful reception. So many guests replied " it looked like something out of a magazine" it was gorgeous. Kristie spent a lot of time with us working on every detail. She even MADE beautiful hair accessories that looked like antique brooches, found mothers gifts, bridesmaids gifts, she did it all, flowers, food , music, venue, photography. There are so many decisions and details with a wedding that we couldn't have done it with out her. She is so talented and has the best ideas. I would use her services again for parties, dinners, receptions, showers, loved working with her.

Streetside 62 has excellent food for a good value. The restaurant is a terrific place to have a meal in the dining room and a cocktail on the patio. Their catering is top notch (of course it helps dealing with the owner directly). The food does not drop in quality just because it is a catering job. The 2 weddings and a few corporate events catered by Matt where very very good. Would recommend to anyone for sure.

We had a backyard wedding with about 120 guests and wanted something a little different for our dinner menu. Shayda helped us come up with the perfect menu for appetizers and dinner. She was very knowledgeable and was able to tell us exactly how each of our options would turn out affecting the overall dining experience. My husband loves beef bourguignon and the saffron rice dish with chicken that she made was amazingly good. She also came up with a great vegetarian option for a few of our guests. She was very patient with us as we went back and forth on a few of our options, was on time for all our meetings, was at the house and ready to prep and serve on the day of the wedding and the dinner service went exactly as we had planned. We got a ton of compliments on the food after our wedding :) Overall, we loved working with Movable Feast and would recommend them to anyone looking for top quality food with great service

I use Straight From the Heart Catering & event planning the first part of September 2017 for my wedding reception. The owner did excellent job preparing the food. The food tasted superb and the guests were very happy. She showed up a couple hours early to get set up and I would definitely use this catering service again at any of my future events and I would give a strong recommendation for this catering service to anyone else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
