I'm moving from another state and needed help getting some appliances disconnected and moved out of the home that I'm moving into. It's not easy to manage tasks remotely, but Jeff and company made it so much less stressful with their speedy communications, friendliness, and top-rate professionalism. I received photos of the completed job, and I am so happy with the results. I highly recommend Blue Truck Enterprise!!!

Andrews Moving & Storage did an excellent job on our move. They had the lowest rates for the distance we moved, and they were very careful with our things. Scheduling our move was very easy and flexible, as well. Everyone we talked to at Andrews Moving & Storage was very professional, and their office even called during the middle of our move to see how satisfied we were. I would highly recommend Andrews Moving & Storage to anyone moving locally or across the country. Thank you to everyone there for making our move easy and financially feasible. You are awesome!

When I was looking to move, I called several moving companies to get quotes and all the price that I was getting where very high. I was going to move my self then I came across veterans Moving Service. Dave came out and gave me an estimate and I like the price that he quoted me. I hired Dave and Veterans Moving Service. Came to moving day Veterans moving service showed up when he said he would, Dave was kind and courteous, he also took well care of my furniture and household belongings put them in the rooms that they were supposed to be in even help set up the beds. If and when I move again I would use veterans Moving Service again. I give this company two thumbs up. Thank you Dave and Veterans moving services !!!

WOW! isn't good enough to describe Mike and his crew. My neighbor used them and I saw their sign and asked how there experience was. Just like my neighbors a full move done with not even a scratch on anything. It amazes me how two guys could finish my house in 7 hours. They didn't take any breaks, except when I forced them to eat. All day in the hot sun, sofa after dresser. I highly recommend these guys for anyone moving local in Cleveland. With their hourly rate if your moving a short distance you will probably save money! Mike and Brian thanks so so much! Barbra Harris

Gamidov Movers moved conducted a local move for me for a one bedroom apartment. Minus one because they weren't particularly careful with my stuff (lots of scratches and dents even though I did decline to have them wrap everything so its part on me), and one of the guys in the crew it was his first day on the job so he needed a lot of pointers from his crew chief. High marks for being nice and easy to work with though. There were a couple things that "went wrong" day of, and the movers were incredibly understanding and flexible. Just really nice guys.

Dwayne did a great job on the floors in my home. The floors in the home that I was moving in to were in really terrible shape, and rather than a complete overhaul I just wanted a touch up that would cover some of the blemishes and add a shine. Dwayne knew exactly what I was looking for and was easy to work with at an extremely reasonable price. I will be working with him again.

Don and his crew did an unbelievable job moving one of our daycare facilities to another location. He arrive promptly to give a quote on the same day that I called and he also was hired on the spot not because of the price but because his professionalism and experience. They arrived 5 minutes ahead of scheduled time and finished 1 and1/2 hrs sooner than projected. You don't see that from hourly moving companies.!! It's usually 2 hrs longer. Best brothers handled our equipment as if it was their own. I know everyone hates moving but with best brothers moving it was a blessing It made our moving transition so smooth and simple... Thanks Don and crew you'll be the only one we call when we have moving needs .

The job was done well despite the many obstacles one can imagine moving a 14' truckload of stuff out of the 18th floor of a downtown apartment where you had to take two elevators just to get to the loading dock inside of a garage! Silvijo didn't complain or try to charge me more, but completed the job (actually moved way more stuff than I had originally described!). And for moving only a mile or two away the price was very fair. Some minor cosmetic damage to a few items (though I did not take the time to wrap anything so it's really my fault), but nothing was seriously damaged. Hired him the same week my lease was week. I was getting other quotes ranging from $400-$700, sooooo long story short, would definitely hire again. Thanks again Silvijo (and Josef).

This company is beyond amazing I had hired movers (Move This Out, LLC) using Thumbtack in early July. The day of my move, September 8th, they didn't show up. I called Thumbtack to see what was going on because no one was answering the phone. Thankfully American Transporters came through and saved me. A lady from thumbtack support was able to book an appointment the same day with these gentlemen. They were extremely professional. They came out on time. They worked efficiently. I was astonished that they helped me out in a crisis and did so well. I couldn't have asked for more. If you want a courteous team of movers to take of you and make your move as easy as possible, this is it. Everyone hates moving, but with ATMC I forgot how hard it was. I could keep going on and on, but the bottom line as that you should love with them!

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
