I had some specific questions about how my gutters were functioning and if water leakage was connected with my gutters being clogged. Joe answered my questions, and provided recommendations that seemed reasonable, recommending that I assess the leakage in the basement after the next rain since my guttters had been so clogged with roofing materials. He also had a solution should I still notice a problem, and offered to come back out the next week as needed. Thank you Joe the Gutter Guy! Sincerely, Lois

When I saw that I had a roof leak I went on Thumbtack to find a roofer. AAA Roofing Company was the first company to reply back to me. After looking at their website, I realized they were the same company that had put a new roof on my neighbor's house last year and did a wonderful job, so I hired them for my repair. The owner, Roy Hanna, was very nice when I called him and made time in his schedule to get my roof repair completed the same day. The roofers he sent to do my repair were very professional & courteous, and I found Mr. Hanna to be very pleasant to work with. I am going to hire them again to do a full roof replacement next spring. I would definitely recommend this company!!

Mr. Schafer has been my "go to" contractor for all of the construction projects in and outside of my house since 2006. I have called him to complete over 10 projects from building a fence to rebuilding my kitchen. Every job was completed within the agreed timeline and above my expectations!

Prime Construction and Restoration replaced my roof and gutters after a tree fell on it. They did the work 3 months sooner than other companies wanted to, and they handled all the insurance paperwork. He explained everything in Plain English and got permission from the insurance company to pay for all the damage not spotted by the insurance adjuster and/or to bring the roof up to date with newer building codes. The quality of the work was great and the service was excellent. I highly recommend Prime Construction and Restoration for your roofing needs.

I had some rotting wood trim around my front windows as a result of shoddy workmanship and inferior materials used by the builder. The wood rot compromised the seal of my window. Our initial thoughts and what Darrin planned on was a simply replacing the wood trim and remediation the seal around the widows. However, once Darrin started working, he discover the wood exterior was rotten on both sides of the Windows to the studs. Darrin showed me every discovery he made so I knew I was likely in store for more than I had originally planned. The result was removal of over 3/4 of the siding; repair of the wood exterior; wrapping the wood exterior in Tyvek as it was not previously wrapped: replacing the wood trim with quality cedar; putting the trim back and finally sealing the wood trim to ensure no future leaks. Not only was Darrin diligent and thorough in his work, but surprisingly affordable for the amount of work he completed. I would not recommend the builder (Rockford Homes) but have already recommended Darrin to a co-worker with similar issues from the same builder.

Ok, so I've hired over 15 contractors in the past 3 weeks and spent about $45k polishing this mid century modern house we just bought. My interaction with Craig from M&N Roofing has been the best contractor experience I've ever had working with one. I'm not embellishing. His construction knowledge and work ethic is on point and obviously honest. All commitments and promises, oral and in writing were met and often exceeded. His pricing is fair. His contract is reasonable. I really feel like we both got a good deal.I have no complaints. The workers cleaned up superbly. And Craig came back the next morning to carefully walk and reinspect our roof to ensure no corners were cut. His hand held industrial magnet was always full with picked up roofing nails, and there's zero trash and roofing nails when he was done with his inspection. I especially appreciated how his crew listened and were careful to not let any roofing trash or grit contaminate our recently acquired koi pond. No fish were harmed. Perfect. THIS is the company to hire if you're looking for a 4 or 5 star rated impact resistant new tear off roof installed. I'm going to save $217 a year off of my $1205 yearly homeowner's insurance policy by having a new 4 star rated impact resistant roof installed. Suggest you call your homeowner's ins. agent and ask about that, too. You don't get it unless your roofer fills out the certificate and you remember to ask for it. A telling point how good they are and how they take their profession seriously is that when I asked Craig as I was considering him if he had any local references whom I could speak with, and he absolutely did! So many other contractors in all professions simply do not do this because they don't care or they don't ask their raving fan customers to speak up for them. So Craig up and calls a previous roof purchaser who happens to live exactly 500 yards away from me, to pick up the phone and tell me about his roof tear off purchase experience. A block away. And I found Craig on Thumbtack, not Yelp or by word of mouth.... Craig can ask me to call his new roof purchaser prospects anytime...I'm there for him. He earned it. It just can't get any better a purchasing experience than this! Hire them without hesitation.

