We needed an AC unit installed and others gave us the run around about the time they would come... After 2 days of the person not showing up on time, I found Jeff Beck on Thumbtack. He was first to give a reasonable quote, showed at the time he said he would be here to look at our system, and had given me details as to what work he would have to perform. He knows his ACs. He guaranteed the work for 1 year labor with the 10 year parts warranty from Goodman and included a referral bonus with the work ( ...I referred him to one more installation needed in my family because he gave a great offer and was professional ) . Top it off, Jeff showed up early for the installation of the HVAC by 1 hour on the date of install. He gave me notice about his arrival time, of course. He's a great communicator and does outstanding work. Cons of reading reviews: Many of the reviews on Goodman online were not good but found out for myself that the system is good and it's not noisy. Jeff installed the system well and it is about the installer!!! We are resting peacefully here.

This man does it all! We originally inquired about a backsplash needing to be done. When Andrew arrived he asked us of we were pleased with all the medley of work and worker who had come in and done previous work on our whole-home renovation. We promptly explained the horror stories that had come before him; People stealing money and walking off the job, smoking in our home with a newborn here, leaving the gate open and letting our dog loose, doing such a bad job on crown that it all needed to re-done, etc? Andrew worked with us and fairly priced out all of the additional work we needed done. He has done an entry way tile from scratch, re-worked electric placements and wiring, fixed trim and crown and made it look it was never half done, created floating shelves, created a kitchen island, made a backsplash that makes our kitchen looks like something out of a Belle Meade mansion... And all the while, he has been respectful of our newborn baby with noise and debris. He has never once been late. He communicated every time before he arrived just to touch base and let us know he was on his way. Andrew feels as much like family as he does a skilled craftsman. His work is the best I've seen and we fully plan to let him finish off the remaining projects on this home. Andrew is the way to go.

Mr. Watson showed up when he said he would. He worked around all the rain that made it hard to complete the painting project, but they stuck with it. His price was very fair and now my house looks better than all the houses in my neighborhood. He had several people stop and ask for quotes on their homes and I am sure he will have more jobs in the future because of the great work he did on my home.

I had a broken door and everybody suggested to install a new door which cost a lot of money for new door plus labor but Morgan Cryar fixed it and made it looks like new for very affordable price. I really appreciate his great job.

Jonathan came in to build a fence and tear down/expand our deck. The quote he gave us was outstanding. We did add in a few items, such as staining the deck and then, after the first day, adding in a drainage system. There were a few hiccups in the project, such as the stain acting more like paint. Jonathan had to sand down all the boards, get new stain (a different brand) and restain everything! We also had a week of rain, two days lost due to drilling into limestone, etc. He addressed every single concern we had. We needed a gate at the top of our deck stairs due to us having a 15 month old son. He showed me how the handles of the fence gates lock, because my son figured out how to open them within an hour of being outside! The deck has been planed down and is so smooth that you can walk out there without shoes, not worrying about any splinters! Jonathan really customized everything to make sure that not only we were happy, but our son was safe. I was also very impressed how he and his workers looked after our son, would talk with him, and not be put off when he was walking around, showing interest (not that he was out there a lot!). They explained to him what the tools did, and Jonathan even showed him how to dig in our gravel with a trowel. The hardest part was the length of the project. I've been told that when you have construction projects, to expect them to take twice as long and cost twice as much. We did have to shell out just a little more. Part of it was our fault due to the drainage we asked them to add under the deck. The other part was the two days of labor lost thanks to the limestone. Jonathan had to come in with rebar and resupport everything. The project did end up taking twice as long, due to a lot of the unforeseen circumstances. And I'm not counting the week of rain where very little was able to be done at all! Overall, I would highly recommend Jonathan to anyone needing work done. We could not have asked for a better job to be done! And we would definitely consider using him again with our next home improvement project!

In an age of hiring crews of cheap labor, where "good enough" is just that, it's refreshing to find someone who is a true craftsman. Paul is what others here have stated, hard working, skilled and lightning fast. He is also someone who can not only hang the store bought cabinets but can build the cabinets from scratch. I am well pleased with the work he has done and highly recommend his services.

Ben was great to work with. He was efficient, great at coming up with solutions. Definitely recommend him! Very professional, super experienced, and very knowledgeable! Make sure when getting other quotes that you are seeing the cost for the entire job-- not just labor! Ben will quote you a bundle price that includes labor, outlets, wires, etc. everything you'll need for a finished product. Not everyone may be doing that--- He's a pro! Worth every penny.

I hired Ethan with Indigo painting to do interior painting on our 2500 sq. ft. house. I chose quite a few bold colors that, had the job not been done right, would have looked terrible. Ethan worked his butt off from early morning to late at night, to get the house finished before our move-in date. Even though it only took him 2.5 days (!!) to finish the job, it looks gorgeous. He's a true professional. He picked up the paint for me so I didn't have to, as well. For all this (3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining room, sitting room, upstairs and downstairs hallways, as well as a stairwell with very high ceilings) he only charged $1600.00 in labor. He saved us a TON of work and time, not to mention stress. Don't hesitate to hire this guy, he's amazing!

We started primarily as a moving provider. After many inquiries of other tasks by customers following their move, we decided to open up our services a bit. Our prices are very competitive in all cases and often just downright low in comparison. We are a very small operation with at most four people, so we are able to provide the same services for less! In most cases, we charge the following: - $60 per person for 3 hr of labor ($20/hr for 1-3 hr) - $15/hr every following hr Hauling may differ. With our vast amount of experience in several areas, a list of what we offer would be long and boring, so we consider ourselves primarily a labor services. If it takes a little know-how mixed with sweat to do it, chances are we can! We are also honest people and will be honest on our capabilities. Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to working for you! Mountain Movers

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
