Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Setting up a safe consultation or appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic starts with comparing local professionals online. Message or call the handyman to ask about performing a consultation over the phone or, better yet, a video call. This will allow the handyman to assess the problem without increasing the risk of transmission by visiting your home. If the service is essential and the handyman needs to enter your home, you’ll need to take stringent safety measures for the visit. Discuss temporary fixes if possible, and come up with a plan for safety and digital payment.

How can I find out if a handyman is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Depending on the service needed, a handyman may be considered essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can check by visiting your city or state’s government website. In addition, CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage offers national guidelines for determining essential services. Their page delineates 16 essential infrastructure sectors that can continue to operate during the pandemic. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a handyman when social distancing?

If you hire a handyman, stay 6 feet away from the handyman at all times. If you have an indoor emergency and it’s considered an essential service, take extra social distancing precautions with your handyman. Do not make physical contact, stay at least 6 feet from the handyman, and exchange payment through digital services instead of cash or check. Talk with your handyman and agree on a plan in advance.

Can I use digital payments to pay for handyman services?

Many handymen accept digital payments for work done repairing homes. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need for social distancing, this trend is likely going to increase. Handymen often accept payment through popular platforms like Paypal, Google Pay, Zelle, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Consult with the handyman before you begin work to ensure you’ll be able to conduct the transaction safely and in compliance with official guidelines.

Does a handyman need to enter my home?

In many cases, a handyman will not need to enter your home for outdoor repairs, but they’ll likely need to enter your home for indoor repairs. With the pandemic’s associated safety guidelines, it’s important that this only occurs for absolutely essential projects. Avoid any physical contact with the handyman if this is the case. Sanitize surfaces, and conduct payment through a digital platform like PayPal or Venmo. Be sure to contact your handyman and develop a plan before the job commences.

Is it worth it to hire a handyman?

It’s worth it to hire a handyman in many cases. For example, you should hire a handyman when the project’s size and scope make it challenging to complete by yourself. These projects may include major home remodels or additions, foundation work or electrical/plumbing/HVAC-related tasks. However, make sure the handyman has the proper credentials or license to perform the necessary work.

You might also want to hire a handyman if a contractor’s price is too high. Handymen often charge less than general contractors, but contractors typically have the required license to perform certain tasks.

And, lastly, think about the complexity of the job and the cost of future repairs. It’s worth it to hire a handyman when the project is complex. Doing something incorrectly can wind up costing more than hiring the pro in the first place.

Do handymen offer remote or virtual services?

Because a handyman needs to be physically present to perform work, they have not traditionally offered remote or virtual services. However, if you come across handyman profiles that state they offer remote services, message the handymen to see what those services include.

Confer with your handyman to see if consulting over video calls is possible. The professional may be able to walk you through performing basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other types of repairs around the house. Compare the handymen in your area side-by-side online, and ask whether they’re willing to help remotely.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Matt is a very efficient and competent handyman. He has a wide skill range and is affordably priced. He also came through for me when I needed work done the same day my parents were moving into my house. Some items he did for me included assembling mini chandeliers, hanging picture frames/mirrors, installing door handles, and replacing light switch and outlet cover plates. I recommend him for your handyman needs and will definitely be using him again in the future.

The actual service of the handyman was excellent but the cost for the job was way overpriced. My initial review was a 1 star rating based solely on the way the actual price per job was hidden and not the service of the handyman. The job I had done took approximately 20 minutes but I was charged $98 even though it says $49/hour. After I posted my review Xigman did refund me half of my money back so this is why I am updating my star rating. Also, I was told the handyman couldn't get additional work with a 1 star rating even though I said his service was excellent. When I questioned Xigman I was told to read note 15 of the policy that says they charge a 2 hour minimum. Why is the two hour minimum posted 15 items down into the policy? If I would have seen that they charge a two hour minimum next to the $49 I would have NEVER used them for this job. I was also told that the handyman had to drive from Irving. Well last time I checked it doesn’t take $49 to drive from Irving! I asked for services in the Allen area so I don’t feel like I should be charged for a driving fee. Overall, I have used Thumbtack multiple times and have never had this issue. I will never use XIgman again!

Mr. Lindsey made room for my small little project after working a full day on another large project. I told him I wanted it done by a certain day (which was a tight deadline) and he made it work. I will be calling him for all of my "handyman projects" in the future!

We hired Moe's Handyman Services to install a ceiling fan I purchased. Moe and Hugo came out the next morning to put it up. I misplaced the directions for the fan, but they didn't mind. They were very professional and courteous, and the work was done in a timely matter. Took time to explain in detail how it worked. Highly recommend!

We are so pleased with JT’s work! First handyman we’ve hired that we didn’t have any quality issues with. He took my direction and got right to work. He hung bistro lights and a wire trellis and they look so great! Very professional, quality work. Just as I pictured. Will definitely hire again!

