Jan catered a small brunch (16 people) for my mother's 80th birthday and it was perfect. I had coordinated a simple but elegant menu with Jill Brother's of MacK and Kates. The food was delicious. They arrived on time, set up and served beautifully and the very best part was that my kitchen appeared as if nothing had happened when they left. It was effortless and everyone raved about the food.

Shannon, owner of Our Table Catering, provided a "drop-off" catering for our business lunch function. I am very proud to say, that along with my team and executive guests, I was very impressed with the service provided and the food served at the function. The caterer provided all utensils, plates, plastic ware, etc. needed for the event. With regard to the food, the entrees, sides, and variety desserts were all amazing. People couldn't stop raving about the taste and quantity of what was served. From the salad, to the Savory Chicken with Mushrooms, and all the way to the Assorted Dessert Tray, I and the rest of the team were truly impressed with the experience. My company will certainly do business with Our Table Catering again. Whoever is reading this, I encourage you to give them a try and experience the food and service first hand.

Kristen came to our VRBO house to prepare us an amazing dinner for my sister-in-law's bachelorette party. From the moment I first reached out to her she was extremely responsive and flexible. She worked with us to create the perfect menu for our group (including meat lovers, vegetarians, and expectant mamas). She showed up right on time and got to work! She prepared plenty of food for our group, and it was delicious. She talked us through each dish, and was very patient with our chatty group! It was clear that everything she prepared was well thought out. Do not miss her mac and cheese, it is to.die.for! Then came dessert(s), one chocolate-y and one lighter and fruity. They were the perfect ending to a perfect meal. We loved it all! Thank you Kristen!!

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to our wedding meal Brandy. You and your team offered wonderful options for each course and everyone at the wedding loved the food. One of the comments we hear consistently about our wedding is how great the food was and we could not agree more. Brandy was fabulous to work with and she promptly responded to any questions I had as we were finalizing details. Also, Brandy put together a "picnic basket" with our wedding food for my husband and I to enjoy after our wedding and it was wonderful :) Finally, the bartenders and wait staff that were at our wedding were both personable and professional. We absolutely recommend Brandy and Beyond Details!! -Allie and Coby From the Mother of the Bride... I met with Brandy several months before our daughter's wedding for a second tasting, the first one was with our daughter and fiancé only. I was absolutely blown away by the tasty offerings. My husband could not attend the tasting but said his only condition in choosing a caterer was that the food must be of high quality and absolutely outstanding. Brandy offered both. We instantly decided to go with Brandy that evening and never regretted it. She and her team are top notch and they offered everything we expected and more. The food was presented beautifully and the temperature was perfect. Our guests were awe of our menu selection. Everyone was impressed! We loved working with Brandy and we highly recommend her. -Ginny

I contacted Chef Casandra with a catering idea for a unique birthday party... an afternoon High Tea! She got right to work researching the traditional menus and history of High Teas. She was quick to respond with suggestions and took my initial concept to a whole new level! Chef Casandra took care of everything from the serving trays to rentals to the food (of course) and even hand-selected the assortment of tea offerings. Her creativity and professionalism are superb... not to mention, the food! Everything was so delicious! My guests left impressed, delighted and -- most importantly -- full! I will absolutely work with Chef Casandra again and will be quick to recommend her to anyone seeking an amazing catering chef. Thank you, Chef Casandra, for making my birthday one to remember!!

B and G Hospitality catered a dinner for our large group of friends. The food was delicious, plentiful, and beautifully displayed. The risotto they served was the creamiest I have ever had, and the roast beef was cooked to perfection. I would definitely recommend them!

Gail has catered for me twice in the past year. She made box lunches for a Womens canoe trip, yummy sandwiches, hummus with veggies, a huge cookie all in a darling bag decorated for autumn. Recently she catered box lunches again, this time for 10 bridesmaids, mothers and the bride while the party dressed, took pictures and gathered in the bridesroom before the wedding. The lunch was amazing and Gail's creative flair adds a specialized touch ,which is unique to her business. Gail's catering, really ends up being a "a beautiful wrapped gift" to those she serves.

The customer service was flawless! Once I explained the importance of my family event; I knew by the responses I received they would be perfect then, and now, for future events. I had an event for up to 25 people with a variety of foods to include ham, miniature BBQ hot dogs, meatballs, honey hot wings, and other dishes. When the food arrived it was still warm and well prepared. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for excellent customer service and a gifted craft in the kitchen; and they support us military veterans! Thank you REEDICULOUSLY GOOD CHICKEN and I'll be looking forward to spreading the word and using your services again!

I had the pleasure of working with Chef Sean for an appreciation dinner I hosted for a few special friends. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Chef Sean was more than prepared with his own cookware, utensils, seasonings, and all the extras that added a special touch. He came early to my home to prep and came back later to complete the meal. Everything was fresh and right on time. I would not change a thing. He is the expert and made all things seem simple. It was a small, intimate event, however Sean gave me the same treatment as if I was a big time client. I would recommend Chef Sean for any style event. He is sure to please!

I sought to give my husband a personal and unique catering experience for father’s day in our home and reached out to Vee-Go and asked if they could deliver on my desire. They developed a menu for the occasion, mapped out the evening, and far exceeded my expectations having never requested an in home caterer before! The food was exceptional and the private chef experience was luxurious! I’ve literally recommended to all my friends vegan or not because the food is that good and experience that sexy for a date night in! My husband even shared their information with our job and they are catering the office’s next meatless Monday! We plan to use them for a family dinner party real soon

The entire experience with Joyful Provisions was wonderful. Our occasion was a"sisters' reunion". We set a menu that we wanted to learn how to make. They involved us in every step of the meal adding interesting cooking tips. Food was excellent; staff were very personable and the kitchen was clean when they finished. GREAT!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
