Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

Spoke with Bob prior to installation of a 50" wall mount tv and a sound bar. Bob was a little behind schedule but did call. Bob was informative, consulted with me during the process regarding my preferences for tv viewing. He was clean and had all the equipment to do the job in a neat and timely fashion. Would definitely recommend him to others.

Bob did a terrific job installing my articulating tv wall mount for a 40 inch Samsung in the kitchen. He hid the outlet behind the tv and ran the wires into the laundry room so that the cable box would be out of sight in the kitchen. He showed me various options in advance, including a sketch. The job was somewhat challenging because Bob had to attach the mount to a metal stud. He did the job professionally and expertly--and in less than 4 hours. I was so delighted with the finished job that I paid him more than the agreed price.

We had Bill mount 2 of our tvs. On the phone, Bill and I had discussed the labor that would be entailed and the concealment of electrical cords behind the wall. Bill was unable to conceal the cords (due to the structure of the wall), which was fine. However, Bill complained the entire project. At one point, he gave up on the second mount and told my husband that he would have to complete it on his own. Fortunately, my husband found the manual and helped Bill complete the mount. Our tvs were not difficult to mount. Bill complained about having other things to do, and that he had been at our house long enough. We were very disappointed with the service, and had planned on finding a steady handyman in Bill. Our tv mounts are installed, but the experience was unfortunate. Bill was a nice guy, but we will not be hiring him again due to the complaints and negative attitude.

If you are looking for professionalism, excellent work and superior customer service, then Bob is your man. Bob was extremely meticulous, not only with mounting my television (which included installing a new outlet and of course concealing the wires within the wall) but also with his prep and final clean up. I was impressed with not only his stellar job on the mount but also his exceptional knowledge in regard to troubleshooting other household repairs. Bob was easy to talk to and provided sound advice across the board. I would not only recommend Bob for TV mounts but for any household challenges you may have. It is really hard to find good help these days and you definitely get that when Bob is on the job.

Everything everyone says about Bob is absolutely true. Bob mounted a TV and sound bar for my new living room, and it looks outstanding! The installation took around 3.5 hours, which included setting up a new outlet and concealing all electrical wires in the wall, in addition to mounting the TV. He was also extremely neat and did a great job of cleaning everything up after the job was finished. Even his 1 mistake impressed me: during the job he accidentally nicked a bit of my wall (an area that was always going to be concealed anyway), but immediately whipped out his spackle and repaired the minor damage, all the while explaining how I could improve my spackling technique. After he applied the touch up paint it's impossible to tell where the damage took place. His expertise, combined with his pleasant demeanor and ability to accommodate my busy work schedule (I couldn't make it home until 7:00 PM, not a problem for him at all) has resulted in one very happy customer. I will certainly be calling up Bob again to install surround sound once I decide on the right speaker system, and I encourage anyone considering hiring Bob to pull the trigger. You won't be disappointed.
