Hello! I've been teaching guitar since 2002 to a wide range of students, varying in age, level, and stylistic interests. Young or old, beginner or advanced, my goal as a teacher is to help the student acquire the skills necessary to become creative with music and to have fun doing so. I have a Bachelor of Music degree from North Carolina School of the Arts in classical guitar performance. In addition to teaching in North Carolina and California, I spent 2 years working at the St. Lucia School of Music in the South Caribbean, where I taught music theory and ensembles as well as private lessons. My performance and collaborative endeavors have included jazz, electronic rock, solo classical guitar, reggae, folk, old-time swing, performance installation, and accompaniment of modern dance. I try to draw from my own musical background of diversity and strong fundamentals to help my students accomplish their individual goals. I am currently offering lessons at the Music Studios on Harrison Hill in SE Portland. My fees are $50/60 mins, $40/45 mins, and $30/30 mins. I would be happy to answer any questions you have. I am a Portland based guitar instructor. My teaching career began in NY, where I am originally from. I have had students from ages 6-60. I specialize in classical guitar, but I have plenty of experience in teaching and performing various styles, including rock, jazz, and folk. I believe that a good technique is essential, and an understanding of music theory is essential. However, these things are only one side of the coin. In addition to teaching you what to practice, I will teach you how to practice and how it ties in to what you love.(show more)

Hello, I profess lessons for guitar as a classical instrument. If interested, we will approach through technique and etudes while applying them to repertoire. This approach helps the player develop the skills that it takes to play with virtuosic ease, avoiding tension in the hand. I teach students of all ages and levels of progress. A large part of playing guitar is to expose yourself to the community and to other guitarists through chamber music. If you wish to explore these areas of music, I can help you succeed. I, Francisco Armenta, have studied at SFCM and PSU, and am currently studying in my undergraduate. I've taught at OCHSA, a famous high school of the arts, and I've also held many private students. Some of the materials you will need: - A classical guitar (nylon strings) - Pumping Nylon by Scott Tennant - A foot stool or an A-Frame of some sort - Files to shape the nails - A metronome/tuner Sincerely, Francisco Armenta(show more)

This instrument changed my life, but I wrestled with it for a long time, or rather, with my idea of where I "should be" with it. Imagine the fun we'd have without the "shoulds", the milestones we'd make! I'd like to give kids of all ages an opportunity to see it that way, with a little guidance to reassure you that it's okay to have fun and explore; hit as many wrong notes as you like just to feel the weight of it in your hands, and hear the sounds it makes, good, bad and ugly. In fact, it's the only way. Just because there's a million players out there doesn't mean you have to do it like they do. Do it like you do, and enjoy the process. Cheers.(show more)

Whether a student is 5 years old or 80, I believe everyone can benefit greatly from learning the fundamentals of music, coupled with even the most elementary music theory concepts. If you are a new student, the first thing you may want to ask yourself is whether you have a specific goal. Do you want to learn rock, jazz, classical, or blues, or all of them? We can do that! Do you want to learn to read music? Or, is tablature notation enough for your needs? We can do either or both. Are you interested in writing your own music and learning how different styles of music are constructed using music theory? We can do that too. It all depends on where you want to go as a musician. For more advanced students, we may work on anything from altered chords and jazz solos to advanced rock techniques (sweep arpeggios, exotic scales, etc.) and odd time signatures or advanced theory. For beginning students, I like to concentrate on technique during the first few lessons in order to develop good habits. This includes posture (how to properly sit and hold guitar), left-hand technique (how to best place fingers for chording as well as single notes), and right-hand technique (how to hold the pick and perform picking patterns). The student's technique will be honed through various picking exercises as well as basic chord progressions, scales, and songs. Of course, during this time, we will work together to find the best path to meet your music goals!(show more)

At MusikHaus, we offer music lessons to beginners and advanced students of ukulele, guitar, Hawaiian steel guitar, piano, and voice. Reach your musical potential at MusikHaus! Chris Gabriel, MusikHaus' director and lead teacher, was born in Germany and while growing up in a military family that moved often, Chris discovered a strong foundation in the guitar. His love for the Hawaiian and country music are reflections of his summer visits to his grandparents in Hawaii and Bakersfield, California. Ever since Chris received a Bachelors degree in Music in Jazz from Portland State University, it has been his dream to open a space where he could use his unique experiences and abilities to help carry on these traditions. Stephanie Hays Gabriel, co-founder and administrative director or Musikhaus, has a background in business and arts planning. She has curated musical events such as an annual Jazz series featuring local Jazz artists as well as volunteered as a board member for a local nonprofit, PDX Pop Now!, for several years. It has long been Stephanie's dream to bring her talents to the local community, bringing more musical events and creating more spaces for people to gather and share experiences. Chris and Stephanie's shared experiences over 20 years have made Musikhaus the natural next step. They met in a performing arts class while at Hilo High School in Hawaii. After returning to Portland to complete school, they moved to Germany for two years and were very active in the musical Zeitgeist. After returning to Portland, they began writing, performing and recording in the band Super Zeitgeist, which released a children's CD in 2009. We look forward to welcoming you to Musikhaus and sharing music and community with your families! "Music is the magic wand that drives away care and worries." -anonymous "Hawaiian music lifts the latch of care, and makes the spirit free as passing air, and brings the light of light more near, more clear." -Peggy Reid "Music is the soul what exercise is to the body." -anonymous "Gently, as on the wings of a dove, Music, a gift of infinite Love, Wafts us to a happy land, Where love and peace command." -A.M. What do you love about your job?
I enjoy helping people more thoroughly enjoy their lives. There are many people who appreciate my understanding of finger-style guitar artistry, and they support my efforts at communicating it. For these people, I am grateful. Music is good for the soul and the brain. Through music - both teaching and performing - I am helping people live healthier and happier lives.
Who inspired you to start your own business?
Young Audiences' National Artist of the Year (2009) Greta Pedersen, who has supported my efforts from the beginning, and Fred Cummins, musical partner in college and first professional performance partner, inspired me. Two major music publishing companies, each of which rejected my first book manuscript, forced Greta and me to start Accent On Music LLC and self-publish. That first manuscript, Art of Contemporary Travis Picking, has been a best seller for 30 years, and it continues to add rave reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. We have since published over two dozen of my titles. These independent efforts led to a Grammy Award in 2005 for my contributions to Solid Air Records' "Henry Mancini-Pink Guitar" CD.
