I have been taking electric guitar lessons for a 18 months and Samantha is an excellent teacher for players from any level. She has a depth of technical knowledge, different styles of playing and most importantly, she makes it fun and interesting. It is rare to find a skilled guitar player who is also a skilled teacher, and Samantha is both.

Patient, intelligent, talented… Those are just three of the qualities that Maxime displays as a guitar teacher. I started taking guitar lessons from him last year and to be honest, at first I was somewhat concerned about taking music lessons over the Internet. But it’s worked out quite well. And although I am a beginning guitar player, I’m not an inexperienced music student. After undergraduate studies in music. I went to Juilliard on scholarship before going on to perform all over the world. Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, recording contract with Sony. Recorded at Abbey Rd. Studios with the London Philharmonic, PBS radio and TV performances with leading orchestras and opera companies and along the way more voice lessons than I can remember…. 😬 so if there’s one thing I’ve done a lot of it’s take private music lessons. From a lot of people. Some good, some bad, and some great. And I have no qualms about recommending Max to either a beginning or advanced guitar student. He does a great job and is very organized in his teaching. So if you’re thinking of taking lessons give him a try. I think you’ll be very happy. Did I mention that is also a really nice guy…? 😎 Les young

I started taking his piano lessons only about a month ago, but it''s been such a great joy to work with him. He constantly assesses my weaknesses and strengths, and plans my lessons accordingly. He also listens carefully to what I like and what I want to do, too. I live a bit far from his studio, but it's totally worth it. I highly recommend him!

I am a 75 y/o individual with very limited musical skills and arthritis in my left hand. Who would take on such a challenging project.....Tim Bischof. Very patient, very knowledgeable, very skilled guitarist. I was having difficulty with the classical guitar when Tim put me in touch with Hawaiian slack key tuning which has re-energized my approach to learning the guitar. I can recommend Tim enthusiastically.

Would highly recommend. Cameron makes it enjoyable for my 5 year old and teaches in a way that keeps him engaged and willing to learn. The program is fun for my son and I even hear him singing the songs from piano lesson while he's playing with his toys. As a working parent, I also appreciate that Cameron is flexible when our schedule needs to change.

Helen, was AMAZING, she taught my 6 yr daughter her first piano lesson. We were going to try out a few different teachers, but after meeting her, I have no interest going anywhere else. Thank you for being so friendly and so talented! <3 A few things that were important to me were, 1. She could connect with my 6 year old. 2. That she could teach syllabus. 3. That she has opportunities for her students to perform during the year. She met all three of those. :)

My 10 year old son has been very interested in getting guitar lessons for about a year now, so I finally decided to do some research to find the best music school in the area. I asked some of his classmates for recommendations, and a few mentioned taking their children for lessons a Northwest School of Music, an that they really liked the instructors there. I read some reviews and went to visit one afternoon before my son got out of school. I spoke with Manny Martinez, the instructor who does the guitar lessons, and I could tell that he loves what he does. He has lots of experience and fantastic credentials and just seemed like a great teacher to learn from. My son has been going to him since January now. My son has been having a great time and has a real enthusiasm for it. Manny has done a great job in helping him to advance and develop his skills, and my son has been keeping up his end of the bargain (practice!) due in part to his instructors focus on making it really enjoyable. It's great to see my son devoting time to practicing because he loves impressing his instructor with his progress. Overall, I'm very happy I chose to sign my son up for lessons at the Northwest School of Music. The staff are fantastic, and they really motivate and encourage students. My daughter is interested in learning guitar as well now that her brother is having so much fun with it, and I'll be signing her up in the fall. The lessons are priced well, and the quality of instruction my child receives is worth every penny.

The amount of time and effort Austin dedicates to his music is truly inspiring! Just watching him talk and teach others about the guitar is amazing. He’s patience and truly enjoys explaining the different techniques and notes. Regardless of the amount of experience you have with guitar, I can bet after working with him you’ll have a greater appreciation for music in general!