It was a small project, but the contractor went beyond my expectations in fabricating and installing the flashing materials. He took the time needed to do the job properly, even though it took longer than he had estimated.

Jim completed masonry work for us, putting stacked stone on the front of our older two story house. We had never worked with stone before so we really appreciated his help in where to find the best price and what to look for and how it should be applied. He has definitely had a lot of experience and did a great job. Now he is finishing up the house by doing the siding and trimming out the windows. We were lucky to find someone who could do both, and tie the two together nicely. We were lucky to find someone who could reuse our old vinyl siding, and Jim did not mind carefully taking it off and stacking it for its new owner.

Good work and a fair price. Needed some repair work done to the roof. Most roofers only want a full roof job, not a repair. They delivered! Assessed the damaged roof decking and matched the shingles to a very close shade. I will be recommending them to my friends and family when they need work. I own several houses, and these guys definitely earned a spot in my preferred contractor list.

Brian and his team did a great job sourcing and installing our 425' of wood split rail fence with Chicken wire. He worked with Menard's to source all of the material, I paid Menard's directly, and he only charged me for labor. Price was the most competitive of anyone I spoke with, and he completed the job using my suggested method of installation (gravel base for posts to allow water to escape, backfilled with concrete...stainless staples for chicken wire). Had a small misunderstanding on the permit, but in the end Brian took care of this. I highly recommend Brian for fence work.

J&P Restoration did an outstanding job on our house. They replace the whole roof from the wood to the beams that were rotted from years of wear and tear from mother nature. They replaced the siding along with the gutters which made a drastic transformation on my property. They were on time and very efficient with the work and I would recommend them to anyone that needs roofing or siding work done. Very satisfied and will use them again on my other properties.

Jason Jones and Absolute Assurance Restorations just completed a major roofing job for us, and I am so glad that we chose them! Jason was able to work with our insurance company and my only out-of-pocket cost is my deductible. He redid the entire roof including new decking and gutter guards, and is even repainting our porch ceiling. He is also installing new and upgraded soffit vents and has replaced our attic vent fan with a new one. He completely reengineered a flat section of roof, giving it a slope to throw off water and installed new decking and rubber membrane. His crew worked rapidly and were very neat. Jason is himself a highly skilled person, and knows Ohio insurance law and regulations, which made everything smoother. He stated that he never want us to worry about a roof again, and I have complete confidence that this time the job has been done right. Thanks Jason!

We bought this house in June and it pretty much needed a full rehab in order to move in. My wife and I met with Dennis after calling around for different remodeling companies and he just seemed to stick out from the other companies sales people. Very polite young man who spent over two hours with us going over everything we needed done and at least another 4 or 5 hours with us getting everything picked out and planned. Platinum beat other companies prices by over $2,000 and now, just two months later, we practically have a brand new home! Roofing, siding, most of the windows and at least half the inside of the house was completely remodeled. We are definitely customers for life! Highly recommended

I had a roof leak that they responded to very quickly. This led to them putting on a whole new roof! They didn’t charge me for repairs at all, did an amazing job, and did the roof in one day! They cleaned up well after and they were very professional. They’re a great company to work with, and they made the stressful process very easy for me!!! My roof looks great and I would definitely recommend them to anybody!

Dennis and his team were beyond professional and efficient with the job at hand. Though a huge part of the work they did was roofing, it was no easy task as they were salvaging what was left of my family's home after a somewhat devastating fire. After dealing with such a family tragedy and the emotional turmoil that goes along with losing so many things a family acquires over time, and losing a sense of security you lose when dealing with such an incident, the last thing you want to deal with is contractors and workmen who don't respect your loss and your space. Dennis and his team were VERY sympathetic to what we were going through as a family. Thy worked very hard to complete the job in a very efficient way and went above and beyond by actually handling several other repairs that were not a part of the scope of work, without ever saying a word about it, or billing for it...just simply did it, because they knew we needed it done and didn't want us to have to deal with another decision or problem after what we had been through. I HIGHLY recommend this company and their professional and expert services!! Gill Thompson

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
