Fast and responsive service. Had vinyl tiles laid in kitchen floor and 3 rooms of carpet on the 3rd floor steamed cleaned. Very good results, excellent quality for both jobs. We will use them for all our future flooring and carpet needs.

Dave and his crew removed laminate and wood floors in my hallway and bath. They installed ceramic tiles. The tile work is outstanding! While working, they found a structural issue with my house and addressed it immediately. They were very professional. I highly recommend Dave and his crew!

Just re-read these reviews and am amazed that these guys can do it all and are honest, reliable, and great to have around the house! I hired for drywall and wall restoration for water damage from a burst pipe. What started as hanging panelling, drywall, trims and painting ended up with a putting a huge dent in my maintenance to-do list - replacing sheet rock, tile and grouting in huge hole in main bathroom without the entire gut and redo recomnended by others, repairing drywall damage on part of 3 walls and repainting the entire walls, rewiring and hanging new motion detector and exterior lights, checking wiring and replacing a new ceiling fan/light in our great room, repairing an exterior door knob - that required new screws (thru a heavy metal door!) replacing a ballast on a flourescent light, and checking/fixing an electrical outlet in our laundry room. They moved and replaced furniture and always had time to answer questions, and cleaned up all messes. I was surprised (and overjoyed) when I heard Jason, one of the brother's, specialized in outside jobs and am getting an outside list queued up for later this spring. Highly, highly recommend, and THANKS, guys!!

Jose was amazing! I hired him to lay sheet laminate in my kitchen (the old stuff was horrendous) and I couldn't have been more impressed. From beginning to end Jose was professional, courteous, and very patient with my questions. The first visit involved Jose coming in to measure my kitchen. During that visit, he made sure I was aware of not only how much it would cost (no hidden fees), but also how he would be laying the sheeting, how long the project would take to complete, and reassured me that he (and not some other random sub-contractor) would be doing the work. The day of the install Jose arrived on time (a rarity with contractors!) and got right to work with his crew. I have to say the project looks beautiful! And the story doesn't end there! While Jose was doing the laminate work I mentioned that I would like new carpet installed. He doesn't do carpets, but he immediately referred me to another contractor who also did GORGEOUS work! I really cannot stress enough how impressed I am with Jose's crew. I would definitely recommend him for anyone's laminate or tiling project.

Mr. Marshall does commercial and residential jobs. I have utilized Mr. Marshall’s services for many projects including plumbing, carpentry, and heat pump problems. In my kitchen he has installed a dishwasher, stove, new sink and faucet, a water filter system, a vinyl floor and also painted and caulked the walls. He also replaced two water damaged doors with new handmade cabinet doors that matched the existing doors perfectly. In my bathroom he installed a new vanity, faucet, toilet, medicine cabinet, custom shelving, a shower rod, and done repairs to the tub and shower faucet. Other jobs he has done for me include installing a central vac which I love, replaced and relocated my water heater to a more suitable location in my home, completed a beautiful tile job in my entry way and deck repair. Mr. Marshall is skilled with his work and is a problem solver. He has been able to complete difficult jobs that other contractors weren’t willing or able to complete for me and also for friends who I referred him to. He is skilled at dealing with inspectors, permitting and is able to cut through the red tape involved in dealing with county organizations. As a single woman I trust him to do the work I need fairly and correctly and I have referred him to several friends who have also become repeat customers. He has done basement waterproofing, well/septic repairs, and ran gas lines for friends of mine. I highly recommend his services

Rick, Vince & LB completed a job on the exterior of our house. Their workmanship was outstanding , so much so, we hired them for another job on the interior of our house. The first job they did prior to winter and involved removing 35 year old particle siding and replacing with LP siding, adding house wrap, and replacing the windows on the second floor of our home. Not only did it look perfect, our upstairs is noticeably warmer! The second job they just finished for us was replacing our 35 year old vinyl flooring in the kitchen, hall and laundry room with Armstrong Mesa stone vinyl tile with grout. Another awesome job. I couldn’t believe I was in the same house. Rick, Vince and LB are professional, punctual, accommodating, and do top notch work. Plus they clean up their mess! Highly recommended!

Brian did a great job on our kitchen upgrade. He pulled out our existing tile floor and island, laid vinyl plank flooring, and installed a mosaic tile back splash. He is also going to help us reinstall our granite when we have our island rebuilt. Brian was very easy to work with and a great communicator. He asked great questions about the details to ensure he was executing our exact vision - and the result was great. He even helped me locate the tile and picked it up for me. He stayed on schedule, finished on time, and did a great job cleaning up the site after the work was done. He clearly takes pride in his work and enjoys what he does. I would definitely recommend him for other work.

Scott White was prompt in responding to a request for a quote and was at our house the next day. The quote for basic bath renovation for a 5x8 bathroom was 50% lower than that of Lowe’s and comparable to another quote received. The difference is that he was available to begin work within a few days as opposed to us having to wait for two weeks. Scott had to deal with sub-standard plumbing which was put in when the townhouse was built in 1980. This took him a little longer but the end product was successful. He was very proficient at troubleshooting and the end product turned out very well. Scott did all of the plumbing and electrical, installed a walk in 30x60 shower with glass doors, ada compliant efficient toilet, vanity with mirror, additional medicine cabinet, towel racks, and bathroom exhaust fan. Scott also installed a ceramic floor which was at an additional cost to us since the basic install with vinyl floor was included in the price but the ceramic floor was not. We opted to install our own tile work and Scott was very kind in letting us use his wet saw and even left it behind after his work was completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
