Brian and his brother were absolutely amazing. I submitted my request midnight and they were at my place around 1:00pm (on time) the next day. Brian texted which is something I really appreciated (younger generation). Anyway, I'm not sure how they did it, but within an hour, everything was loaded onto their truck and my garage was junk free. For the price, the service was excellent. Would definitely use them again in a heart beat. They saved me from paying for another dumpster.

I purchased a new single stall garage door from Garage Entry Systems and Andrew did the installation. He did a great job. Andrew also went above and beyond by repairing my existing garage door opener at no charge. He's a good family man, honest, courteous, timely and went out of his way to satisfy his customer. My wife and I highly recommend him.

We had a wonderful experience with our specialty demo project. We had cabinets removed and a section of wall cut into a passthrough. Cleetus was very polite, on time, and very professional. He was very patient with my silly questions and he called to update me on his progress and to advise me that we might want to make changes to the original plan. I thought this was above and beyond customer service. He was very patient as we tried to figure out how to complete the project and even went out of his way to find someone to finish the work on the passthrough. He left the area clean and the cabinets entirely intact and stacked nicely in the garage, along with a piece of crown molding. We will definitely use him again. His prices are very fair and competitive and he's fully insured and above board. His level of experience shows in his work.

I would like to congratulate Duane and his colleagues on a truly exceptional job. This was a relatively small job, removing a failing wall and replacing a concrete slap (about 7'x8'ft). Duane visited our house very promptly, and noticed that beyond the problems with the wall/slab that three storm drains were blocked which my have contributed to the underlying problem. He provided a very! detailed and reasonable quote, his team performed the work over a rational time period (given weather constraints) and the result was exceptionally well done. I would like to highlight a few facets of the work which I truly enjoyed: 1: the attention to detail, while the drains were flowing, it wasn't quite fast as expected, he and his team actually worked till they found a chunk of old copper drain pipe deep in the storm drain. 2: the attention to quality, the concrete work was beautifully finished, the drains were resealed after clearing 3: the project was completed in a timely fashion. While not the only project on his books, it was completed well and in a reasonable time frame.. No long waits. Overall I was very happy with Goubeaud and Company's work and I will absolutely hire them again in the future.

Zak Meyer Restoration is one of those companies that you just want to support. The guy, Zak, comes in, and he brings apple pie with him. Not only does he get jobs done early, but they're also under budget. Not one, not twice, every fucking time. I'm there, thinking to myself, is this guy some kind of superhero, or something. Never in my life have I seen a human being work at the speed, with the quality, at the price of this guy. He replaced the baseboards and trim in my house He installed a beautiful crown molding in the foyer, dining room, kitchen. He suspended a ninety inch wide, five inch thick glass panel from the ceiling in my back house so I could use it as a transparent projector screen. What can I say? The guy works fucking miracles. TWENTY STARS.

I know Cliff and use his services for the last 10 years. As a single woman I periodically end up in disaster that needs emergency intervention. I always count on Cliff and I know he will do his possible best and super job. He did electrical job for my basement and garage, fixed plumbing and leakage in the bathroom, fixed number of kitchen and laundry room problems, compose furniture, assemble and put on shelves on the walls, completely replaced outdated and broken light pol on a front yard of my house. Besides great job and high quality to his work, he is an "old school" in his working ethics of discipline and responsibility. Rear quality in our days! I recommend him to my friends, family members and even my employer without any reservations and everybody were very satisfied. Hire Cliff you will get 5 star quality service! Irena C. (Whitehall)

Ron has done ALL my home and office modeling for the last 25 years. The bigger projects have included two total kitchen makeovers, a custom home office addition, 3 decks, and the complete conversion of a residential building into a commercial property. Ron is skilled, economical, diligent, and a true pleasure to work with. Some of the projects have required an architect. There has never been an issue with building as designed or in meeting all township codes or inspections. Though not requested, I am totally comfortable including my phone number as a reference. John and his excellent team created a Laundry and Mud Room space from inside our garage. I can't say enough about how excellent John's company and his team were. They were very punctual, incredibly neat and tidy and held themselves to a high level of workmanship. They overcame several challenges, all taken in stride to give us a main floor laundry area that now looks like it was always part of the house. John saw our vision and executed it. Couldn't be more pleased!!

We have used Remarkable Renovations for various remodeling jobs throughout our house. Bill was the ONLY contractor to write up a proposal for my new closet exactly as I wanted. He then remodeled our kitchen which we absolutely love. He helped us with a foundation issue as well. Another awesome project he worked on for us was transforming an old dirty garage into a workable gym with electricity, foam flooring, and new doors. He is reasonable, timely, and respectful of our schedules, etc.

I used JD Construction for a whole renovation of my home. I had water damage and the crew came in and did a fine job. I'm very pleased with the way they came in and did the clean up first, the tear out and then the remodeling of my kitchen, bathroom, downstairs game room, laundry room and garage. The team is a great group of men willing and eager to work along with you. I highly recommend them. I have to say that the owner of this construction company, is an honest man, but most importantly a gentlemen.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
