Kelsha did an excellent job with my project. He installed baseboard trim, door casing, crown molding, repaired my laminate floor, removed a built in shelf to an interior wall, and patched the hole with drywall for me to paint. I provided all the materials, and he went to work promptly on time. He worked efficiently and didn't take any breaks, even though I would have been OK if he had as I was paying him for the project and not hourly. He completed all of the work in a reasonable amount of time, and he did a great job. I would definitely hire him again and recommend him to family and friends. He is not pushy and is very reasonable. If you need a project completed, I would get a free estimate from him to the very least. Thanks Kelsha.

Thanks, Amy. You are the best! It just wasn’t working for me! I had grown weary of the décor in my small townhouse, but never considered seeking the support of an interior designer because of my fear that he/she would create my space according to his/her tastes and make recommendations that I could not afford. I do not enjoy shopping (don’t judge) and it is difficult for me to determine if what I like in the store will translate well to my home. I languished in a swivit of indecision for months. Then an angel appeared: Enter Amy Gordon. Amy, in her quiet, hardworking, observant way, addressed all of my concerns and created not only an aesthetic space but she was very practical about it. Her innate ability to understand my preferences and design style – that I didn’t even know I had – was uncanny. Actually, now I sometimes get up a little earlier to allow myself time to sit quietly and bask in the beauty Amy created for me.

Lori was very flexible in scheduling and took adequate time to discuss alternative treatments. We are redoing a downstairs bath. She is knowledgeable of trends but also appreciates and is adaptable to various styles of home decor. We would not hesitate to engage Lori for a future project.

Kelli brings a smart look and feel to her work. In my case, she provided the guidance and assistance I needed to clean up my home and impart some order and style to a plain (and admittedly messy) living space. She is conscientious and professional, and will help apply some laser-like focus where needed!

We recently had Philip Evangelisti, of Sunny Ridge, complete a paver patio for our new home. I originally reached out through Thumbtack for someone to build a patio. Philip was the first of several contractors to respond to my request. My husband and I set up a time to meet with Philip to discuss our requirements. He arrived in a timely manner, and presented himself in a very professional manner. I already had a basic design in mind, so Philip worked off of that plan to finalize a drawing for us. He made numerous suggestions as to the best way to approach our project, as well as helping to guide us regarding what type of materials would best serve our purpose. After a couple of meetings with Philip and obtaining a quote for the work, we felt confident that he could take on the project and do a great job. Let me mention that we often like to hire entrepreneurs in order to help them get started in their business and allow them to hone in on their skills. With that desire in mind, we hired Philip to build our patio. Although he is a little young, he has quite a bit of experience and knowledge in numerous areas. Our faith in his skills indeed paid off. Philip worked with us throughout the entire project to make sure that we were informed about what, why, and how he was doing things. Since we were building a portion of our patio over the top of a concrete slab, it was necessary for him to make modifications in order to have one continuous flat patio upon completion. My husband and I shopped for the necessary supplies, and even had a couple of calls with him to make sure that what we were getting would work. (These calls were on a weekend, and while he was out of town, but he was more than happy to talk with us.) We set up delivery of our supplies, and Philip promptly got started on our project. He often hired his brother to help him with the job. The two of them worked hard, in the hot summer heat, and completed the patio in a timely manner. Philip knew what he was doing, he knew how to do it, and took great care each step of the way. I made a modification to the way we were going to have our steps, and Philip just took it in stride and worked with us to make it work. He even went with us to purchase the supplies and helped us figure out what we needed. We are EXTREMELY pleased with our patio, and have received numerous compliments about how beautiful it turned out. Unfortunately I did not take pictures of the completed project before we put everything on the patio, but I believe you will see just how awesome it looks from these pictures. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to hire Philip again if we would have any other project. I also would certainly recommend him to anyone that is looking to hire a contractor. His prices are more than fair, he often went above and beyond what was required, and he is willing to work hard to get the job done in a professional and timely manner. Debbie Scott

I am a Real Estate Agent who hired U’nique Designz to decorate three of my client’s homes. The homes had been on the market for a while and were not selling as well as we expected. Angelique was very professional and did an outstanding job. She was able to rearrange and modernize living rooms, dining rooms, and bathrooms while making them more appealing. Angelique’s designs were needed, to give my clients a refresher and hope in selling their properties. Today I have sold one of the homes, and the other two are now in contract. I have decided to keep Angelique with U’nique Designz in my contacts as a resource, and added entity for my clients, to give them the reassurance that their homes will be sold without a doubt. U’nique Desginz is awesome for anyone in my field of business looking for that added touch when selling/renting property and her prices are very reasonable.

Restyled by Rita was able to restyle our home by focusing on what appeals to the majority of the buying market, which includes lots of natural light and great flow throughout the house. By rearranging furniture and creating new focal points Rita made my house irresistible to new buyers. She picked up on the color palette I had already established in my house based on the visual cues, and carried it throughout the house tying each room together. We were loving our newly designed home so much, that if we weren't in need of more space we might have never moved. We'd hoped we'd find a buyer quickly, and we did! Our house was on the market one week before we got an offer at top dollar! Houses in our area were on the market for an average of 6 weeks so to get an offer the first week was fantastic. Several of the houses in our neighborhood had to drop their prices by 5-15 thousand dollars to find a buyer while we were able to accept our first offer without dropping our price. Investing the time and money upfront to stage your house does pay off in the long run. The first two weeks on the market is your best chance to sell. Everyone who toured our house commented on how well it showed, scoring a 4 out of 5. Our house sold quickly because it appealed to buyers and they could picture themselves living there. As a busy Mom of 3 I know life gets busy and restyling our home, for many of us, is not a priority. Rita was able to bring a fresh eye to rearrange our furniture and accessories to transform each room. Having Rita style or restyle a home gives it a breath of fresh air and charm. Teaching me tips along the way and using design elements that were already in my house made old rooms new again! We loved how Rita restyled our home to sell and can't wait to have her design and style our new home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
