Steve was great to work with, very professional and prompt. He did an excellent job building/installing a fence with a gate and a new screen door for us. I took his advice and everything came out better than I had hoped. I highly recommend his services and look forward to working with him again.

Due to the age of an old fence in my yard and a windy winter, I had 5 sections of fence down behind my pool in the back yard. I really needed to get a new fence in, as my pool was going to be opened on Wednesday (6/01/2016). I met Jon Merigan at my house, on short notice, Saturday (5/28/2016) afternoon for an estimate. He came and measured the job taking great notes of what exactly I needed to be done. I explained to him that I had already had other estimates and was not happy with them. Before leaving he gave me a handshake estimate and said that I would receive the detailed quotes no later than Tuesday (5/31/2016). I knew Jon was the right guy for the job instantly after meeting him. I asked what his time frame would be and he said at least 2 weeks out. I did tell him that my pool was to be opened on that Wednesday (6/01/2016 )and asked if there was anyway it may be done before that time. He said that he would try to make it happen the following weekend. As Jon said I had my 3 quotes for three different sections of fence on Tuesday evening and to my surprise the price for the job was less than the handshake estimate and he would squeeze the job in Friday (6/03/2016). I emailed him that night that it was a go for 2 of them at this time. Jon had me pay the supplier for the materials by credit card on Wednesday to secure the supplies and would then square up with him after for the labor when the job was done. Jon had his crew show up on Friday (6/03/2016) at around 7am. They started the tear down and preparation for the new fence while he was picking up the materials. I left for work around 8:30am and returned home at about 8pm that night. To my surprise they had just finished up both fences and his crew was on their way out after a long 13 hr. day. The job was done professionally and clean. The entire experience was top notch. I would recommend Merigan's Backyard Innovations to anyone in need of a fence. Jon and his crew delivered above and beyond my expectations. I cannot emphasize enough how important someones word is to me and he certainly delivered. Thanks again Jon. I will see you again for my next fence project.

I am a tenant in Worcester in a triple decker. I live on ground floor and have fenced in yard with a dog who loves that sort of thing. Call me spoiled but I got used to that. In the recent high-wind weather, a large 20' section of fence blew over. I discovered the posts were never cemented. Much to my dismay, the landlords did not want to fix the fence. In addition to having a dog I now had to leash walk everywhere, the yard was open to theft where I have a fire pit, grill, patio furniture, etc. I also feared the fallen fence would continue to get damaged and become impossible to salvage at all. I posted on thumbtack and received several replies. Some estimates were so high, they blew my mind. Then there was Billy. Billy wasted no time. He came right out to my apartment. He was empathetic to the fact that I was paying out of pocket on a property that wasn't mine and had a couple ideas on how to keep costs down. He recommended I buy the material. I bought it same day and two days later my fence was dug, poured, and set. The best part is he beat the snow coming and was extremely conscientious of his work. The old fence sections had rotted and worn down to the point where they had to be cut to be re-seated. Billy left full size posts for when those sections need to be replaced. When they are, they will match the height of the posts. I have already recommended Billy to a colleague who renovates and flips houses as a side business. I, myself, work for a General Contractor in Worcester but concrete and fence work was too much for me to tackle myself. I've been around the industry and I know good people when I see them. Billy is a hidden gem. I'd love to keep him the best kept secret I know but I'd be doing him and his work a dissatisfaction. I would recommend him to anyone. Without hesitation.

I’m so glad to have connected with Jay. He came to quote a fence repair project and I was delighted to find that his skill set extended way beyond fencing. I’ve now also hired him to rebuild deck stairs as well as replace a kitchen interior wall and exterior window sill, both damaged by ice dams. Jay’s pricing is extremely fair, work is thorough and his communication is timely. I highly recommend him for any jobs you have around your home!

We hired V & C to replace an old falling apart wooden fence. From start to finish it was a pleasure working with Joao and his crew. They arrived early each morning and worked hard throughout the day. It was not always an easy task and involved a lot of custom sizing along our driveway. The finished product was better than I thought possible. They also could not have cleaned up more thoroughly then they did. We will definitely be using V&C for other work!

I was extremely impressed with Junielson and his team. They replaced our backyard fence and installed a patio for us. Despite both projects being more difficult than expected (there was a surprising amount of large rocks and concrete buried in the yard), they pushed through without complaint and worked late to make up for lost time. They are hard workers, reasonably priced, and delivered quality work. I recommend them highly.

Leo and his crew installed a 4ft fence to baby-proof our pool and did a great job and delivered what was promised at a very reasonable price. The only drawback is that I wish they had done a better job cleaning the site after the project completion.

Kevin and his team did a great job in hellishly hot and humid weather. Fence repair looks great and this part of the fence now has the concrete footings it did not have before. Will definitely be using them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
