This is my second project with Tony completed for me. Tony completed my walk -in closet so beautifully that I wanted him to transform my basement into my dream home office. The basement was cold and boring. Tony made it warm and inspiring. He walked through the space and asked a lot of questions to understand what I wanted and made many great suggestions that were far more greater than mine with his experience. Tony took my vision and again made it into an amazing reality. Tony covered all the walls with sheet-rock and put carpet on the floor and built all the shelving for the office. He completed the project in a timely manner, was professional and fair with his price and I felt completely safe having him in my home. For a single woman that is very important. I HIGHLY recommend Tony! The next project I do in my home I will definitely be contracting him.

Needed a basement finished that was started by another contractor. Work included drywall, taping, etc., some framing, floor repair, door and trim installation. Sam got it all done in less than a week at a fair price. He recommended a painter and a flooring man and they should be done in another week. Sam is a good guy and the quality of his work is fantastic! Would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.

I have NEVER been SO PLEASED with any independent contractor, as I am with Glenn! We had an electrical issue in our finished basement. It was quite scary, with outlets smoking. Glenn came out, analyzed the problem, went to Home Depot, bought what he needed, and fixed the problem! He quoted me a price of $225 to come out. I assumed it would be much higher to fix the problem. It turned out to be the entire price! I would recommend Glenn to anyone, for any problem! I will never use anyone else! He was prompt, thorough, listened to my concerns, explained everything in full, and I slept very well last night, knowing my house would not burn to the ground due to faulty wiring from the previous owner! Thank you, Glenn!

David responded immediately to my request for a rebuild of our basement stairs. It was planned, agreed on and executed within 36 hours, and he even fixed my "chirping" smoke alarm when he was here. Great experience and would recommend to anyone.

Mike did an excellent job on unclogging my drain in my basement. He was very accommodating with my short notice to get this job done. I placed a request late Friday night, we spoke around 7am Saturday morning. Job completed Saturday late afternoon. I found a local plumber/technician I trust.

Rob and Carl were really nice guys. They were super flexible as I needed to call them back 3 times to complete a rather intricate job of hanging IKEA cubbies in my daughter's room. They built them, painted them, and then came back to attach them to the wall. When I called them for the work originally, I didn't realize it would be that complicated. They also helped with small things like hanging some paintings and building a storage unit for the basement. They are friendly, professional and knowledgable. I will definitely use them again. Their pricing is fair, I actually gave them extra for the amount of time they put in for my project. (took longer than expected)

Emilio did a great job with our backyard deck. We initially were looking for a patio but he used his experience to recommend to us the better option of a deck. He built us a 16 x 24 patio that connects to the back door of the house. He also convinced us that the deck would look much better with a composite railing. We are happy that we made the decision to go with this option. The deck looks 10x better with this accent. He met with the county inspector and verified that the design of the deck met the inspector's specifications (the inspector wanted a beam to connect to the beam in the basement for increased stability). He arrived on time and performed the job on time. He completed the deck in less than a week. We've received compliments on our deck from everyone that has seen it. Emilio did great work, and did a great job communicating to me. I had him lined up for the replacement of our back door. However, when he saw what door we purchased, he wasn't comfortable installing this type of door. He let us know and still saved us money by delivering the door to our house. I would utilize him again for future projects and recommend him to others.

Rick and his son are the absolute best! They did an awesome job on my basement. They were a pleasure to work with. Punctual, very polite, pleasant attitude. He made me feel comfortable and I trusted whatever he told me. Even with running into electrical problems (that were actually a danger to my family), he fixed the problem(s) and did not complain that it set him back at least 2 days. My laundry room/basement is now brighter, a lot more comfortable and safe. I kept telling them how good it felt down there. I'm actually working on a list of things I want him to do in the future.

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to share my success story with you, I hired STP and Home Decor to hang drywall in my unfinished basement the I had another contractor begin. Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

We discovered mold in the basement wall and underneath laminate floor few weeks after we moved into our new house. Unfortunately this was missed by the home inspector. We had redo the full basement (1350 sq ft). This included dry wall, new ceramic tile, fireplace, theatre room, electrical work etc. Tim helped us during this painful times. He was able to find the source of the problem (water leak) which I think needed a lot patience and detective work. He always gave us a honest opinion and has a vast wealth of knowledge that you can not get on the internet. Not only is he pleasant and personable, but a stickler for perfection. He followed up on every last detail until the job was completed. The result was outstanding as we now have a basement with a very modern look. Since then we used his services numerous times and also refered him to my friends who shared a similar opinion.

I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with Kevin about a future basement finishing project. Kevin is a nice and down to earth professional. I had the pleasure of past and/or current customers respond to my reference check in which they provided nothing but wonderful reviews for Kevin's professionalism, honesty, fair pricing and quality work. I look forward in working with Kevin on our basement project in the near future and cannot wait to leave a review once it is completed. Thank you Kevin.

We initially had Tom out to give us an estimate on extending our fence so that we could fit our pool in our backyard and still meet the township requirements. By the time we got done talking, we also hired him to run the electric for our pool AND finish our huge basement. In two weeks, YES 2 weeks, they finished the fence, ran the electric, hauled away stuff from the basement that we didn’t want, AND not only finished our basement, but literally turned it into a basement that my entire family never wants to leave. Tom and his team were professional, responsive, and truly cared about every detail that they put into their work. They worked every single day (including weekends) to make sure that they not only meet their timeline, but exceeded our expectations. I have never had such a positive experience with a contractor and our family is completely IN LOVE with our gorgeous basement! Thank you Tom & team for making our basement dream come true at an extremely competitive price that we could afford. I’m almost certain we’ll be seeing you soon for whatever we decide our next project will be!

I just remodeled my home and I wanted the right paint job for my home. I really never dealt with contractors before but I was referred to Wilson's Pro Elite Painting service by a close friend of mines who gave good reviews of them so I gave them a call. Thats the best decision I could gave made. They gave me a really good estimate along with a 10% discount so I agreed to letting them do the work. They was very professional and completed quality work ahead of the estimated time and I was very pleased. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wanted their home painted. Im thinking of getting epoxy flooring in my basement niw and of course Wilson's Pro Elite Painting Service is #1 on my list. Thanks guys, Angel Bee

After interviewing a couple of contractors, we were thrilled to find Chris. He was always prompt, professional, and reasonably priced. Our basement went from a concrete unfinished space, to a beautiful new room for our family to enjoy. Chris is an excellent craftsman, and he made sure that the new renovation fit beautifully with our historic 1700's home. We highly recommend Chris.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
