Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have someone hang your Christmas lights?

It will likely cost between $200 and $400 to hire someone to hang your Christmas lights and holiday decorations. For an accurate cost estimate, ask installers near you to give you a price quote. Let them know if you need them to supply the lights, how many you want to hang and other details about this project.

When should you hang Christmas lights?

There’s no set rule of when you should or shouldn’t hang your Christmas lights. Some homeowners wait until after Halloween or Thanksgiving. Others may choose to hang them a few weeks before Christmas or at the beginning of December.

What do you use to hang Christmas lights outside?

If you want to hang up Christmas lights (or other holiday light fixtures) outdoors, you’ll need the following:

  • Christmas and holiday lights
  • Extension cords
  • Gloves
  • Gutter clips
  • Ladder
  • Power stakes
  • Tape measure

Instead of hanging the Christmas lights yourself, you can hire a professional installer to take care of this project for you.

What is the best way to hang Christmas lights on your house?

The best way to hang Christmas lights on your house is to use some type of light clip (sometimes called gutter clips). To help ensure your safety, however, consider hiring a professional installer who has experience with hanging Christmas lights, handling electrical cords and using ladders.

How many feet of Christmas lights do you need for a house?

You’ll need to measure your house to figure out how many Christmas lights you need. Some homeowners may want to start with 60 feet of lights — or 200 feet. You can take the guesswork out of it by hiring a professional installer or handy person to help you measure and install your lights.

How much do I tip Christmas light installers?

How much you tip an installer who hangs your Christmas and holiday lighting is up to your discretion. Some people prefer to tip about 20% for services, while others may choose to tip anywhere from $20-$50. It’s up to you how much you choose to tip.

I highly recommend J and E Shine. They installed our holiday lights this year and we were very impressed. They were professional and prompt, measures and placed the lights with care. When we noticed one light out they came quickly to replace it free of charge.

It was great working with Peter! He was prompt with his responses leading up to the job. He installed Christmas lights on our house and they look great and we are ready for the holidays! He even executed a last-minute idea we had to frame out a window with the lights. Peter was friendly, communicative, professional, and got the job done quickly. Looking forward to seeing him again when he takes down the lights.

We received multiple bids for gutter cleaning and Christmas light installation, and chose CWAGS, LLC and Josh Burt. They weren't the cheapest. They were the most responsive - initially. Ironically, I hired them for what I thought was their refreshing professionalism. CWAGS installed the lights but "forgot" to clean the gutters. Literally put lights on leave filled gutters. So, Josh promised to come out two days later to complete the job. Didn't show. I called him again and he promised to come out the next day. Didn't show. This happened literally FIVE times. Promise & no-show. They never called, never re-scheduled. Every time I had to follow up and every time Josh made an excuse and every time Josh promised to deliver the next day. He never did. SO UNPROFESSIONAL. Leaves are backed up in the gutter, in some places leaves cover the Christmas lights (not the crisp clean holiday look you pay hundreds for) and leaves are causing rain water to overflow around the house, including above the front door on Thanksgiving! Josh continually lied to me. Took my money without delivering as contracted. This has been going on for weeks and I haven't written a review because I really wanted this to all work out. However, Josh stopped responding altogether so I've given up. My review: Quality is terrible. Timeliness is terrible. Professionalism is terrible. DON'T TRUST CWAGS or JOSH. Save yourself the headache and the rip-off.
