Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Can you tile over a tile backsplash?

Yes, you can tile over your existing kitchen backsplash if you want a fresh, new look. This will only work if the surface is smooth and there are no cracked or uneven backsplash tiles in the wall. If you have a few problem tiles, simply remove and reinstall them before you tile over the wall.

In general, it’s better to start with a blank wall. However, you may save time by simply tiling over your existing tile backsplash. When in doubt, always consult a tiling professional.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

What is the easiest backsplash to install?

Peel-and-stick tiles are the easiest backsplash to install, as they don’t require any materials or preparation work besides measuring.

Ceramic tile, a popular choice for many homeowners, is a fairly simple installation choice for backsplash, and it comes in almost any color and pattern.

Glass tile is a bit more difficult to install than ceramic, while stone or marble tile tends to be the most expensive.

Reviews for Greenville tile installers
Katherine P.
We hired this team to complete three full bathroom remodels. We were eager to get started and felt good based on our initial meeting. During the demo work, drywall was cracked on the side opposite of the demo and the flooring tape they used pulled up the stain of our newly refinished hardwoods. We have had to hire additional teams to help with this mess and were told that our tile flooring was not laid correctly with enough mortar which resulted in big uneven patches and gaps between the tile. Our bathroom is even photographed on their work (#29) and as you can see, the floors are so uneven you will stub your toe on the tile. Our shower head was scratched during install and isn't aligned with the tub spout- when questioned, they said it was because of a framing issue- but again, when we got our new company to look it over they said this wasn't true too. Our bathroom sink knobs were never accurately installed so they fall off and don't sit properly and they stripped the screw to one of our tub fixtures so you can't adjust the water settings without completely destroying the unit. Our tile upstairs creaked and shifts and when we consistently asked about it, we were told that was because of the floor. We have been told this was not accurate and was the result of an improper install. We will have to have the floors redone at our expense. The grout in our showers is falling out and is gone completely in some areas and in other areas where the grout should be white it has been mixed with pieces of debris now lodged in the grout. We also had a water leak with our upstairs bathroom toilet so we hired ACE plumbing (HIGHLY recommend) and they explained the toilet was not installed correctly which resulted in the water leak. I was eager to get this project started- but made a HUGE mistake and should have gone with a group that was more experienced even if it had a longer wait time. Now I will likely have to have much of this project redone at my expense and we have already spent a lot of money on plumbing to be redone. Really frustrated that this was an expensive project and ultimately wasn't done correctly. UPDATE: I was able to work with Jana and she refunded us for some of the work that we had to outsource with a plumber due to water issues.
