Davis Handyman service did an exceptional job installing hardwood floors on a very difficult concrete surface. He leveled the floor and did other prep work in ensure a good outcome. We love it. He was prompt, courteous, cleaned up at the end of each work day. He went beyond his job by helping my husband with a spiral staircase needed adjusting due to the new floors. We would definitely hire Davis Handyman Service again.

I'd hire JB Weaver again in an instant. It's the best experience I've had in hiring someone for home projects. Had a ceiling installed, several plumbing projects completed, painting, flooring and a variety of other general services. Can't say enough about this company.

I can't say enough about how pleased we were with Dave and his staff. We had contracted with Dave to install hardwood floors in our family and living rooms. Dave was helpful and responsive to my questions the whole time I was shopping around for wood. Once I found the wood I wanted, he made a commitment to have our floors done within the time frame that we had requested, which was a very tight window of time. His installers worked diligently to complete the job and our hardwood was installed and everything back in order within the time frame we requested. During the install, he stopped by and checked in to ensure everything was okay as well as he stopped by after the project was complete. Dave has a great personality and it was easy to work with him. He is honest and reasonably priced as we had interviewed a few other installers and his quote came in about the same or lower than any of the others. While his price was lower, the service and quality of work was top notch! I will defiantly have Dave and his crew back for more home repairs in the future!

It was a real pleasure and a great experience to work with Damian Kraus. I hired him to repair my deck and replace rotted boards. As it turned out, the entire floor had to be replaced because the rotting on some of the boards could not be seen until they were exposed by removed boards. Because of this, the job took longer than originally estimated, but Damian came through with flying colors. Damian kept me up-to-date on what was needed and he worked steadily and consistently until the job was finished (total time = 16 hours). He was courteous, professional and very pleasant to deal with. His workmanship was great and I would not hesitate to hire him again.

I bought a row home built in 1940's, that had hardwood floors that needed refinishing. Three estimates-- one said they couldn't be done because too thin plus insulted the wood on the staircase. The estimate came that night but only for the second floor. The second spent a lot of time talking about their family and never got back to me with the estimate. Envirostar not only went through hoops to accommodate my busy schedule, they also prioritized my job due to the urgency before moving in. The owner kept in constant communication with me from the hospital (where he was an in patient) before starting and personally was on the job for entire process. He kept me up to date on all procedures and concerns. The floors are gorgeous! Staining is even and the varnish was bubble free. The staircase and floors look new. Even the painter was amazed (he was there the day of estimate). They cleaned up afterwards and if I had to recommend any improvements, I would request the screens be removed from Windows so any floor dust would go directly outside. I have to take out and wash all screens. The owner followed up afterwards (we had to do all communication via Internet/phone as I was out of town) to make sure I knew everything. Great hometown guy. Would recommend to anyone.

The job entailed replacing damaged boards in the middle of a large floor of laminate flooring. Thought not the least expensive, his experience, timeliness, and courtesy easily made him the right choice for the job.

My experience with Beautiful Builders was great! I had a walk-in shower installed last Spring by "professional contractors'. The caulking was ugly, not done correctly, and just a mess. They worked tirelessly to get the mess cleaned up and installed new, professional caulking. It looks beautiful. I will post before and after pics once the plastic strips are installed to keep water from coming on the floor. They also put together some shelves for a pantry then arranged all our cupboard stuff and even cleaned the floor and dusted. Chelsea & Jessica are fantastic! I will be arranging for other jobs and they are my number one to contact. Very satisfied.

Jeff put tile in our shower and laid a tile floor in our bathroom and entranceway. He has great suggestions if you aren't sure what you want. And we still receive compliments on how beautiful the bathroom & flooring look. I definitely recommend his services and will use him myself in the future if/when the need arises.

Katlin helped me with designing carpet for my living room. She helped me with deciding what colors to use. We ended up with grey with border colors of beige & red. I had trouble with what size carpet to lay over my wood floors. Katlin was fantastic helping me with the layout of the room, with an eye on spacing & sizing. Couldn't have done it without her!!

My husband has very high standards and expectations for flooring installers as he used to install flooring himself several years ago. I'm very happy to report that Junior and his son exceeded our expectations and did a wonderful job installing our flooring. We felt comfortable letting them perform their work without us being home, they made sure to tidy up after themselves, and used the utmost care when moving our furniture around. I would highly recommend Junior to anyone looking for help with home projects, from smaller improvements to full kitchen and bath remodels.

I panned three projects for our home - hand rail for 3 steps from porch to walkway, approx 100 ft hand rail along walk way, & hand rail from 2nd to first floor. Based on the professional and quality job on job one, I contracted for the longer hand rail. Again they did an excellent job with the fabrication & installation - doing exactly what they contracted to do. The installation crew did the installation job efficiently & were very courteous. I was very impressed with the quality & professionalism and consequently contracted for them to do the interior hand rail. I would not hesitate recommending Cregger Construction to anyone who needs metal work

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
