Judy was wonderful, timely and efficient. This was the first non-family pet sitter we have hired since in Pittsburgh. My dog was happy when we returned and all was well! I am going to refer her to others! Thanks thumbtack!

Lisa has been stopping by my home to walk my pup for about a month now and I could not be more happy with her service. My dog can be difficult, and does not easily trust new faces, but I can tell that she enjoys Lisa's visits just by how calm she is when I get home. Lisa also takes the time to write notes about her visit each day, which really means a lot to me since sometimes my long work hours keep my from my pup longer than I'd like. I would HIGHLY recommend Lisa to anyone looking for a qualified individual to spend time with their animal.

When our dog reached 7 years of age, we used Tracy to stop by, to walk and let our dog out for bathroom breaks, while we were working. Tracy is very caring, trustworthy and reliable. Tracy would stop by when we were home, and our dog would be excited to see her! I wouldn't hesitate to utilize Tracy's services again.

It’s my pleasure to recommend Stephinie Italiano for dog training, walking and sitting. Stephinie has been my dog sitter for the past 3 years. She is honest, dependable, and goes the extra mile to make sure that my dogs are happy. My dogs are both shy and she was able to make both of them feel at ease quickly with her kind and gentle approach. Stephinie is also an excellent dog trainer. She is highly skilled in helping fearful, aggressive dogs become more confident and therefore no longer aggressive. Dogs that used to be afraid to walk out of their home, are able to enjoy walks after she works with them. Dogs that used to bark, growl and lunge at other dogs and people on walks are able to walk past confidently without become aggressive. I highly recommend Stephinie as a Dog Trainer and Dog Sitter/Walker. You and your dogs will love her!

Darlene is a delight to work with. I was at first nervous about leaving my 2 pups. They are bigger dogs and love attention. But after meeting with her and her correspondence while we were away, all worries melted away. The dogs seem to love her her and she's very good with them. Highly recommended.

I’ve learned more at a couple of classes at Splash n Dash than in all the books I have read and 40 years of dog ownership. Agility training and Flyball have changed my dog Dougal from a frustrated and slightly destructive dog into a very happy and well behaved companion and established a special bond between us.

Based on the recommendation of my veterinarian, who knew Dayton, I contracted with him for 6 weeks of training for a 5 month old German Shepherd. He helped me understand the breed and worked with us as the pup learned basic commands. I was so pleased with my progress with the pup that I contracted for 6 more lessons and later recommended him to a friend who had just rescued a 2 year old greyhound. Dayton obviously loves and respects dogs. He has endless patience for the dog and the owner and is able to clearly explain and demonstrate the lesson being taught. He is very generous with his time and knowledge and he guarantees his training. He is prompt to respond to messages and is always available to address training problems or issues that might develop after the class is over.

Melissa is an amazing trainer! She has been helping me train my dog, Boone, in nose work and without her help we wouldn't have made any progress as her hands on lessons made night and day difference. I can see a huge difference in my dogs confidence and in his ability to follow commands. Definitely would recommend V Force training for anyone looking to have fun and excel with creating a better bond with their dog!

About

I treat each pet as if they are my own. When I walk a dog, I take additional time to make sure they get what they need to make them happy. Whether it's sniffing longer in one place, running for a while, or playing in the yard, it's their time, and I want to do all that they need, so their owners have a balanced and happy pet when they come home. Additionally, if I am responsible to give a pet a meal or treats, I only feed them organic foods from USA/Canada.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
