Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

I truly do not like writing bad reviews but this “company” should not be providing their services to anyone and I’d like to share my experience to help others avoid the mistake I made. I would like to start by saying the initial contact was good, which led me to believe I picked the right movers, very prompt and friendly communication. We discussed the size of the move, the items, the drive, pickup and delivery circumstances, etc. Once the details were finished, I placed my deposit and waited for moving day. I opted in for the afternoon slot as I wanted to give myself ample time in the morning to load my belongings I was not having them take. I receive a call around 11:30 saying the movers will be at my location around 1:00 to start loading. We arrive at the storage unit and I unlock the unit for the movers to start. I had to go to the office at the storage facility as I was switching to a smaller unit. To my surprise, I come back from signing my papers and the movers haven’t touched a single item and it’s already been 15 minutes. The mover is on the phone with the coordinator and is saying my belongings aren’t all going to fit into the 16 foot truck. I’m shocked by this as I had gone over the size of my unit and what was being moved prior to this. May I also add, the truck used to load this unit was 15 feet and they were able to pack everything in. I also explain I’m leaving some of the items behind as I will not be needing them at my new place, to reassure them it will all fit. He wraps up the phone call and has me sign the start papers. I signed, stupidly not mentioning the start time as they hadn’t moved a single thing for the first now 20 minutes they had me on the clock. I’m now thinking to myself, at least this should go fast now. WRONG. It took the movers almost 2 hours to load the truck, and that was with some help from my sister and me. All of my belongings were already packed and stored away, and my unit was only a 10 x 10. When everything was originally moved into the unit, it took about an hour to put everything in there. On top of the unnecessary amount of time to load, the movers obviously had no idea how to pack a truck. I had to leave behind several of my belongings besides the original items I already knew I was leaving behind. They put small items, boxes and bags, in FIRST and didn’t stack them! I asked them to move my refrigerator to my new unit and as they’re doing so, my sister and me are able to pack my dining room chairs into the truck still since the movers had no intention of doing so. They finally come back from moving the fridge and we are on the road to my new home. My sister and I arrive first and begin unloading what I didn’t have the movers move which was my clothes, bathroom items and my necessities for my dogs. We are able to unload the entire pickup truck before the movers even get to the place which took us about 20-25 minutes. To put things into perspective, the move was from Reading to Lancaster, a 45-50 minute drive. I already knew they were running the clock from the amount of time it took to load everything up. It took them about an hour and ten minutes from when they left to when they arrived. They open the truck and start moving. I have a second floor which I also disclosed to Emily when making the arrangements. That must not have been passed on to the movers as they were not happy when I told them I was not on ground level. First thing they bring up is my love seat. After getting it up the stairs, the mover informs me they scratched the wall on the way up and they’ll take the legs off for the other two. Guess what they didn’t do, take the legs off. My entire stairwell had black scuffs and scratches from the moment you walked in up to the very top of the stairs. Next the movers bring in my mattress. They bring it up the stairs and the one mover is so out of breath I’m actually concerned he may pass out. After collecting himself, he asks if anyone would be able to run and get him some turkey hill iced tea. I wish I was kidding, but this is what my move has turned into. Luckily for him, I had to bring my co-workers truck back so I opted in to pick some up for him to hopefully pick up the pace a little bit. Before I leave, I ask them, which I also discussed with Emily, to assemble my bed frame if they get to it while I’m gone. I’m then informed that my bed bolts are missing so they can’t. Once the frame was moved in, all the bolts were STILL ATTACHED to the frame. The movers just didn’t want to assemble it. As I’m gone, my mom and stepdad are still there and are giving me status updates. The one mover is standing in the truck handing the other one boxes and not helping him bring anything into the apartment. I make my way back and there’s still a quarter of the truck left to unload and it’s already been an hour and a half. At this point, I can hear the movers complaining about how tired they are and they want to go home. My sister and I unload my moms van in about 15 minutes and the movers barely made a dent. We then started helping them unload as I didn’t want to be charged more than I needed because they’re dragging their feet. Everything is FINALLY unloaded and the move is completed after 5 and a half hours of what felt like torture. The mover calls Emily, his boss, and tells them we are done. She asks to speak to me and inquires how the move went. I’m on the movers phone and feel quite awkward so I tell her it went okay and asked how much I owed. I gave the mover my payment and they were off. As if my move wasn’t stressful enough as is; the aftermath is even WORSE! I reach out to Emily to express with my frustrations and dissatisfaction through my experience. The response I received was a complete 180 of how she was when we first spoke. She BLAMED ME for not contacting her during the move to arrange more movers or a larger vehicle. I was never informed I was able to reach out during my service. Aside from that, I was too occupied babysitting and assisting the movers she did provide me with. I also would have been charged more per hour if others needed to be involved because the original crew couldn’t get it done in time. I’ve been trying to resolve this for over two weeks now and she has stopped responding to my messages. After paying $865; I’m stuck with damaged walls, items I still have yet to move to my new place and a truly horrible experience with zero sympathy or resolution from this company. Please, please, PLEASE, do your research and read more reviews. Had I read the reviews on Google, I 110% would not have hired this company. They will take advantage of you, under quote you, have zero care for your belongings, house, or time and then completely disregard you after you’ve paid. I would have been better off hiring two strangers off the street and saved myself a lot of money too. Buyer beware, this company is a professional scam artist.

I am so happy I found Kingdom Movers. Other companies gave me inflated estimates that included all types of extra fees but I chose Kingdom Movers because they were the first to give me an honest and affordable estimate. They stood by their estimated price and did an outstanding job.

It went really well. The movers were quite professional, it did seem as though that they're professionals, and they were relatively cheap as well. It wasn't a long move, just a few blocks away and from a 2 bed apartment to a 3 bed apartment. They were quick and responsive all throughout and I would definitely hire them again.

I knew I wanted to use a local company and Mike and his crew did not disappoint. They were all very friendly, professional and cared about getting the job done well. They were running ahead of schedule which is great in my book and finished well under the estimated time for the move. Would absolutely use again but seriously hope we don’t ever have to move again:)
