Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

My husband and I recently hired Mount Up Moving Services for our move and they were great! From the very beginning stages of getting our move scheduled everyone was extremely friendly. From the owner, Lavelle, who got back to me very quickly and was really willing to work with me from Elma who took care of scheduling the movers. During the day of our move, the three man team consisted of Jerry, Anthony and Edwell. They were on time, very professional and extremely friendly. I was very impressed by the care they took with our things, all while moving at a very quick pace. Not to mention they were extremely affordable! While we are not looking to move anytime soon, I will definitely recommend Mount Up Moving Services to anyone looking to hire a moving company. We were very happy with their services provided!

My experience with ASAP Moving and Hauling was good. The movers were efficient and careful with all my belongings. They did a great job getting all of my things from one place to the next. They were able to disassemble and reassemble things that needed to be. The only negative was that they were two hours late. However, I was notified that they were running behind. Jacob also sent one more mover to help with the move so things would get done a littler quicker. Overall, I was very satisfied with my moving experience.

I couldn't be happier with Jeff and his guys! There were 2 movers and a Jeff supervised. These guys showed up on time and really hustled to get things moved. Also, Jeff was working non-stop to prep the items to move...removing bolts and screws, folding up bed frames. Everyone was very polite and friendly. I would definitely use these guys again!

We hired a 3-man team to move us out of our apartment an into our new home and they did a fantastic job! The guys were so nice, professional and courteous. Moving out of our apartment was such a hassle because our apartment building had no freight elevator, only a passenger elevator. The guys still worked so quickly and got everything moved over to the the new house way faster than I anticipated. So pleased with our experience and will definitely use Mount Up Moving again in the future!

If I could give these guys 10 stars I would. They are great. No excuse about it. They showed up when I was needing the most help to move into my apartment last minute. They stayed late and were extremely reasonable. I will be calling them back the next time I have to move.

Westlake (1 bedroom, 2nd floor apt) to Avon (townhouse) Great experience with ASAP Moving and Hauling. They work very quickly and efficiently and were wonderful with making sure the furniture was moved without any damage. They're very careful with sentimental pieces of furniture too. The price is affordable, the guys were on time and friendly, and the two hour minimum worked out great because they're mindful of the time. Overall an excellent experience and we'll be hiring them again in the next few months for part 2 of our move. Absolutely no complaints!

Derrick & his partner moved me today from a 2 bedroom apartment to a multilevel condo. Along the way there were stops to deliver furniture to family— super hot day, mildly confusing, and big furniture. They were timely, professional, and the quality of work with my furniture was very good. No damage to my furniture or homes. The women who I spoke with to set up my move made that part very easy, they were sweet and professional.

As promised, 2 men and a supervisor showed up at exactly 10am. They loaded up the truck, drove to our house, and didn't damage anything, which is really all we wanted from our movers. And you definitely can't beat their price for the quality! From that standpoint, they deserve 5 stars! However, the reason they are only 4 stars is because, due to what must have been a miscommunication, our 2 bedroom townhome was more than they were expecting for the job, and everything did not fit into the truck. We were told they only do studio or 1 bedrooms, even though we specified on Thumbtack that we were moving out of a 2 bedroom place. Two of the men made it clear they were unhappy about it at first (the one man, I unfortunately forget his name, was extremely nice and professional the whole time), they eventually apologized for their initial reaction, got the job done in 2 trips (we were thankfully only moving 3 miles away), and were friendly the rest of the time. One of the men complained quite a bit and made sure we knew he was unhappy, but the attitude of the other 2 men, and the quality of their work, made up for him. I would definitely recommend them to anyone moving out of a 1 bedroom.

Words cannot describe how grateful we are for Martin! We ran into some trouble with moving into our new apartment and he with his assistant (sorry, hon, I forgot your name) were able to come by within a couple hours of first requesting help here on Thumbtack and help us move the more heavier pieces. To say the least, those guys were a lifesaver. He also had very reasonable rates, but we had no problem paying extra simply because it was a miracle to be able to find great help for such short notice. You will be very pleased with this gentleman's work. God bless you, Martin!!

I hired C.P.H. to move all the furniture from my home and load into a pod that was in my driveway. The men from C.P.H. were hard workers but they had no idea how to efficiently or carefully load the pod, and they did a lot of damage to my freshly professionally painted main door, put a huge dent and several scrapes in my newly painted basement wall, ripped the base of my Arhaus couch and gouged several other pieces of furniture. When I told the owner I was informed the items “were heavy and I had some tight corners,” and “I should have been supervising their work to load the pod properly.” This was my first major move and was why I hired “professionals.” I do not fault the workers in their work ethic but they had to remove and reload some of the pod. After 3 hours I knew they could not do what needed to be done, and said we are done. It was after 8 pm, I needed to feed my kids and I was paying them by the hour to do something I knew now needed to be redone. The next day I had to rent a uhaul, hire college to move the remaining items, and then to take the items out of the pod and Reload properly. This cost me an additional $600 which would have not been necessary if the job was done right the first time. As a single mom with 3 kids, moving for the first time, this was a complete nightmare. The owner was rude and then stated the men saw a bug on my basement couch which was “likely a bedbug,” this was a completely clean space, my home was inspected and professionally painted and cleaned prior to selling...what an unprofessional response to my complaint and nothing more. No refunding my money, no offering to fix or pay for the damage. My door needed to be repainted prior to transfer of ownership. To remove junk, these guys would be great. To remove your nice or expensive items or be treated professionally by the owner, choose someone else.

My experience with CPH was great! I needed a dining room table and chairs (as well as a leaf) moved from a neighbor to my unit. Mike and Dee were prompt. The table had to be removed from the pedestal in order to have it fit through the doors. It was done with no issues. Mike asked me if there's anything else that I needed, making sure that the table was clean and presentable. Both were professional and careful with the property. Not only will I use you guys again, I will definitely recommend you guys to my friends. It was a wonderful experience! Thank you!

Not bad. Two of the three guys knew what they were doing and worked hard. No damage and fairly careful. A bit hectic since at the last minute they made me empty all our drawers and ended up with a room full of garbage bags. And the one guy didn't pay and attention to the room labels and dumped everything in any location. Finally price quoted did not allow e of these time and we end up paying an extra $150. I am saying you get what you pay for. Next move we will hire real professionals who take care of everything and don't make me do extra work or complain the whole time about the workload. We didn't even have that much.
