We needed a faucet installed in a really tight area. Ricky was quick with a reasonable quote and able to do the install the next day. He arrived on time and was very professional. Ricky also made sure the area was cleaned before he left and did things above and beyond, like fill the soap container attached to the faucet! We are going to call him next time we need any home services and refer him to our neighbors. Ricky is also very personable and just a really nice guy.

They were amazing! Lucy and Fred responded immediately! We woke up Saturday morning at 7 am and realized we had no hot water. Contacted LF Plumbing by 8am and they arrived by 8:30-8:45am, and told us we needed a new water heater with one look. They went to Home Depot and picked out a reasonable water heater, which my husband paid for. They charged us for installation and were in and out by 10:30am. Mind you, this was a holiday weekend, and there was no run around nor extra holiday fees. I can't say enough good things about them. If you want your problem handled fast and reasonably, don't hesitate to call Lucy and Fred!

Todd did a great job while assisting with my complete home renovation. He takes great pride in his work and gives it his all. I leaned on Todd several times for recommendations on some tasks while he was willing to take direction when I was firm on how I wanted something done. I had some serious drywall issues in several rooms that Todd cleaned up, installed cabinet hardware, installed stair handrail/pickets, exterior door, bathroom hardware, and mini blinds. On the handrail, Todd fabricated a steel insert that mounted to concrete to secure post. I will be using Todd in the future if something should be needed.

Our home was flooded with water and the damage was tremendous. It happened from a pipe blowing off its cap from a very poor plumber's work who forgot to cinch the sleeve against the cap and stem in our upstairs bathroom wall's water pipe. We were lucky one of us was home to turn off the major water valve in the house. Kaphar came out immediately at an extremely late hour as soon as they heard about our incident. They came the same night it happened and were at our house within 20 minutes. They found the problem in the wall in about 5 minutes! The Kaphar professional that came that night was Chase Holmes. From that point forward our home was in great hands with the owner Charles, Chase and many wonderful team members doing quick demolition and water mitigation with sophisticated moisture review and analysis until everything was dry and ready for repair. The damage was extensive from several upstairs rooms to major portions of the downstairs. We even had structural issues caused from water soaking an area upstairs which made the heavily weighed section of our home sag down about 6 to 8 inches! The whole section had to be torn down and rebuilt. It's perfect! The repairs are impeccable, the team members experts in their field of construction work and all of them were very polite, considerate and professional. Kaphar was quick to take care of our home, and they also made sure to contact us and visit our home at least once a day if not two or more times a day. Their communication was clear, next steps were explained and planned WITH US throughout the whole process and the ATTENTION TO DETAIL made our home look brand new - it's 1,000 times better than when we bought it new! And the best part is they SHOWED UP WHEN they said they would, did EXACTLY what they said they would, worked above and beyond taking EXTRA STEPS to fix what needed to be fixed including correcting a different contractors poor workmanship from repairs made when our home was damaged from the 2013 tornado. They hauled off the damaged, unused materials, cleaned up everyday, and hired a professional cleaner several times throughout the process to keep our home clean and tidy while under construction. They worked with our insurance company on our behalf ensuring that all parties were treated FAIRLY AND EQUITABLY and satisfactorily. It was very comforting to have Kaphar by our side during this disaster. They gave us advice, offered options and kept us informed, and all along the way they educated us about what they were doing and why they were doing it. They provided an exceptional customer service experience, gave us quick responses to our questions or concerns, included us in decisions in every step and we TRUSTED them implicitly. We cannot express our GRATITUDE enough. We had someone care for our home, treating it as if it was their own in Kaphar. We highly recommend Kaphar, they are a very dependable and reputable firm. Their work is superior to ANY other contractor we have worked with - and unfortunately for us we've needed major repairs much too often. No one else will EVER touch our home again, Kaphar has us as life-long customers! Trust us, when you need help fixing your property after a major incident call Kaphar. You will be ecstatic about their service and so pleased with the exquisite end results from their work. We are expressing our gratefulness for them and giving them the highest praise and scores possible. We would give them 10 stars if that was an option. We hope you never have a disaster like this in your home but if you do choose to hire Kaphar. We are so happy! Kaphar is a top-notch company.

When the project hit a snag at the tail end he was more than reasonable in working with us on a solution. We appreciated the thoroughness and professionalism. We will definitely use them for future home improvement projects!

We needed ceramic tile in each bedroom and also backsplash in the kitchen. And we received several bids and although all of them guaranteed their service. It was LDN who we went with due to David's attention to detail in explaining each step by step process. And although we had changes, his motto was " the customer is always right". Me and my wife are very happy with his expertise and his attitude towards us as a customer. We also hope to use him again in the future with projects we have to do on our house.

I hired Mr. Rankin to replace all of the siding and wood trim on two dormer windows. He responded to all of my questions and came by my home to look at the project and bid the job. He began the work on time and finished on time. In addition to his professionalism and skills, he is just a very likable fella. His work quality is very good and his pricing is more than fair! I’m very happy with how the job turned out, and I would not hesitate to hire him again for any future jobs! Thank you, Mr. Rankin!

Kevin and his crew went out of their way to make the project seem less, professional and easy. I was concerned at first because my wife works from home and would be at the house during the entire project but Kevin and his crew went out of their way to ensure they didn't get in her way. Also they were on a very condensed timeline because we had an open house coming up and they worked 12+ hour days to make sure they got the job done. Also the quality of work was top notch, they didn't skimp on anything. I highly recommend him. Thanks, Adam Tebbs

Kris with Klutch Painting is exactly what I needed when I found myself in a position where we trusted the wrong contractor. We were so stressed and our lives where turned upside down at the time . A friend referred us to Klutch! And with in a few days we finally felt a weight being lifted! She resurfaced / epoxied our countertops and gave us our home back in a very reasonable time frame! We will be using Klutch on any future projects and others would be wise to do the same!

When a burst pipe created a flood that destroyed the wood flooring in a portion of our home, we cringed at the idea of finding a contractor who would treat the repairs as if it were HIS home. We found that with Mike Boyer. Not only was Mike and his crew technically proficient to make the necessary repairs, but thankfully Mike is prompt about returning calls. Communication is a key component of dealing with a reconstruction project....and I couldn't have been more satisfied with Mike's professional skills and concern for his customer. Highly Recommended!

I have had a very positive experience with Jimmy's wonderful construction work. He replaced a small side garage door for me years ago that was in bad shape and now it looks 100 times better. He also repaired a large hole in a bedroom wall left by some plumbing work and you could not even tell that a hole had ever been there. It looked better than new. I would have to call his work outstanding and of wonderful quality and he gives fair prices for the hard and professional work he does. I plan to use him for all future work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
