JJ did an amazing job at our bridal shower/cocktail party. He went above and beyond what we expected and ensured our glasses were always full. He cleaned up after himself and also helped us with other tasks without asking. Everyone enjoyed the event and we would not hesitate to hire him once again.

We found Jauna to be very helpful with the theme of our Champagne Party. Jauna was great in getting a menu for shellfish and gluetin allergies. She was very easy to work with, and we will certainly use her services again. Thank you Jauna!

We had a great experience with Chef Mark, and would highly recommend him for anybody looking to host an event. We used him for a private dinner party for 12 guests at our house. He was very approachable and receptive to menu ideas. We came up with a complete 4 course menu with a server included for a fair price. The food was excellent. Had many compliments from guests. Mark is very professional and prepared. Detail oriented. Highly recommend.

Dos Hermanos is amazing! Best tacos in town! I know that sounds a little fake but I would really recommend them to anyone. I had them cater my graduation party. Not only was the food delicious, Lisa and her staff are awesome. P.S. I recommend the chicken tacos with the hot salsa.

They are detail oriented, punctual, and provide service with a smile. Not only are they great caterers but great decorators as well. The table linens, decorations, and fresh flowers made a huge impact! The food was delicious and the presentation was fantastic! I could not have asked for a better company to help me plan my wife’s special day. Thanks Just For The Occasion, LLC. I could not have done it without you! I look forward to working with you again in the future. A. Wood

Thank You to My Gourmet Caterer for catering my son's Graduation Party !!! The food was a hit and much talked about. Chef Nathaniel was wonderful to work with. I could tell from my very first conversation with the Chef that he had excellent work ethic. He understood my needs and helped me with the menu. He also gave me great suggestions about every aspect of the party. I am glad I listened to his suggestion about having a pizza station as well. The pizza oven was a hit. His crew worked efficiently on the day of the party. Guests thought that I have used My Gourmet Caterer for years for my everts but actually this was just my first time. I had not even sampled all their food except for one dish. I sought them very late and too close to the party that we didn't have time to sample all the food in my menu. Chef also recommended the Bakery. The cake was a hit as well. It was like having family cook for you on the day of your big event in your house. It was pure peace of mind. I would absolutely hire them for my next party !!!!! Thank You again !

Love these guys! The Food is spectacular! You can get your street meat with a twist! One of my favorite things about seeing these guys around downtown (besides the food) is the price! For how amazing their food is you would think it was going to be super expensive, but its anywhere from 6-10 bucks! Another one of the great things about these guys, is they have a vegetarian option! I can't tell you how many times I'm downtown late night wanting a snack and the only thing these vendors have is meat... But have NO FEAR the Slamwich Brothers are here! And they will hook you up with the MiMi burger which is a veggie burger loaded with toppings on an amazing brioche bun!! Last but not least you can't beat the customer service. These guys are just genuine bros, making a living at something they love to do! So don't be scared to spark a conversation with these guys, they're outgoing and always up to get feedback from their customers. So if you're looking for some great funkin food, or looking for someone to cater your grad parties, block parties, work parties, etc., these guys are a phenomenal choice!

After having experienced their expertise at several weddings, we used Creative Cuisine for our company holiday party. Terri Engle was our contact, and she worked with me to customize a menu that fit our budget. Everyone raved about the food. We've had this event at several area restaurants over the years (at more than double the cost) but this was, by far, the best quality meal we've ever had. We recommend Creative Cuisine to all our clients who are looking for great food, at a great price, with awesome customer service.

Robert catered my husband's 50th surprise birthday party for 40 guests at our home in Westerville. His service, presentation and food were all exceptional. He made our special event unforgettable and all of our friends and family raved about how great the food was. Robert prepared lobster tail, shrimp and chicken Chardonnay plus sides. He interacted and mingled with family and guests and has a great and warm personality. I would highly recommend him to all our friends and family. Great job Robert!

I had a very short timeline to cater my New Year's Party (it started as a small gathering and turned into a full blown 40+ party the weekend before New Years Eve) so I posted my needs to Thumbtack. Leah responded to my request in less than 15 minutes after I posted it and worked with me to determine an affordable solution that fit my timeline and budget. She was honest and fair with her quote and even worked with me to find ways to save costs. She delivered the food on time and allowed me to use her chafing dishes and serving equipment as well as fuel to keep everything hot. Our party was Gatsby-themed, so she suggested a 1920's style glazed ham entree/side combo with potatoes and carrots in a delicious sauce as well as another dish of chicken and rice with veggies and asparagus in a rosemary butter sauce. The food was also presented very well, and her attention to detail was great. We also had 2 large servings of Walforf Salad that was a big hit as well. Overall, the food was delicious, it was delivered on time and best of all it was all done with basically a 1 day notice. I highly recommend Leah's services to anyone looking for delicious food at a fair price. I would not hesitate to hire her again for future parties because everyone at my party only had great things to say about all the food.

This woman made my dreams come true! I could go on and on about everything wonderful she did for me, but I'll say she did everything I had asked her, but made it ten times better. My beach destination wedding was the most beautiful scene I've ever seen, it could have been in a magazine. She made my arch out of branches, in 90 degree weather, in the sand! (Meaning she traveled for our wedding). Then for the reception back home she turned an old barn into an elegant dinner party, full of beautiful lights, flowers, and the best country style decor. All of our guests complimented her work. I would highly recommend her to anybody. And I'd definitely use her again for a party!

Streetside 62 has excellent food for a good value. The restaurant is a terrific place to have a meal in the dining room and a cocktail on the patio. Their catering is top notch (of course it helps dealing with the owner directly). The food does not drop in quality just because it is a catering job. The 2 weddings and a few corporate events catered by Matt where very very good. Would recommend to anyone for sure.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
