Ummm So Shannon was AMAZING. With little direction to go on by me, she came with more then she promised. Her food was the highlight of my wife's baby shower, for sure. Everyone talked about how good teh food was, people were asking for recipes...it really was above and beyond what i could have asked for. Her prices were resonable and she was an absolute pleasure to have around. We didn't even get BBQ, and the food was delicious. I may be contacting her for a few small orders of her gluten free pastries (which she made for us custom). I really can't say enough about how impressed and thankful I am. Hire, Shannon now if your reading this...You will be glad if you do!

We ordered drop-off catering for my sister-in-law's baby shower for 30 people. Chef Anton worked with me to get the menu finalized and helped with getting me the proper equipment to host the party at my house, which was a huge help as I had a 6 week old baby as of the week of the party. The food was delivered and set up before schedule and everyone agreed that the food was delicious! One thing I wished had been disclosed earlier was delivery costs and other price line items. The initial quote thru Thumbtack was $15 per person but that did not include the delivery fee or other fees. It was well worth the cost, but I just wish I was aware earlier on. Thank you, Anton, I would happily recommend you to my family and friends!

I hired Chef Kim to cater my sister's baby shower of 60 people. She was able to work with my price range of $10/pp. As for the food, the Cesar salad was average.. Nothing spectacular .. Lettuce, parm cheese and croutons and dressing out of a bag... I think that was disappointing.. I would have preferred more homemade ingredients in the salad. Also on the the menu was a Dijon mustard pork loin, breaded chicken with tomato basil and mozzarella, a pasta with vegetables in a cream sauce, pesto potatoes, and mixed vegetables. The pasta, chicken, and potatoes were absolutely delicious... The main reason why she was rated 4 stars. The pork was somewhat fatty and a little undercooked to my liking even though we did place it in an oven before serving it. I would say it was a good experience and I would consider using Chef Kim again.

Jim & Cindy were such a great find for our May wedding! Cindy helped alleviate a lot of stress and questions I had, especially since I’m not in the wedding industry, and really helped me out with her tips and tricks! After speaking with a few other "big" caterers, talking to Cindy felt so personal and attentive. She really took the time during my initial phone call to get to know what I was looking for, our price point, what we were like as a couple, and what I was hoping for from our day. Phone calls seemed to be the best way to get into contact with either of them, as opposed to email or social media, which was fine with me. Since we went with Shady Maple for our cake, they even picked it up on their way, which was a huge help! Our venue had very strict rules, and they were willing to negotiate a fair price so that we could use their services, but still abide by the venue. On the day of the wedding, Jim and Cindy were great! The food was amazing, they helped break down at the end of the night, and really went above and beyond. I’m so happy we went with DuJour!!

Thanks so much for helping to make our baby shower a great success. Everyone loved the food. My only suggestion would be if you are catering such a party to a group of women to make the sandwiches smaller like 1/2 the size! I would definitely use you again and recommend to others. Take care and have a great Christmas and holiday. Susan Caldwell

This was my first catering and Thumbtack experience. My husband and I hosted our daughter's bridal shower in our backyard. The bridesmaids had the Paris theme from the movie, Bridesmaids. They requested French food from Dawn which was new for her and myself. Dawn pulled it together the week of the shower with raving reviews on the food from the 40 + ladies in attendance. It was all good, but, ironically, the one item not requested that she brought won first place reviews from my guests- the Monte Cristo finger sandwiches. The ratatouille came in at a close second. I only gave Dawn a four because of responsiveness to my questions. Our communication began two months prior to the shower, and it was quite minimal as you can see listed. At one point, there was more than three weeks between comments. However, I do believe that Dawn will get better at the business end of it the more she does it. She has the food down pat!

I used Avalon Catering for a bridal shower I gave at my home. They arrived on time, were extremely professional and everyone raved about how delicious the food was! The shortribs and crabcakes were amazing and the eggplant rigatoni was a great option for my vegatarian guests. Thank you for making my event a resounding success! I would definitely use Avalon to cater my future events and would hands down recommend them to our friends.

Kyle and Jenna catered our "non-traditional" baby shower/party. They worked with us to create a fun and casual menu, and the food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING; even the harshest critics noted how great everything was. Also, their setup and presentation were perfect, and they continuously checked on the food, reheated when necessary, and threw in some additional items that our guests loved. I truly look forward to the next time I could recommend them, or have another occasion where I can use their services!

I was provided top of the line caterer service. From the food to the design of the buffet line it was precise and well thought out. My baby shower theme was Greek and he was able to come up with a customized menu that suited my desires and needs. His gourmet services provided their own staffing during the event and made it easier for me to focus on my other duties. Definitely a company I will use again gourmet or time and my guests rave the best food they've ever had at an event.

Working with Cortney & Elisabeth of Plate Catering could not of been any better! Before my daughter's baby shower they provided me with ample menu suggestions plus samples of their food to taste. Elisabeth arrived at my home early, prepped all the food and had it ready to go when my guests arrived. She continually replenished the platters as they emptied. The food & service received rave reviews from myself and my guests. When it was time for her to leave my kitchen was spotless - she washed all pots ,pan & platters used I the prep of the food! If you want a first class caterer then hire these ladies because they are fabulous!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

      • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
      • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
      • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
      • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
      • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
