Jim fixed up my laundry room with shelves and hooks and cabinets. Totally improved the space. He did exactly what I wanted to done but was also really thoughtful about how to do it. He clearly knows a lot about a lot of different aspects of home improvement. He was also really responsive, really respectful of the time, dove and budget and totally pleasant to have around -though ckearly focused on the project. Will be calling Jim a lot.

Jesse and Tyler did a fantastic job on my bathroom remodel. They were great with communication, respectful of my home and property during demo and building, and they worked extremely hard. Never taking shortcuts or the easy way out. They took pride in their work, and even had some phenomenal suggestions on style and décor, based on my preferences. They always willingly worked around my crazy work schedule over a period of many weeks. They made me feel like I was their only customer, and on top of all of this, they were stand-up, friendly guys to work with through this whole process. When I am ready to do more work in my home, they will be my first choice!

Ed Davis did a great job installing my front window. Other window companies would not do such a small job. The price was reasonable and the quality of the work was great. Ed is the type of person that you can leave alone in your home while you go to work. Thanks Ed!

Bottom line, Mr. Napier is an old-school repair man. No frills, no overhead, no travel fee. Just a flat rate per hour for what you need fixed, he will repair it. For my repairs I needed items fixed like a leaky shower faucet and leaky toilet shutoff valve, hardwiring a dishwasher into a non-plug-in connection, and laying adhesive tiles in a bathroom. After Mr. Napier arrived and assessed the specific materials needed, he made a list for me of the necessary parts and materials, so he proceeded to work on some of the fixes while I went to Lowe's. As he worked, he even explained how certain parts become non-functioning over time and what to watch out for to save yourself some money in replacing them. If you are not a handy kind of person at all and don’t know much about various home improvement materials and parts, it would be best that Mr. Napier first go with you to the home improvement store together and purchase the necessary materials so all of your repairs can be worked on straight through. I would hire Mr. Napier again.

Nathaniel and his crew were complete life savers! When our roof developed a leak weeks after being ‘repaired’ by another company he came out same day to assess the situation. He quickly explained the problem and how to remedy. His team was very polite and professional and completed the repairs quickly. We will definitely be using this company again in our new home.

Larry did a fabulous job on a difficult repair of a brick post on our driveway. He came out to see it the day I hired him and came out to do the work 2 days later. He arrived promptly at 6:30 AM. He figured out how to do the repair without tearing down and rebuilding the whole post, thus saving us a lot of money. He was able to use our bricks, so they match and he did a beautiful job in 3 hours. He is very knowledgeable, a professional mason, a very pleasant person to have at your home and very reasonably priced. The post looks great. You would never know a car backed into it. We plan to hire him for some other brick work. I recommend him highly.

Josh designed, painted & installed wainscotting on the ceiling of two bathrooms. The quality of his miter cuts were spot on considering our home is 50 years old with uneven walls. He also painted the walls in both bathrooms. He was very friendly, timely and cleaned up after his work. We would highly recommend him and will be using him again soon for other projects.

I requested Drywall estimate for a ceiling removal in the kitchen (old drop ceiling with the plastic sheets for Florescent lighting ) . Kelsha responded quickly and personnaly showed up to introduce himself. I quickly realized Kelsha was more than just drywall contractor. His work and helper were there when they said and performed perfect in removal of many parts of the home I was remodeling. We did total bathroom remodel as well as walls removed throughout the home. They cleaned up everyday they were on the job and never had to question anything. Kelsha was so talented in Finished Trim, Drywall, and general construction all the stress of the multiple projects in the home Kelsha performed always in a professional way. Always was the early man on the job and kept in touch thruout with other trades to cordinate the work load . Kelsha would constantly call to inform me of progress and what I needed to purchase to keep the flow moving forward. I forgot to mention his ability in framing walls whenever needed which I found myself needing during the remodel. We added and removed multiple walls and Kelsha finish work made them all look as if they never happened. I strongly recommend Kelsha Speedlimit Construction for all your drywall , framing and finish Carpentry jobs. Small or large you will be happy with Kelsha on the job.

Zac was awesome! Very nice and professional. We had 3 layers of shingles on our house. I didn't think that there was any way that they could get it done in one day. I came home from work that day and had a new, beautiful roof. And everything was cleaned up perfectly!

I can't recommend Mid Ohio Contracting enough! They were able to repair some tile work in my kitchen and master shower and their work seamlessly flowed to the rest of the tile in the area. They were able to schedule me within a week of coming out for the initial consult. The value was incredible and was thousands of dollars less than the other quote i received. I will certainly call Mid Ohio Contracting in the future for any home repairs!

Our basement remodel project was completed in a very timely manner. The cost quote was in line compared with two others, and less expensive than some. But the most impressive thing about David Richards Home Improvements was the ability to set a MUCH shorter timeline than any other company. And, they delivered to that schedule! We are very pleased with how our basement turned out. No corners were cut. Quality services provided from beginning to end of the project. I would recommend David Richards Home Improvements for a basement project.

Daniel West Masonry & Construction Services has been VERY professional so far. I have tried several flooring installers and I’ve had trouble with each. They even recommended a place to look for our flooring called Floor & Decor. When we went shopping at this retailer, we were extremely impressed with the quality of the wood-look tile and engineered hardwood. You cannot get that type of quality at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Floor & Decor blows them out of the water with the thickness of their flooring. There is literally no bad option there, and they have very low prices that impressed us! I have not yet used them to lay the flooring down yet, but I have so much faith in them that I know they’ll do a wonderful job as they know what they’re talking about, and through other reviews I’ve read they do a wonderful job. This is how much confidence I have in this company. I would highly recommend using them for your next flooring project, and as a bonus they are very affordable!

Luke did a great job remodeling our bathroom and mudroom, while also doing our garage addition. The process of getting detailed specifications, 3-D drawings and transparent pricing upfront made the process very straightforward from the beginning. Once we started, Luke's communication on scheduling and following through on all the details to ensure everything went smoothly and to our satisfaction was greatly appreciated and valued. Luke brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to our home that was very beneficial, including knowing how to get high quality from certain vendors for a reasonable price. Not only did he do well on the projects that we used him on, but he also helped us with general recommendations and contacts for some other home improvements where Luke did not need to be involved. He genuinely enjoyed helping us improve our home. I highly recommend getting his insight and using his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