I originally went to Ky for harmonica lessons in Flagstaff after playing around with the instrument by myself for a couple of years. I wanted to learn how to play music with others. Ky tailored my lessons to me and taught me the basics. He played guitar along with me so I could get used to playing with people. Soon after, I picked up guitar and decided to see him for that as well. He was a great instructor for guitar too! Even for a complete beginner like me. He was very patient and helped me pick songs to master and skills to work on in areas where I needed improvement. Most of all, the lessons were fun and not frustrating! I walked out of each lesson feeling challenged, but accomplished and excited by the music we played. Ky is a very talented musician, teacher, and just a really cool, down to earth guy. Check him out!

I've been with Tamara for the past 11 years and I've had such an amazing musical experience. Starting with piano and then extending my class time to fit in guitar and ukelele lessons, she's one of the most talented and versatile musicians I know. In addition, class times were flexible. The teaching environment was always very comfortable and supportive. Allowing her students to play what they were interested in and giving them a chance to explore different genres of music really enhanced my understanding and interest for music.

Her lesson plans are designed to be motivating and enjoyable for me while also moving me steadily forward in becoming a better musician. I love her enthusiasm! I believe she truly enjoys teaching.

Picking the right teacher is a critical step in your development as a guitar player no matter what level you’re at. I’ve had several teachers over the years, some more helpful than others. Here are some reasons why Erick Hailstone is the right guitar teacher for me. • The biggest value-add for me is Erick’s ability to arrange a song, any song, from standard boring arrangement out of a book to a unbelievably cool song with a Jazz or Blues twist with alt-chords throughout. No other teach I’ve encountered in the Portland Metro area does this. And he’s fast at it. He uses great tools in the process, so we can share files and collaborate. The alt-chords are seriously a differentiator how a song sounds and come with a bit of a wow factor. • Erick has the ability to take any complex problem and break it down into smaller issues to work on. He completely gets it when it comes to figuring out “okay, I’m at this level of playing but I’d like to get over here.” He’s got the roadmap to take me there. • As a player, Erick has every single characteristic that I’ve dreamt of having since I was a kid. Great tone/sound. Flawless playing. Shreds when the song calls for it. Steely Dan to Wes Montgomery and everything in between. He makes it look so easy. From the first time I saw him play 20 years ago until today I walk away shaking my head thinking how I’d love to play like that. It’s absolutely incredible. • Some of my most valuable takeaways have been nuggets of advice that have nothing to do with guitar technique. I can’t stress how meaningful this has been at times. Things like “Rule #1 for a guitar player: Never get in the way of the singer.” • Studying with Erick has helped me build up a rich library of exercises to practice with. Arpeggios, Scales, and licks. Right hand technique (which is much more important and much more difficult than I ever imagined), tasty chords and of course, songs. • Erick truly understands the theory behind every bar in a song and can articulate what is going on there. His understanding of music theory is vast. • One of the things I’m into is recording and often times my lessons are around problem solving with the recording process. My recordings have improved dramatically since I started collaborating with Erick on them. By my own choice, I’ve spent entire lessons just learning the ins and outs of some of the tools like Pro Logic. I can’t tell you how much time this has save me from fishing around on you-tube. • Lastly, we’ve been collaborating remotely via a program called zoom so I never even leave the house. This has a huge convenience factor and saves a bunch of commute time. It works pretty well to use zoom plus I have the added benefit of being able to record the sessions and review them later on. As I said earlier, picking the right teacher is a fork in the road critical decision to your development. I’ve had no regrets and am seriously loving the results. Bill Toner Tualatin, OR

About

I am a classically trained guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. I offer music lessons to the general public at competitive rates. I combine the best aspects of a classical training, including music theory, sight-reading and aural skills with the sensibility of a self-taught musician, stressing the importance to learn to play by ear and improvise in jams. With my extensive background in musical styles ranging from classical to jazz, rock and folk, I have the knowledge to help you take your playing to the next level. I am easygoing and fun to work with, and lessons will be catered to each individual.

About

I take a step-by-step approach to teach students music as seen through the lens of the guitar, and I provide a well-rounded education for the beginner to thrive, whether playing solo or performance pieces or playing for a church or a band. Several quick facts about me are as follows: * I am almost 30 with 15 years of experience playing the guitar. * I love teaching kids and inspiring passion in them to master an instrument. * I can read music, chords, tabs, and teach rhythm and picking.

