Wade and his crew moved a 3 bedroom house with large antiques, large paintings and a garage full of junk. He was responsive and professional. He and all of his crew were pleasant and smiled the entire way through an 8 hour move. There was not one dinged wall or harmed piece of furniture in any of it, and all of the boxes and possessions were treated gently. I have moved 5 times in the past 6 years, and without a doubt, Tri-State Movers has been the best and the fastest! I do not think you will be disappointed.

I originally hired CMV Worx to do some tile work for me, the owner, David was a really nice guy and did such a great job that I hired him to do crown molding throughout my house and also paint my living room and dining room. After talking to him he gave me a better price to mow my lawn than I was currently paying. I am very happy and thankful for the job CMV Worx did on my house and the landscaping he continues to do. Very professional and courteous company that I would recommend to anyone needing some work done to their house or just need their yard mowed.

Waterproofing garage, installing outside house lights, repair roof leak: Tony responded to my call quickly, gave a fair estimate and performed the work proficiently, removed all debris and, being a contractor was able to give me estimates on additional work I needed. I will use him on future projects.

From the time he came to my house to give me an estimate to the time the work was completed was just 26 hours. I couldn't be more happy! Isaac has a great attitude is very professional, reliable and personable. When Isaac left it was like a magic wand was waved and the work was done. I didn't even have to clean up. He repaired a damaged fence, installed a garage door opener and fixed a damaged dryer vent. Isaac is just the professional we where looking for to get work done at our house. I will continue to hire him for more work in the future and highly recommend him! Thanks Isaac!

This team did various work for me that ranged from building a retaining wall in my crawl space, building a three car garage and dock, and medium landscaping (involving leveling land in support of a garden). In all cases they came in on budget, responded to my questions, and the final product was great. Of note was their ability to listen to my thoughts for a specific project and suggest alternate methods which in some cases saved me money. Clean up at the end of each day (not at the end of each project) is the only area they could improve on but when brought the their attention, was quickly taken care of.

We recently had your team of handymen complete 2-jobs: install a new garage door opener, and install a new set of bi-fold closet doors. These hard working men completed these tasks on time, no extra charges, cleaned-up after them self, and also asked if there was anything else they could do for us. All this with a caring smile. Who could ask for any more. Thank you.

Nathan has roofed our home, put siding on our garage, built our daughter a beautiful deck, removed a fallen tree and repaired her chain link fence. He has been respectful, punctual, and always left our property clean and neat. His work is excellent and affordable. He has become a friend we feel we can call when ever we need a hand. We would highly recommend Nathan.

Wayne completely remodeled our kitchen and added a mud room/laundry room with a toilet, utliizing some of the excess space in our garage. We had a tight budget and Wayne was very honest and upfront about the costs of the project. As with any remodel project, some things took longer than expected, but Wayne handled the complications with ease and worked tirelessly until the project was complete. The difference between our old kitchen and the one Wayne gave us is amazing! The quality of Wayne's work is without question, but the two things that impressed me the most were his attention to detail and his concern for keeping our home as clean as possible in spite of the necessary mess that was created. I would highly recommend Wayne to anyone desires to have their project handled with integrity and professionalism.

John replaced two broken windows at a rental house. While the job was small, John treated it with utmost importance. He responded quickly and frequently, and I'll definitely use him again for other projects. I highly recommend John's company.

John and his crew completely insulated and sheetrocked a 2100 sq.ft. new construction garage building. Their price for the job was very reasonable. They began their work everyday between 6 - 8 am. They worked almost everyday until 4 -5 pm and at times even longer. Its difficult to find people in the construction field that work like that anymore. They were always pleasant and professional. Their quality of their work is outstanding. John has a desire to do things the right way and it shows in his work and attitude. The final result was that I probably have the best looking garage in the area. I have since given John more work and will give him first opportunity for anymore work I may have. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to have a new construction, remodel, or repair job done.

Mark and his crew painted the ENTIRE inside of my parents home (and the garage) that was being put on the market. Everything from trim, walls, ceilings, cabinets, inside closets, shoe racks....You name it and it was painted and made to look new again (in a 3800 sq. ft house)! I would highly recommend Mark to anyone for painting. I did not have to follow up and the project was completed in a timely manner. We hope to use him now for our own home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