I had to call Rob after my original handyman had an unfortunate accident and had to cancel the appt. Rob was able to come same day and only 3 hours later than my appt with the other guy. Rob was very nice and professional. He got the job done quick and price was on point! We will be using Rob again for other house projects for sure!

I provided My Honey Do’s Handyman with a list of items that came up in the home inspection of a house I just purchased. They showed up on time with all the equipment they needed. Very friendly, good hardworkers. They seemed extremely knowledgeable in everything they did and got it done in a timely matter. They even tackled some last minute things we needed. I will absolutely be using them again in the future.

I admire people who can respond to their customers in time even at midnight. Joel is that type of handyman. He is not just handy with his repair work but his handy way to communicate. There had been no guess of the price. Simply great! I am not interested in the on-call service that someone comes to your door to estimate and then offer you a price that you won’t afford, but you will still have to pay for the assessment. Overall, great job and great person!

I called JWR Home Services for installing the garage overhead saferack. Jason was very punctual and provide the update on-time during arrival. He provide estimation before screwing the walls. Eventually the saferack I bought was not suitable for my ceiling. so I had to return the things but he provided the additional information to buy the suitable safe racks. He helped me to pack the stuff back to the original boxing which I did not see with anyone. He is so helpful and I strongly recommend this company to hire for any handyman work.

I had a huge list of detailed items I needed done at my house and Jose did them all so well. One particular issue I had been dealing with for 11 years since I moved into the house was that many electrical outlets were not working (bathrooms, back porch, garage, etc.). Jose spent time figuring out the source of the issue and fixed it quickly. He really went above and beyond to make the effort to find out what was going on. He also helped install new door handles, switch plates, outlet covers, door chimes, and lighting fixtures around the house which made everything look and feel more updated. He also took on a tile project in my entryway where a previous handyman had done a somewhat sloppy job with some grout and cleaning up. Jose took his time and regrouted the trouble areas and scraped and cleaned each little mess-up on every tile. For all his hard work, my family and I are so appreciative. Do not hesitate to hire Jose, he will make sure you are all set and ready to go.

Below is my original review, but these guys left a reply back with bunch of lies and I cannot reply back to it via another review so I am editing this review to update with few receipts to bust their lies. I wish I had their texts too to show the 7am commitment. Really pathetic to hear their bunch of lies. They said I did not purchase the items they mentioned before hand and to prove their lies I am attaching home depot receipts that I went to purchase stuff before hand (time stamp tell you that no handyman goes at 8.53pm to buy stuff). I even got 2 different length of wires not knowing what works hence my return receipt is also attached. Also, the prove that they forgot to tell me about wirenuts (read below) and that I had to go while the handyman came to work, see receipt for that too and my confusion as to what to get so got few different choices and ended up returning some later. It is one thing to make mistakes (we all do) but it is not acceptable for being in a customer service business and you lie about it and try to cover it up and blame the other person, that to me is un-excusable. Please take your business elsewhere. Experience was pathetic, wish I can give -5 stars. Day 1: The person/ owner I spoke on phone mentioned the work would be done easily (have to add 2 new electrical outlets higher up in the wall), and asked me to go get some supplies (new outlets and wiring) and I did. Day 2: The person who came to do the work said 1. I am missing Wire nuts which I was not told to buy, and he said he can go get it costing me 1hr of time or I could go get it and it took 30mins of my time and I had to pay him for that time 2. he said cant add new outlets but have to relocate instead, and asked me to go buy just some sheet rock so he can fix the holes left by the older outlet tomorrow (2hrs of time taken already). As he already has some orange peel spray ready and such, he said he will just take 30mins tomorrow. This guy all the 2 hrs was in and out of house, on phone and very causally working and keeps locking himself out of the house (door auto-locks, so I asked him to crank it open if he has to go out) and waits for me to unlock the door some 5 times. AND, he made a hole at the wrong spot and mentioned casually that he can cover it up when he comes to fix the wall anyways. he said he will speak to the owner and will come by 8am sharp and I dont have to call to schedule. Day 3 and Day 4: After 8am, I make multiple phone calls and texts to the owner asking to send him or someone to fix the 3 holes in the wall, as we leave on vacation soon for 10 days. After may be some 6 or so calls, he calls back saying he will send someone that evening. And then I told him to send the same guy who worked as he said he had orange peel spray and asked me to just get sheet rock, then he says the guy he assigned is different and cannot do texture so will reassign someone for tomorrow. Day 5: Guy supposed to come between 7-8am, shows up at 11am. And asks who did the work as it is completely wrong (socket sticking out) and the outlet is crooked. He apologized for the work of their own team member, and tries to fix the crookedness. Fixes the hole and said he will come TOMORROW to sand and paint and fix the outlet alignment. I paid for 1 more hour. Day 6: I already decided I will not call these guys back anyways, but no one from their end bothered to come back and fix the mess or to ask if I needed them to complete the job. waste of 3 hrs of my money and time.
