Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

Jeff Marrazzo of All-Star Remodeling and Painting beautifully re-finished for us a very large back hall with enormous built-in cabinets. He repaired the ceiling, covered the walls with new paneling and painted all. The area is now transformed! He is a very fine carpenter and painter. He is meticulous about his work yet very efficient and very neat. Also, he's a very personable, clean-cut man who was very easy to have around the house. I learned he has many skills. We will happily engage him again when we have various future needs. (He really liked our indoor Burmese cat and was very careful not to let her outside, as he was in out so often cutting panelling in the driveway.) Maureen O'Halloran, Newton Center

We had somewhat of a unique project in mind - custom built-in bunkbeds for my soon-to-be 5 year old's room. Not only did Bob provide us with the best quote for the project, but he came over the same week to confirm the quote in person. He was on-time, professional and incredibly thorough, completing our project under time and within budget. In addition, he was able to replicate the inspiration photo I had provided him exactly as it appeared and created the most amazing set of top quality custom bunkbeds in time for my son to have for his birthday. We would highly recommend Bob to anyone who needs a talented, and honest, finished carpenter. Thanks Bob!

This is the first time I hired a carpenter for breaking two closets and making a opening between kitchen and living room (it is a baring wall) He is easy to communicate. Came, check and gave quote. from next day they started work and finished within 2 days. Before left they cleaned everything properly and also put some salt on my stairs. My wife and I was amazed. Thanks I got them. I am planning to do some other carpentry works.

I was able to book with them quickly and communicate with them at any time of day. They come over much sooner than I thought any company would be able to start my project. They worked throughout the day (not just half days) until my project was done. They even offered to help fix the wood that they were painting so that everything would be even which we really appreciated not having to get a carpenter involved as well. Their estimate came in less than the other painters. When they finished, they didn't add anything to it. I would work with them again if the need ever arises! i'm very happy with their work!!!

After several poor experiences with several carpenters hired over the years for projects needed to be done on our residence, we were fortunate enough to have found Chris. Not only is his work exceptional, he is professional , punctual and a hard worker. We worked together in designing built-ins around our fireplace. I was more than pleased with the finished product. He is extremely creative ! I would ( and have) recommended him to any needing a carpenter!

He arrived on schedule and was on site every day until the job was completed. I would recommend Schleif construction for your home renovation or building project.

Dylan was great to work with, he was prompt, responsive and kept me informed of his progress every step of the way. He discussed issues and options as they came up. No surprises ... and he actively engaged me in all decisions he had to make as the project progressed. Josh replaced our French door with a new slider. He is a very talented, knowledgeable carpenter. He responded quickly to our request, and was very professionable and helpful with our research for the correct replacement door. He personally came to our house to meet with us, take measurements and explain his time frame and fees. He and his associate were very careful to protect our kitchen floor, furniture, and deck from damage during construction. The installation took one day but Josh came back the following morning to touch up the trim and make sure we were satisfied with his work. We won't hesitate to call him again for future home projects.

We recently moved to a new home and have been searching for a carpenter to help us build and install a kitchen island. Dan did not hesitate to meet us in person to discuss our project. When we met Dan, he was extremely personable, which is definitely one of his strongest qualities. Other qualities that really stood out for us was his workmanship, professionalism, courtesy and responsiveness to emails, phone calls and text messages. Dan has delivered in every aspect as he promised since day 1 without any surprises or cut corners whatsoever. His insight and experience is an asset that has helped us finish our kitchen exactly as we imagined and his workmanship left us extremely happy with the finished project. He has been extremely patient with us even when we asked questions and he always welcomed our feedback as well. I can confidently recommend Dan to others as well as hire Dan for my own future projects. Don't hesitate to chose Dan for your own projects.

The job was to secure hand rails on two stairways to provide safety and come up to code. The work was excellent. The only problem was the carpenter arrived several hours later than expected, but considering he changed his schedule to come out on a Saturday after I expressed concern about a potential accident if someone put weight on a loose handrail, I wasn't too upset about the wait.

Had a great experience with Ederson! He built custom floating shelves for our living room. He came to look at the space only a few hours after we spoke on the phone (drove 40+ minutes from Quincy to our place in Charlestown) and finished the job 5 days later. He was extremely responsive by phone and via texting, and actively created the most cost/time efficient solution for our shelves. He worked around our schedules for the install date, so that it did not interrupt our work schedule. Overall the quality of his work was great-- the shelves fit flush with the angles walls (required a complex design by him), they are sturdy and the paint job was perfect. The shelves turned out perfect and exactly as we wanted-- He has fantastic carpenter and customer service skills. His pricing is extremely reasonable and he is an efficient, conscientious worker. Would absolutely recommend him!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

    Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

    How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
