Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does carpet cleaning cost per square foot?

In some cases, a quote from a carpet cleaning company will depend on the square footage of the room. The lower end of these prices will be between $0.15 and $0.20 per square foot, and they may rise as high as $0.40-$0.50 per square foot. Factors raising the price include the carpet’s condition (are there stains?) and whether they have to clean carpeted stairs, which take longer.

Which is better: steam cleaning or shampooing carpet?

Both steam cleaning and shampooing are tried-and-true methods for getting dirt and stains out of your carpets. The methods are different, however.

Steam cleaning will remove dirt from your carpets via hot water extraction, while shampooing requires scrubbing. If you’re in a time crunch, or if you just have one or two small spots that need to be removed, shampooing may be a better option, as it allows you to spot-clean small areas. Both steam cleaning and shampooing make your carpets wet, so you will need to allow for time for the carpets to dry.

Contact carpet cleaning pros near you, and discuss the best options for your carpets.

Is it worth getting carpets professionally cleaned?

Purchasing a steam cleaner yourself may help to remove stubborn stains, but it simply won’t match the deep clean and efficiency that comes from hiring a professional carpet cleaner. Pros have powerful tools that can quickly remove even the most stubborn stains.

If you’re selling your home, clean carpets can make your home more appealing to prospective buyers. And the expense is offset when you consider that you only need to get your carpets cleaned about once a year. Plus, professional carpet cleaning can extend the life of your carpets, saving you money in the long run.

How long does carpet cleaning take?

Given the way it can transform the carpet, cleaning happens remarkably quickly. You can expect an average size room to require about 20 minutes to thoroughly clean.

The job could take longer for several reasons. If the stains are widespread or particularly deep, the professional cleaner might need to spend more time removing them. They may also need to take time to move furniture out of the way.

How long does it take for carpet to dry after cleaning?

After a cleaning, you can expect your carpet to remain slightly damp for between six and 12 hours. You can expect the lower end of this figure if the air is dry, there’s plenty of air circulation or the temperature isn’t too low in your house. However, for humid environments or lower temperatures, your carpet could stay damp for longer.

What is dry carpet cleaning?

Dry carpet cleaning uses very little moisture to clean carpets. Instead, this method uses compound cleaning agents to loosen dirt that might be trapped in the carpet’s fibers. It’s an effective way to remove stains from soiled carpets.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a professional carpet cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Set up a virtual appointment to discuss the scope of work. Conducting the consultation over video conference or phone call will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines

Start by messaging a professional steam cleaner or carpet cleaner near you, and ask them if they would be willing to talk by phone or video call. Be sure to ask them how they handle payments and what precautions they have in place to keep you and your household safe.

How can I find out if a professional carpet cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Local and federal governments are currently in the process of defining essential services guidelines, and it’s best to read them to see whether professional carpet cleaning or steam cleaning is considered essential. A good place to start is with your city or state’s government website.

The CISA's Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors on a federal level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do professional carpet cleaners or steam cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

While cleaning services such as professional carpet cleaning or steam cleaning are not typically done remotely, many businesses and professionals are making changes to accommodate the CDC's social distancing guidelines. If you come across a carpet cleaner’s profile and it states they’re offering remote services, contact the cleaner to see what those services include.

They came in on a weekend and took their time cleaning the carpet. Didn't act like it was an inconvenience. They didn't try to sell me on anything else than what I had asked to be done.

Herman is a kind, knowledgeable gentelman. He greatly exceeded my expectations on the carpet cleaning he provided for us today! I have used other carpet cleaners in the past and never received the great care and excellent results I did today! I didn't think our carpet could look this good again, he brought it back to life! I couldn't be more pleased. Herman was prompt, he explained exactly how he cleans the carpet and about the products he uses in detail. He also was very kind and patient taking time to answer all of my questions. Herman clearly takes pride in his work and truly cares about the satisfaction of his clients. His prices are very reasonable too. I will definitely be calling Herman again and I will highly recommend Herman to my family and friends! Thanks again Herman, !!!! Sharon and Mary

Brandon did a great job all around. He was able to accommodate my busy schedule and the job itself was performed quickly and efficiently. I am very satisfied with the results of the carpet cleaning as all the dog stains are gone! His job did what I wouldn't have been able to do on my own as his experience shows in the finished work. He was very nice and personable; I will definitely do business with again.

Please let me clarify, I did not hire them and yes they did opt out of cleaning my carpets but only after I started asking questions. Prior I could of just simply booked the job sent my address and they would have shown up. Things became an issue when I questioned him. He is throwing up a smoke screen to confuse the issue here. My review is based on communications with the company. We all know communication is critical to success and in this case one side communication is the only acceptable type. I requested a quote and wanted a little clarification on how they handled cleaning since in the past I have had detergent left in the carpet and carpet left really wet after the cleaners left, as you can see on the companies reviews it was also brought up one other time. Instead of answering my questions and offering any level of reassurance this is the response I got in return. "I really don't know what else to tell you. It sounds as though you have had amateurs doing your carpet or inexperienced people doing your carpet. We don't like to start off like this so it seems as though you have a lot of doubt lingering and that really isn't to our benefit. We found that when people have leftover problems they tend to want to take them out on the next person that does there cleaning even if it is effective and without previous problems. It might be best for you to use another cleaner you seen our reviews hopefully and you seen our process if you still have questions about our bility to do this without the problems please by all means find someone who can erase those doubts. I am aware that our quote was probably the lowest and as much as we try to inform the public that they should never just choose the lowest quote we still tend to get a lot of people who do that we don't want that nor do we need that we are an experienced company small but highly effective and although we deeply appreciate your interest in US we think it's better that you go with someone else because it looks like we might end up with a no-win situation given your concerns. Thanks so much and we hope you find someone that you can work with thanks have a great day" I own two disable veteran-owned business that is customer service oriented, we relish the opportunity to reassure our potential clients regardless of past issues and show them how a true customer-focused company does business. I would never allow someone to basically say sorry you have questions and a bad experience go find someone else. The idea that a bunch of reviews makes you a good business is nonsense you can buy likes and reviews all day long. On here all you have to do is have an email. This is not the way to do business!
