Dane is a wonderful, funny, straight forward educator, with the best sense of humor. He has a fantastic approach with kids by showing them respect. He is able to build up their practical skills, all while encouraging them to reach and stretch their goals. I highly recommend Dane for any tutoring need you have. He has helped my sons Algebra 2 grade improve from almost failing to top in the class. He also has mentored him in his approach with teachers and coaches. He has shown him that accountability goes a long way and that you can succeed with hard work.

Brandon is a great tutor. He made complicated concepts in Algebra and Chemistry very simple and easy to grasp. With Brandon's assistance, I managed to bring a failing Chemistry grade up to a B.

Returned to college and had to re-take College Algebra. I mistakenly took a self guided course and was spending over 25 hours per week on the homework. I hired Allen to to tutor me and now only spend 1-2 hours outside of our lessons (I see him 1-2 times per week). He is EXCELLENT, patient, trustworthy and very good at helping me understand my assignments. I would have dropped the course if not for him. I would not hesitate in recommending his services!

Ms. Musick has been working with my 9th grade daughter in Algebra II. I can't not say enough about how this tutoring has change my daughters math experience — she has gone from struggling with homework and tests to a consistent understanding of the math process. Additionally, she has gone up 2 full grades in the time that Nancy has been working with her. Nancy is a caring and patient teacher who has more then once adjusted her schedule to work with my daughter for tests and midterms. I highly recommend her services and greatly appreciate her professionalism.

Cindy tutored my 10th grader in accelerated algebra 2 for most of the school year once or twice a week and she transformed what we thought would be a horrendous school year with math into a very successful one. Cindy cares a lot about her students and will go above and beyond to make sure they understand the material. She was always reliable and made an effort to accommodate our schedule as much as possible. I can't recommend her highly enough.

I will be the first to admit that I am not the world's best student, but I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person. It so happened that the subject of Linear Algebra was particularly problematic for me because none of my professors presented it in a way that left me with an understanding deep enough to take a test on it, let alone apply it in a real world scenario outside the bounds of a test problem. This was my third time through the course, and I did not relish the idea of going for a fourth round. I had been barely scraping by and my final exam loomed. I reached out to Dr. Karel and he spent an afternoon with me, going over the concepts that were eluding me. His clear explanations of the subject matter gave me the ability to link the missing pieces together! What was lacking in the previous presentations of the concepts became much clearer. I passed my final, and the class thanks to his help! Better still, I walked away not hating the subject which says a lot. I've since found actual applied practical uses for it since then, and I'm fairly certain that I would not have seen the opportunities to use what I learned without the deeper understanding I got out of that tutoring session.

When I was a sophomore, I was struggling with Algebra 2— thats when my mom discovered Charlene Brown through tutorpedia. I will forever be thankful for Charlene as a tutor because she did an amazing job. I was always better at geometry, but Charlene would spend so much time helping me break down the aspects of Algebra 2 that i didn’t understand. I remember that Charlene always said that everyone can understand math, as long as you can break it down into pieces that you understand. I did really well in Algebra 2, and I couldn’t wait to have Charlene tutor me in physics junior year. Physics is definitely the worst subject I’ve ever taken, and without Charlene I’m not sure what I would have done. Charlene is definitely one of the greatest teachers I’ve ever known; again, she would spend so much time explaining things to me until I had it in my head. I recall always saying to her, “I really don’t like physics.”— and she would reply with, “Well Physics doesn’t like you then.” It was an ongoing line that kept some comedy within the actual learning. Again at the end of the year, I found myself grasping concepts that I would never have understood without Charlene. I was so sad to learn of her relocation to Dallas during my senior year, but i could not be happier to have known and worked with Charlene, and I 100% recommend her to anyone who is looking for an amazing tutor. We miss you Charlene!

My 7th grade year in Algebra I Honors, I started to face adversity when it came to critical thinking and analyzing my materials for exams. I contacted Dianne Le and ever since the first session I have changed my work ethic and have become a better individual. Although the rigor tried to take over and frustrate/limit my abilities, Dianne knew how to teach me to limit my stress and make outlines instead of burning out. Whenever my normal teachers approach on a problem did not 'click' Dianne would go out of her way to make me understand it in another way through her artistic abilities. Thanks to Dianne, I managed to raise my grade from a C to an A; later allowing me to apply to a scholarship program and get in. Later on in 8th grade whenever I needed help for my program she would always be available and often made the commute to my town regardless of her tight schedule. Right now Im in 9th grade and Dianne still reaches out and helps me out whenever I am in need. She even took her time to send me a list of service learning opportunities 2 years later!! She is no longer just my math tutor, but she has become a role model and some may even say my mentor. Kudos to her

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
