Anne was hired to teach my 6-year-old son Spanish since his current school does not offer Spanish until later. (He's had some exposure in preschool through K.) She seems to speak fluently and is great at redirecting young children, who tend to be easily distracted. Her teaching methods are engaging with fun little props that are age-appropriate. She was also really good at correcting his pronunciation and giving positive feedback. I think she would have been a great tutor for him, but wasn't a good fit as the sole/lead source to teach the language. They went through a lot of new materials during the hour and half sessions. There was new vocabulary each week (probably 30-40) without reviewing them the next session. And there was no curriculum or plan to show progression. And as nice as she was, I didn't feel like I could make requests/suggestions since she didn't want me to be present from the start. Lastly, she has a tendency to be a little late - about 10 minutes or so - but she will make up the time. And you'll need to monitor the time since she's not very particular if it runs a bit over.

Luke is really fantastic, really knows his stuff, not just the language, but the culture, on the ground in numerous Spanish-speaking countries. And number one that sets him apart from the rest is he gets you speaking, it's just in his personality and the way he guides you through the learning process.

I have been getting tutored by Kate for a few months and she has really improved my speaking skills. Most teachers and tutors focus on reading and writing but Kate has been awesome at creating scenarios for using Spanish in real life. We barely use any Spanish during our lessons. I highly recommend Kate as a tutor for anyone looking to improve their conversational skills!

I had Carole proof read and then do a grammar check for my Doctor of Ministry dissertation. She did an excellent job of finding and correcting my mistakes and re-configuring sentences and paragraphs so that they read better than I had originally written them. Likewise, she corrected my footnote errors and made sure the paper conformed to the format expected of the seminary. In short, it was a tremendous relief having Ms. King go through my paper and then not have to worry about those aspects of my paper and instead allowing me to concentrate on the content of the paper.

Natasha has been my tutor for two years now. I have learned with her more Spanish than I did in all the years of my high school. She is the best tutor I've had: very professional and knowledgeable, patient and personable. My lessons with her are always fun. She is enthusiastic and supportive about my learning the language. She helped me understand the differences between the Preterit and Imperfect, and also the Subjunctive in Spanish. She provided useful examples to show the contrasts and use of these concepts in real language, and created meaningful contexts for me to practice them in writing and verbally. Natasha always comes to class prepared and is eager to answer my questions. I enjoy my lessons with Natasha and recommend her highly to anyone who wants to learn Spanish. I know my Spanish -- both grammar and conversational skills -- have improved since Natasha started working with me.

My former students, a mixture of business people, researchers, health care professionals, and others, would say that I get my students to feel relaxed and engaged while speaking another language, have endless patience, keep my own talking to a minimum (very important!), and use a lot of humor and imagination in conversation and language coaching.

I am a professional spanish native speaker that have been raised and born in a spanish speaking country. I went to the school and university in spanish. It is my first language and I am currently teaching spanish for a renowned international language company. The spanish that I teach is the "real proper spanish", is not the "TV spanish", so you can use what you'll learn at work, business meetings, interviews, university, school, trip to any spanish country, etc.

I am a fully bilingual, a native Spanish speaker, with over 10 years’ trajectory in tutoring and with experience as Teaching Assistant and Substitute Teacher in Beaver County School District.I have a Bachelor's degree in Language and Literature and a Master's degree in Mass Communication, and a passion for writing and effective usage of language. My English and Spanish language skills are complemented by my proficiency in additional romance languages (French and Italian) for better in-depth understanding of the language, and a valuable resource when it comes to meaningful and memorable explanations about grammar, vocabulary, idioms, exceptions and nuances. My Spanish accent is generic, which is most practical to adopt in the United States than a particular one from so many countries that make up our Hispanic population. Having traveled and lived in a number of different Spanish countries, exposed to the varied Hispanic language diversity, I am able to help students preserve pronunciation from a specific country, if that were part of the language goal. Individuals as well as teachers who are not native Spanish speakers, tend to adopt the Spanish accent from a particular country where they have taken residence, which is unavoidably adopted by their language students and often unintentionally exaggerated.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
