I give Julia my highest praise as a tutor. I have been extremely pleased with her work in tutoring my son in beginning Spanish. Julia's upbeat personality is very engaging and she is always very encouraging. She has a nice way of providing constructive criticism and keeps him motivated by changing course when things get a little tough. Probably the biggest compliment comes from my son who routinely says that their tutoring session feels more like 30 minutes and not an hour. Not only do I recommend Julia to my family and friends (she also tutors my nephew and my neighbor), but as a child psychologist, I also recommend her to my middle and high school patients who are struggling in school. I wish every child who struggles with school could have their very own Julia Bluher. I would welcome the opportunity to provide any additional information about my experience with Julia and can be contacted at 410-598-6041. Sincerely, Sarah Reusing, Ph.D.

Patricia is a wonderful Spanish tutor. I have been working with Patricia for about a month and feel like I have learned more than I did in 4 years of Spanish in school. Patricia will challenge you but in a very kind, encouraging way. I look forward to my weekly lessons! Highly recommend!

I had the pleasure of working with Julio at an innovative healthcare start-up organization. He served as the interpreter for all Spanish-speaking clients. I am a Master's-prepared Registered Nurse who relied on Julio to obtain complex medical information from clients, from a lengthy initial intake to subsequent follow-up phone calls. Julio has an outstanding demeanor and was always able to ask my questions, clarify the responses, and ensure that the information was accurate. There were days when we would do many calls, back-to-back, and he was always polite and friendly to our clients. He never missed an appointment and was completely reliable. I highly recommend Julio as a dedicated and enthusiastic professional.

    About

I am a Baltimore based native Italian-based tutor. I lived for more than ten years in Spain and South America where I studied at the University of Chiapas. I taught extensively Italian and Spanish for the last 9 years. I taught at college level (Bucknell University) as well as private tutor for adults and professional. Two years ago I started to teach online and I am constantly updating my resources and my linguistic approaches (i.e flipped classroom method, communicative approach, etc). Lessons are tailored on student needs. I do not require students to buy any materials. In particular arts and architectural professionals, you may request special classes on sectorial languages. I teach Italian language and culture at all levels, Spanish beginners through upper intermediate. With me you won't miss a lesson! If you can meet me in person, and if you are on holiday or you simply feel tired I can always teach you online. I believe learning new languages is fun, a great gym for our brain and that everybody can succeed.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
