How do I even start? My father in law, who l with a 6 ft tall retaining wall, flagstone floor, and sitting wall on his Flat Rock property. It was a horrible experience. I had to micromanage them the whole way through and ended up with a subpar and overpriced patio, either way (according to 3 other contractors who gave me estimates to fix the mess they made of my yard). I was also told that it may start to sink in time bc they didn’t compact the rocks they filled it with and they didn’t even put in sand. It’s still very sloped and they said the spaces between the flagstone couldn’t be “even”. It’s more like a mosaic, which isn’t what we wanted. They ran out of materials several times, including concrete while putting down the slab. The floor is uneven, the concrete between the spaces is already cracking a month later, and the edges are jagged. They didn’t even grade the ground around the patio, causing, basically, a moat around it. They brought in a bobcat and left deep tracks from the wheels and covered them with leaves so it wasn’t visible (I later saw them do this in the videos and pics I took throughout the whole project). They also ran over a drain pipe and crushed it into the ground where it was draining downward and making a huge hole. When they “finished”, it rained for 2 weeks and I didn’t get a chance to see what they did. When the rain stopped, I cut the grass and blew the leaves away and saw the tracks. I called them back and they said they’d fix it along with cleaning up the mess of rocks and concrete that were left all over. They had thrown concrete into my landscaping (ivy), and they left concrete dust all over which the rain turned to a thin layer of concrete all over. They came back n cleaned up a little of it, and put some river sand in the track through the ivy (which was even worse of a mess. Still wasn’t even and you sunk into it when you walked on it) and left. They left a mess every day. I texted the owner and asked him when he was coming to finish and got no response. They, instead emailed my father in law n said they were done n the rain caused damage, not their equipment, and that I was making problems that were not there when they left, and they would be happy to come and give me an estimate to fix the damage. This is when I turned to Jeff. He came in with his son, Dillon, and graded the whole back area around the patio and through the ivy (with the correct materials), dug out the crushed pipe and replaced it to drain correctly. He put down soil to fill in the holes left by the wheels (using a track machine that glides, not sinks its wheels into the ground). He laid tiny rocks around the edge of the patio under the dirt to divert water away so it doesn’t get under the patio. He put river rocks under the drain pipe to divert water away. He went above and beyond and even fixed a couple of other small things that he didn’t even charge for. He cleaned up every day before leaving and even worked in the rain. I don’t know how to give this man enough praise. I will be hiring him again next week to put in grass, and in the near future to landscape the side yard, build a stone and flagstone path down the slope to the patio, fix my retaining wall in the front, help get my flower beds back in shape, and do the lighting in the back yard by the patio. I will hire him again and again to work on my property. He was also the cheapest of the 3 estimates I got. Thanks Jeff and Dillon. It looks great!!! You did an amazing job. If I could have given you more than 5 stars, I would have. Jesse

Paramount Greens has helped us with several projects over the years. They repaired and resodded much of our property after we made additions to the house, solved an ongoing drainage issue, installed a privacy fence, stone walkway, and have helped us keep it all looking nice by mulching and edging the beds. We don't hesitate to recommend Stephen and his team to our friends and neighbors, and will use them for our future landscaping projects.

Mr. Stone was very prompt in getting back to me to set up a time. He came out to look the job over and made me a quote. He was here when he said he would be and had the job done safely in one afternoon. Of all the people that quoted on this job (safety issue with 70ft. tress broken at ground level and leaning against another tree) he was the only one that showed me what he hoped to do and then he and his crew did it better than what they said they would do. There was minimal damage done to yard. Very Impressed and I would recommend Mr. Stone to anyone.

Ecoscapes did an excellent job redesigning my landscape. They tore out the old and implemented their design including installation of stone patio and walkway, planting trees, plants and mulching. They are very reliable, knowledgeable, hard working and very detail oriented. I have had numerous compliments on my landscape and even on the plants they used. I will definitely be using Ecoscapes in the future.

Nile and his team did a magnificent job installing my pavers and river stones. They went the extra mile by repairing items that were not part of the job, ie a cut in my irrigation system. I would highly recommend this company for any Landscaping job. Hats off to Cid and his teamates.

Everyone associated with Villa's Landscaping was professional, friendly and courteous.Their work is high quality and the price is reasonable. They arrived early in the morning and several days worked until dark. They did a large area with pavers and a walkway plus redid a stone wall. I am satisfied with all 3 jobs and have felt comfortable recommending them to other people. Friends have thanked me for the recommendation. I will use them in the future with confidence of getting a great result.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
