In 2004 I was referred to Tom from a friend who got tired of helping me with my math homework. If it wasn't for Tom I wouldn't have passed High School Calculus. He helped me gain a solid foundation in Math, and his passion for the Science was one of my main inspirations in pursuing a Mathematics degree while in College. I wouldn't have the career (which is heavily math intensive) I have today if I hadn't spent the time I did learning from him. He is an absolute professional, and I've recommended him to friends and family who can attest to his excellent work as a tutor.

Alex has been tutoring my 9th Grade daughter since the beginning of the year. He has complete familiarity with the High School syllabus, and is happy to liaise with her math teacher, I find him always very professional. He has built up a great rapport with her, and she certainly enjoys his relaxed, positive approach.

I am so glad I found Tag Tutoring! My daughter did not feel confident in math and currently is taking Geometry (10th Grade) and it was getting her down. She is an Honor Roll student but math is not her strongest subject. Tag Tutoring is patient and kind. As well as very responsive to schedule. After just the first session, my daughter had a huge smile on her face. She was so grateful for the help she received in the short amount of time. Tag Tutoring explained the math a lot better where my daughtr feels like she is starting to understand more. I can’t wait to continue her sessions and see her exceed and improve her grade.

Ellie was great. She had my 13 year old son engaged the whole time. When she asked if he wanted to continue after an hour and do an hour and a half he was eager to continue. I'm very glad I found her.

Elissa Hare is an excellent tutor. She made my daughter feel welcome, at ease, and capable of accomplishing any task. We visited Elissa primarily for help with math homework and tests; she was always prepared for whatever assignment my daughter was given. If they ran out of math work to do, Elissa would not waste a moment of time. She would have my daughter digging through her backpack for other homework she could help with. Before going to Elissa, we had considered Sylvan or Kumon. Elissa, however, was able to provide more expertise, as well as a one-on-one environment that was far more suited to our needs.

Our tutor is awesome and meets us in person. The company is organized, reasonably priced, and flexible. There's no long-term commitment and we were matched with a tutor who could assist with multiple subjects. Student Circle is outstanding.

About

Most tutoring companies look at a student's grade level, and tutor according to where they should be in that grade. We look at students on an individual basis, seeing what areas they have already mastered, and what basic, foundational skills in which they may have gaps. This allows us to create a plan of progress that is specifically designed for your child-- not just for any kid who happens to be the same age.

About

I’m a certified secondary math teacher and K-12 district math coach. I’m also a former varsity basketball coach. I love working with students of all ages, and I can bring innovative, hands-on or technology-focused math instruction and 1-on-1 or small group tutoring sessions. Every student can learn math, but not every student can learn in the same way. It is my belief that it is the tutor's job to find that way.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
