Gary did a wonderful job with installation of our new windows. The windows were original picture windows circa 1920 and quite large. He replaced each window with double windows, and now we get to enjoy fresh air in our dining room! Gary worked alone, straightforward and was very pleasant and professional. While we need to save up some money, we do intend on replacing 14 more windows in the home, and possibly both of our front doors. Thank you for your fast service and detailed work. We will call you again, hopefully soon! Wanda

Fantastic work! If I could have selected all 5 options (professionalism & punctuality I left unchecked because it only allows you to check 3 of 5 reasons that you liked your hired person). Dan was available when I needed him, which was within 2 days. He arrived here at 8:20am which he gave me a 2 hour arrival window of 8-10am. He was so friendly and knowledgeable and installed my new opener (which I purchased prior to hiring him) and removed my old garage door opener all within the 2 hour quote he gave me for installation timeframe. He did so much more than I expected, like fixing a handle, greasing my old parts that were staying, etc. He reviewed all the features with me and even showed me how to release the door if I had a power outage, which never crossed my mind. He is so easy to talk to and I honestly cannot give him high enough praise! The price was exactly what he said it would be, which I thought was a great deal. You will not be disappointed by hiring him for any install or repairs. He clearly knows his business! Im thrilled with my experience and I understand why he’s always gotten a 5 star rating. He truly deserves it!!

My garage door was a mess. He replaced panels and repaired opener. He didn't try to make me buy a whole new door. Would definitely recommend him to others. A real gentleman as well

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.
