Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

16 moves in 20 years and this was by far the best moving experience I’ve had. Long story short - I will be hiring Kye and Thunder Moving again as well as recommending them to family and friends!

After submitting my inventory, my order was confirmed for 4 movers to load & unload a 2800sqft home on 7/30/19. 2 movers arrived to load; a man & a woman! I called Bellhop & reached out via Thumbtack msg. They told me they were only able to provide 3 movers to load. I told them my email confirmations showed 4. I went around & around with their stellar (extremely sarcastic) customer svc. They accepted a 4 mover load, even though they didn't have 4 movers available, on they day I requested. Not only did I not get the amount of movers we needed, only 2 arrived on time. The movers had no dollies or moving assistant equipment! I guess they were planning on using pure back strength to move washer & dryers & a 2800sqft home?!? The got tired & helped themselves to one of the uhauls dollies...we had to pay for it..For the first hour & 45 minutes, we had 2 movers, so we ended up having to call in friends to help load one of the two 26ft Uhauls. The 3rd mover showed up an hour & 45 minutes late. Bellhop was unhelpful & kept saying they don't know what happened. I was told I'd receive a call back ..they never called. Now we're really in a bind, because we hired them to unload us also. We were closing on our old home, at 8am the next day & closing on our new home hours later. Bellhop was unreliable, so we had to pay another moving company; in case Bellhop movers decided not to show up. 4 movers did arrive on time for the unload from Bellhop. The other moving company, Best Man Movers, was scheduled to arrive 1 hour after Bellhop with 4 movers..they did. They finished their truck at the same time Bellhops movers did! Bellhops lead, Lori, took a TON of breaks & shouldn't have been considered the 4th mover. All in all, if I could rate Bellhops a zero, I would. Beware of this company, if you have time restraints & expect the movers to arrive on time, with the correct # of movers & with equipment to do the job safely & efficiently.

Mover was 8 hours late arriving to move four items of furniture. The mover called once to notify us that he would be late and would arrive at 4 pm instead of 1 pm...they arrived at 9 pm. A small scratch was found on one piece of furniture that wasn't there previously. Would not use them again.

Moving Services Because of bad weather they had to postpone the move by 2 days. They did a good job. The owner came back after 2 days to fix minor repair in the couch.

I had a evening move scheduled from a third floor apartment. I had some very heavy items including an adjustable bed frame, washer and dryer, as well as some heavy dressers and consoles. We started our move at 6 in the evening and even after a whole day of moving, they were very professional and had a great attitude. They were held up at a previous job and contacted me to let me know of the time change. They were very quick and efficient. I even had a console table that shifted in the move and they re-assembled the piece once it was unloaded. I would highly recommend them for your moving needs!

Serenity Movers just moved a truck full of heavy furniture from Edmond, OK to Coalgate, OK yesterday, for us. I couldn't be more satisfied with their services. They arrived promptly and stayed until the job was complete. Everything arrived without any scratches, and their strength in moving heavy objects amazed me. I would highly recommend their services.

We had to quickly move from OKC to Texas for work and Levon and his team made that move very easy for us. From start to finish I couldn't have been happier making the choice to go with them for a big move. We hired Levon after searching the bigger companies and found his prices to be better and he was definitely more accommodating then any other company we spoke with. The day of the move they were very professional and efficient and had all of our stuff from the third story apartment wrapped and into the van in an hour and a half. Even though we arrived in Texas late that night Levon and Dan took the time to help us setup anything we needed help with. I would definitely hire them again for any move I make. You'll be very happy with their services.

Patrick, Donte and Terrell were very professional, worked extremely hard to make sure everything was carefully packed in the trailer. They also were so careful not to mark up walls as they carried furniture in and out. They asked questions when they needed to. We enjoyed having them move us. I would highly recommend them and Dixie Land Movers.

This is a low life thug who came to harass me at my place of business and my home. After they damaged my property, I felt as if I shouldn't have to pay the full price of the move in. We agreed upon a discounted price for the move, but I told him that it would take a couple of days to get him my card info due to my hectic schedule. That didn't work for him and he caused a scene at my office. Do yourself a favor and don't do business with this low life. There are more reputable moving companies in the metro.

Dan's moving company, very affordable, very friendly men. They also moved things over a landing into a loft instead of the spiral staircase. Very smart. Also, offered to hook up our w/d and bed frame. The only thing, if they get a bigger truck they could cut a lot of time. I would use them again. Word to the wise, bubble wrap and pad your furniture!
