Mark did a great job and charged a fair price for removing our old countertops and troubleshooting a couple of issues related to our kitchen remodel. Highly recommend.

Mike came over on short notice and listened to what we wanted to do. He gave us some good advice about our current project and some future jobs as well. He performed the installation in the time we discussed. All-in-all a good experience. We'll definitely contact Mike for future projects.

Hire Dan, you will not be disappointed! I could not be more pleased with the quality of work and how pleasant and easy to work with Dan is. I found him very knowledgeable and competent about what he does. He arrived as he said he would, and completed the job quickly and efficiently in the time estimated. His quote was also right on. I am busy making a list to have him come back and do some more work in the house. Dan remodeled a small bedroom to be use as an office. He changed it from a deep color to a fresh light peach and blue. He took the needed steps to get a smooth, even coverage. He added a room fan, where there was no fixture, removed wall-to-wall carpet, and installed a laminate wood floor. He was careful to cover the entryway and stairs as they were going in and out in “the winter weather”. He accommodated a couple of unexpected little extra things that came up while he was here. I really am loving my new room and will continue to hire Dan as needs arise.

The glowing reviews that Rory Richard has received are no exaggeration. Rory just completed a job painting a double vanity and bathroom cabinet for me and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Rory is fantastic! He is prompt, neat, hard-working, and his pricing is very reasonable. Most importantly, Rory is a perfectionist who does meticulous work. It is rare in today’s world to find somebody this conscientious. I highly recommend this contractor.

Joe and his brother did an awesome job installing crown molding in my house! They were very particular in their work in order to provide me with the best craftsmanship possible. I was particularly impressed with their communication and attention to detail. The cost for installation and materials was most reasonable. Joe and Frankie were very personable as well as trustworthy. I would welcome them back anytime in the future to complete additional projects in my home.

Pat did an A+ job. We bought a house that had vynal flooring in the kitchen and the previous owner left enough hardwood to complete the kitchen. Pat gave a competative price and completedo the as per his quote. He was respectful of our home and left the space clean. He also did great work around uneven floorboards. I would hire Pat again and I would/will recommend Pat.

When we were having the basement flooring installed, mold was discovered in one of the walls. After getting a couple estimates, not only did Dave give a very reasonable price, he made arrangements to start the remediation the next day. He did a very thorough job over the next few days until completed. We called Dave again a few months later when we needed some steps to be rebuilt for safety reasons. He worked very efficiently and completed the job in a days time. I would recommend Dave as he does quality work and in a timely manner.

We had light fixtures and a ceiling fan installed, they look fantastic. He also let us know before installing the ceiling fan that it was not working properly and was able to let us go and get a replacement and still install the same day. Would definitely recommend.

Done in a very timely manner. Mark had the patience to answer all my questions, even when I thought I was going overboard. One of the most kindest person to meet let alone being hired as a contractor. He took his time in getting the work done, no impression that he had to get this done to meet any deadline. He thoroughly worked out a great layout for the tile - floor design we asked for so it was centered and eye catching. Quality of work was excellent, very neat during work, especially after he finished. Would always recommend him without hesitaiton

My wife and I engaged Paul to install hardwood flooring in our Living Room, Dinning Room, Stairs, and hallways. Paul also removed and replaced the bannister going upstairs. We are very happy with the job that was done. Paul visited with us multiple times to determine what we needed. Once hired, Paul arrived early every day and was very friendly. Our home was kept clean throughout the whole project. I was especially pleased to find Paul flexible to make adjustments to his work based on conversation we would have with him. We would definetly work with Paul on other projects in the future.

Bruce and Co. was hired to install tile 900 sq ft of tile (looks like hardwood) in my custom home in Chadds Ford, PA. Bruce was extremely prompt, professional and helped me get my project on schedule. After getting the run-a-round from other bidders, I was EXTREMELY happy that I found Bruce. He delivered the project on time and on budget and did an excellent job. This project was not easy as the floor had a transistion from a new family-room addition to the original kitchen floor. The original structure was circa 1939 and not completely level. Bruce was able to work his magic to level the floor using an additional layer of backer board and mortar. In the end I had a beautiful floor that was seamless.

We hired GCI to update our entire house , from the cellar to the third floor. New rugs , floors, paint, new bathroom and kitchen and a total clean up for the entire house. Updates were made to the plumbing and electrical systems. Perry and his crew were excellent. They showed up every day on time, they were respectful and kind to my entire family. They did beautiful work. Perry was always available to talk to with any questions. The crew worked quickly and we trusted them 100 percent. I was reluctant to start such a large project but Perry and his crew were there for us from start to finish. They made our house a home and I will be forever grateful to them. They went above and beyond their duties every day. Our family has a better life and we couldn’t be happier with our new home . Thank You Perry and crew !!!!!

When we first went to Quality Floors we were greeted with friendliness and smiles. Jessica Gelmacher who took care of us was so helpful. We told her we needed pet friendly kitchen flooring and carpeting . She showed us several options and gave us samples to take home so we could decide. After we decided what we wanted Dan came to do the measurements. He did an excellent job! Within two to three weeks the work was being done. The first men that came put Coretex in the kitchen, hallway and half bath. They did a beautiful job. Then the next two did the dining room, living room, stairway and second floor hallway. The young man told us that Mark was the best at laying carpet. He was absolutely right and I’m sure he was learning a lot from Mark.(Sorry I don’t remember his name but he too did an excellent job . He was also very pleasant and polite. When we come in our home it is so beautiful and the workmanship was gorgeous. We went to several places but decided on Quality Floors because everyone that we came into contact with were friendly, helpful, and courteous. We will definitely recommend Quality Floors to everyone. My daughter has alll ready done this, plus recommended they ask for Mark. We want to thank everyone from the beginning to end for making our home beautiful and gorgeous . We can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate your knowledge and helpfulness. Thanks so much again !! Bill & Judy Heywood plus Stacy

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
