Katrina of Designs by Katrina provided a complete house interiors consultation for our 4500 square foot home in an upper income Cape Cod community. This included space planning, layout and color palette choice, lighting, artwork placement suggestions and accessorizing for multiple rooms. Not only did she assist us in the choice of furnishings purchases, she also made fabric choices for reupholstering existing pieces in our home, all the while making them work together with appropriate placement. I felt she was extremely generous with her time, always taking plenty to answer any questions, going above and beyond and making absolutely certain we were very happy with the design! She is full of positive energy, remarkably creative, very organized, handles a multitude of tasks at once, and a pleasure to work with! We have used her for many different projects over the years. She has twice done a plan for our master bedroom, including the assistance in choice of fabrics for beautiful panels, chair upholstery, rugs, bed linens, decorative pillows and accessories. I especially love the Brunschwig and Fils European pillows on the bed that blend beautifully with the soft Benjamin Moore wall color. My daughter's bedroom has gorgeously designed pink and green silk and jacquard window treatments, accent pillows and an adorable upholstered chair that she loves! The wall color she suggested in my teenage son's room is a really rich cobalt/navy blue which ties in with the nautical feel that he wanted. The tailored sailcloth valances, banded with the same blue, over nautical alphabet panels are really perfect! The custom duvet, shams and decorative pillows complete the look! She helped create order with suggested furniture placement and the best part is that he loves his room! Katrina came up with a great idea for the mudroom to help coordinate it with the entrance foyer which has black and white ceramic tiles and a spectacular coral paint on the walls. She designed a black and white houndstooth window seat cushion for an unusual shaped built-in and did wonderful accent pillows that really pull the two spaces together! The Cape location generally dictates a Coastal feel, but Designs by Katrina managed that style with a sophisticated taste by the use of high end designer fabrics that are both elegant and understated as well as with the choice and placement of timeless accessories and paintings. Her use of beautiful cache pots with plantings of real succulents has an excellent appeal and the compliments received are numerous! In the living room there is now a lovely sofa, upholstered in a fabulous cotton velvet in a deep shade of sand, certainly to last forever, it is such a fantastic neutral! There are fireplace chairs upholstered in a great nautical blue and piped in cream. There are several lively, decorative pillows, some from a gorgeous blue linen with creamy seashells by Cowtan and Tout, edged in a really fun, whimsical, loop fringe made of chenille and ribbon and some in a sandy colored Scalamandré silk. The crisp, fresh panels hung on a custom painted rod on the bay window have sea coral on them and the painted cocktail table on the custom soft wool sisal rug is just perfection! Again, the careful choice of accessories, (vases, bowls, lamps, books and plants) she chooses really make each room very pulled together! The family room where we spend the majority of our time is made up of walls of challenging windows and French doors and she made it much warmer and softer with the use of panels on custom cut rods! We are very happy with that recommendation and solution. There are now several custom upholstered chairs and a couple of sofas that look great! We love the look and comfort of all of the accent pillows in different designer fabrics that give richness and transform the space! Some have starfish! Everyone has their favorite spot in this room! She did custom seating for our kitchen built-ins, chose fabric for the pillows, window treatments, dining room panels and dining chair seats. In our media room she provided the perfect custom sectional sofa for viewing, and blackout window treatments as well. The curtains have coral colored coral on them and are by Scalamandré; there is a really creative grouping of custom pillows for comfort as well as style! If you expect every detail to be taken care of in your home.... I highly recommend designs by Katrina!

Can I give them 10 stars?? We had a bathtub and tub surround removed and a walk-in tile shower built in its place. First of all, I appreciated that Jon didn't balk at a smaller job. I can't tell you how many places won't even give you an estimate unless you're gutting an entire room. Jon came by within a day of my contact call, and he had great ideas. I am not good at envisioning things so his ideas and pictures were very helpful. Scheduling was great. He even worked around an unexpected visit by relatives in my home. The work was excellent. They came and went and worked away and we hardly knew they were in the house. At the end of each day, whether they were there for an hour or 5 hours, they cleaned their way out of the house and left everything in fantastic shape. Usually that area of a house is a small disaster while work is being done and until the job is finished. Not so with Top of the Ladder. That was huge for me. The finished job was all I had hoped for and more. Jon answered every question, explained every step of the process, addressed every concern and, again, cleaned everything as they exited the job and the house, down to washing my bathroom floor and the stairs. They did the demolition, the plumbing, the wallboard, the tiling. He referred us to Action Glass for the doors and was spot on with his recommendation for a job well done. AND his price was extremely reasonable. I honestly dreaded taking on this project, unsure about my ideas, the mess, would I like it, etc. I would definitely contact Top of the Ladder and Jon Lewis for any other projects we decide to tackle in our home. They are not only Top of the Ladder, they are top of the line in quality. I think it's important to say that I found Top of the Ladder through an ad. I did not know Jon or any of his workers. He's not a relative or a friend of a friend. My recommendation for this service is based purely on the work done in my home.

I first met Tina four years ago through my real estate agent when selling my home. I hired Tina both to help me with staging the home I was selling as well as to give me ideas for decorating my new house. She had some fantastic thoughts for how to maximize the marketability of the house I was selling and it sold after only one day on the market! Tina was also a terrific asset when it came time to decorate my new home. She is very approachable and very easy to work with. What I loved was that she really understood my own personal taste and style preferences. When she walked into my home, she was able to put herself in my shoes and get the same feeling about the place as I did. She was also not afraid to make a few more daring suggestions than I otherwise would have thought of and left it up to me to decide if I was comfortable with them. The result of her process was a nice blend of creativity and compatibility, and the colors she picked and the suggestions she made were perfect. Since then, I have recommended Tina to many of my friends and family. She has worked with several of them on a wide variety of projects, from updating some outdated decor on a budget to providing invaluable design input on extensive renovations. The personal tastes of the people involved have varied widely as well, from very traditional to very arty and eclectic. Regardless of the scope of the project or the style of the individual, in each case they have reported back how happy they were with the whole experience of working with Tina. Overall I think Tina has a talent to see what potential each space has, what it needs from color, to arrangement to accessorizing in order to achieve that potential, while still maintaining a keen awareness of how to customize these recommendations to match each individual. As other reviews have said, Tina does it all! The knowledge that Tina is nearby to help with my decorating decisions has really helped me keep my stress level down as I go into my next round of home upgrades!

To tell the truth, I hired Bayshore Home Staging and Redesign Co. after I contacted another co. and got slow to little response back to my questions and times available to schedule an appt. for a consultation. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