About

I'm Doc Fleetwood, and I teach guitar, music theory, jazz, and music concepts and philosophy. I focus on my specialty: fingerstyle jazz, covering blues, and folk with some instruction in country, bluegrass, classical, pop, and rock guitar. I also teach skills and concepts of leading church and small group worship with guitar, and of playing as a member of a worship team. My Teaching Background: It's been my privilege to teach countless students for over 38 years. I am the senior guitar teacher at Uptown Music in Keizer, Oregon, having enjoyed a teaching relationship with the store for more than 20 years. A number of the current and past guitar teachers at Uptown Music were originally my students who have gone on to become excellent teachers themselves. With the obligatory introductory lessons, exposure, and apprenticeship to colleagues in various ensembles, 40 years playing, and 35 years of teaching experience, a tremendous amount of self-instruction and research, I offer a vast perspective of playing and performing experiences to share with my students. Performance Background: I have played in various ensembles and solo endeavors for over 40 years. I currently play in the unique violin, guitar, and trumpet jazz trio "Kilde, Fleetwood, and La Freniere" in the vocal and guitar duo BJAZZ, and various solo and sideman engagements. My Teaching Philosophy: I practice what I call "prescriptive teaching". The purpose is to determine your interests, background and learning style and build lessons that provide you with the tools and guidance to become the musician you want to be. I constantly remind my students that I can't magically turn someone into a guitarist in half to 1 hour a week, but I do provide the tools and guidance for them to turn themselves into the musician they are destined to be. I love introducing youngsters to the joy of making music and helping adults realize that lifelong dream of making music. Testimony: "Being a music teacher myself, I have really appreciated what Doc Fleetwood has to offer. He's a teacher of teachers and highly skilled on the guitar. I have learned so much from him the last 3 years. He never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge and expertise and goes out of his way to help his students. You can tell that he loves to teach and it has been fun playing some of his arrangements and original compositions. I have also enjoyed watching and listening to him as he plays in a professional Jazz Trio. (They have produced several excellent CD recordings). I am happy and honored to recommend Doc Fleetwood." - Darrell Robertson, Piano and Guitar Teacher, Guitar Instructor at Chemeketa Community College "I have been meeting with Doc Fleetwood for about six years now. I have enjoyed every moment of his instruction on the guitar. Doc uses a unique approach to teaching, in which he makes complex ideas easy to grasp. As result of this type of teaching, music theory has become simple and easy for me to apply to my music. I believe that music theory is of no use if it becomes a distant entity to playing music. Music theory should serve as a tool to take an individual’s creativity to another level. I have truly seen this take place over the years under the instruction of Doc Fleetwood. I have greatly enjoyed my time with Doc and would recommend his teaching approach to anyone who wishes to take their guitar playing further. As a result of his instruction and encouragement, I myself am now teaching and seeing others expand in their musical potential." - Ben Schott, Music Pastor, Champion Life Center, Keizer, OR ; Guitar Teacher, Uptown Music, Keizer, OR "I’ve been playing guitar for a long time, but recently, I had begun to feel that I hadn’t challenged myself to grow at it in years. Doc Fleetwood’s strengths as a teacher mesh beautifully with what I am looking for and need as a student. He’s a great listener and took the time to find out what I can already do well, using that as a resource upon which we can build. Deeply knowledgeable about music and music theory, he’s also very patient with me as I step out into uncharted territory. A great teacher makes a world of difference when learning a new skill. Doc has the chops as both a master teacher and musician to help students of all levels rise to the challenges they’ve set for themselves. I would recommend him without hesitation." - Loren Depping, guitar student, member of “Oregon Valley Boys” western swing band Rates and Availability: I teach from my primary studio in Keizer, OR, serving students from Portland to Corvallis, and I provide occasional consultations in the Portland area. I also now offer live online sessions using the Skype webcam technology for students who may live too far distant to travel for weekly lessons. I teach from beginning to advanced, and I also offer consultations for advanced students and professional musicians desiring to hone their skills and supplement their knowledge, particularly in the areas of fingerstyle technique and music/jazz theory.
