The original carpet installer did not show up on us and we had a tight deadline. Then I downloaded the thumbtack app and found Sully‘s flooring. With in an hour notice two guys came to our rental property and gave us a quote. The next day Sunday nonetheless they came out to our property and installed vinyl as well as carpet. These two did a fantastic job on the vinyl and the carpet and were very professional. We are going to be hiring them again for a future job. We highly recommend Sully’s flooring for any of your carpet and/or vinyl needs.

Mr Ralphes installed laminate wood flooring in my kitchen within the past few months. My wife and I along with our grandchildren have walked on it extensively since that time. There have been no issues or problems with the floor. It looks good because we liked the pattern we picked out ( wood grain ) and because Mr Ralphes workmanship was outstanding. He completed the work in the time frame he stated and charged us what he originally quoted. He was personable, his work excellent, and his rates were competitive. I will definitely use his services again when the need arises.

Jeff and his crew were absolutely amazing!! My floors look gorgeous and we always receive compliments on them. I would highly recommend him for all flooring projects!! In Fall '15, we had all our flooring replaced in our home (+4000 sq ft). We refinished existing hardwood in kitchen, installed hardwood in 1st/2nd floors, installed laminate hardwood in the basement, as well as installed stairs. Jeff committed timing, pricing, quality and over-delivered on all vectors. We are extremely pleased and he was so worth it! This was my first time hiring from Thumbtack, so I was a bit nervous, but I would not hesitate to hire Jeff again.

I hired Dream Catcher Renovations to install new vinyl siding and gutters on my home. After being told by another contractor that our home would need thousands in prep work to the walls to get the siding to look good, Brian provided us with solutions that stayed within our budget saving us thousands and now I have a beautiful home. I was very impressed with Brian's problem solving abilities and his attention to detail. His skills and expertise showed through in the end product. From his genuine and friendly disposition to his conscientious approach and skilled crew I highly recommend Dream Catcher and will definitely use them again.

After submitting a request for quotes here on Thumbtack for someone to lay 900 sq ft of laminate floor, we received half dozen or so contacts. We chose Wilson Construction Services initially because Thumbtack showed they had passed a background check and were a gold star member, and had excellent reviews. We contacted Mr. Wilson, he came out the next day, gave us a reasonable quote on the job, sounded knowledgable when telling us what needed done. He was prepared with a basic contract for services and cost. He agreed to pick up and deliver the 39 boxes of flooring and finish materials. He did what he said he would do, he and his crew were timely, friendly, and worked steady while on site. And cleaned up their mess when they were done! The floor look great, we have received several comments on the quality of the work. Couldn't be happier with Wilson Construction Services. Will definitely consider them again in the future and recommend them to you.

My family and I are very pleased with the work Gary did on our bathroom remodel. He and his helper, Eric, were courteous, professional, thoughtful, and thorough. Gary takes pride in his work and strives for excellence. He replaced our bathroom ceiling and removed our bathroom floor (including subfloor) and installed new wood and vinyl tiles. His attention to detail was impeccable, and he took the time to do things right. It was worth it!! Gary and Eric also did a great job cleaning up throughout the entire project. I intend to hire Gary again for more work in the future.

David was very honest and up front with his work. His team did a great job installing the laminate flooring and he was also flexible when I had a last minute cancellation and rescheduled. The only one thing that could use improvement is training the installers to clean up after the job. His price is not cheap, but a bit above average.

The first time Chris came to my home was to install 800 sq/ft of laminate flooring. He and his team were professional and courteous to my family. They finished the job in one day and that included sawing down my door frames to accommodate the height of the laminate flooring. Since then, Chris and his team have tiled both my bathrooms, an entry way and laid all the carpet in my house. Not to mention paining most of my upstairs rooms. If you are looking for a good contractor with fair prices, that can tackle most any jobs. Look no more than Chris and the crew from Northeast Ceramic Tile.

We had new laminate flooring installed by MTF Enterprises and we told them we were in a rush 1300 sq ft and needed it done in two days, everyone else said they couldn't do it in that time frame. John came out and looked at the job and told me no problem to get it done in two days I was very skeptical but he was the only one who said they could do it. Saturday morning John showed up at 9 a.m. and had one helper I was real skeptical then two people to do it. Amazingly they worked 8 hours on Saturday and finished it up by 4 on Sunday afternoon and did a great job. I have given out his name to many people since and plan on having him do more work on my new home. Mark H. Mason, Ohio

Installation of vinyl tile in upstairs full bathroom. Needed repair of water-damaged subfloor in one area and installation of multiply throughout, then tile square installation. He also provided threshold to carpet in the next room and edging to minimize any future water damage next to the shower. Ray Richards did a terrific job from the initial email exchanges establishing scope of work to the final clean-up where he left the bathroom and the connecting bedroom cleaner than he found them! He was very prompt in replying to my post and scheduling the work. He was attentive to detail with tile fitting in three closets as well as around toilet and cabinetry. Ray explained everything well and was a pleasure to work with. Cost was reasonable and matched the value of the work. I will definitely call on him again for any future flooring needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
